The kalalau trail is one of the most dangerous hikes in the world on Kauai's north shore, along with one of the most dangerous beaches in the world... Hanakapiai beach is a recipe for disaster for anybody, especially for tourists that don't understand its terrain and unpredictable winds etc. Tourists need to also understand that during the winter times, the north shore brings along extremely dangerous and life-threatening swells and riptides (especially that beach) I typically don't comment extensively on youtube posts in general, but I've been hearing more and more people going missing (mainly tourists) mainly due to lack of knowledge of Hawaii's oceans and weather during the winter season. I do pray that this person is found, but for anybody reading this, please be extremely cautious and ALWAYS ask for local advice when at all possible. I've been living on Maui for the past 6 yrs now, and I still ask for local advice when applicable.
Yep. You’re right. And the reason we are seeing so many more incidents is the volume of hikers including day hikers going in there has grown exponentially over the last 5-7 years. Have to be safe
Not just winter. Years ago a bunch of my friends and I were paddling our surfboards from Haena to Polihale with the intention of overnighting in Honopu. There was no swell whatsoever. We got to the point just before Kalalau and there was an incredible current that we couldn’t enter every time we tried it would kick us out. We tried right next to the shoreline as well as paddling out probably more than a mile with the same results. We ended up paddling back to Hanakapiai and spending the night there. If someone got caught in that current who’s to say how far out they would have been carried. We used to play at Kee beach at the end of the road in the current. We’d jump in the current along the shoreline and have it carry us out to the opening out to sea and climb up on the rocks just before it carried us out.
They “never” listen. Then they want to sue. The problem is “no respect for the islands.” I know this first hand with air bnb guests. Try to save them but the response is always sassy and know it all defensive.
Kauai beaches are beautifully deceptive, especially Na Pali where swimming a couple-dozen feet and you are basically in the open-ocean. I'm guessing they will find her on Ni'ihau. RIP
I am wondering if she had her phone in a waterproof pack, and was able to communicate, but rescuers weren’t able to reach her due to tides and currents? I am also very confused.

Well said. This is a least the 5th one this winter!!! Oddly, the state doesn't keep statistics.

I know, too many visitors don't respect Da `Aina. Sad. 😢
