  • May 2012 we catch Santa Fe steam locomotive #3751 leading the Grand Canyon Limited on BNSF's Needles Sub. We catch scenes on both the Eastbound run on May 14th and the Westbound run on May 19th.

Great video, would've been a better excursion if the Arizona and Califironia didn't have slow orders on all their bridges!

What in the hell they put 2 diesel locomotive behind the steam engine?

They put diesels because it, A. most likely wouldn't be able to climb cajon pass on its own, B. In case something did happen to the steam engine the diesels can help and tow the train, and C. To provide electricity to rail cars.

Would have been an even better video if 3751 was actually pulling the train. To bad she was clearly being shoved by the diesels behind her. They're working hard as evidenced by the smoke from their stacks, unlike the steam engine who SHOULD be pushing visible exhaust of some kind out her stack. Plus she's not making any noise, while the diesels can clearly be heard. (I know all about a good competent crew running a clean stack. That is NOT what's happening here. 3751 is virtually silent while the infernal combustion engines can be seen and heard to be working quite clearly )

She was pulling the train! The two diesels behind her were there to provide help when needed and electricity to the passenger cars. Get your facts straight before you start ranting off in ten comments!

if you had your volume on you'd hear 3751's exhaust
diesels are there for safety, braking, and in some cases electricity. reminder that you do not have spare parts for 3751
climate can also change how exhaust looks, infact a good running locomotive would barely have any smoke at all. however, it does depend on the locomotive, this one burns oil
