Hi Scout, apologies for no note in the package And causing all the confusion I thought I had put one in, for this tool I think the black was the perfect colour, AWSOME restoration, keep them coming, Monday Wednesday and Fridays are the highlights of my week and. probably for most of you subscribers.
Great restoration. I have recently purchased a set of ornate saw set pliers, identical to the CK set, manufactured by Ahrems, a German manufacturer of tools, based in Wuppertal, Germany. They manufactured a range of tools, including wood planes, pliers, wrenches and knives, was distributing tools, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. A very interesting history of this family owned company started by Ewald Ahrem's (1870 - 1953) I have an antique wooden wood plane and the pliers that I am in the process of cleaning up. Ewalds son, William Ewald Ahrem (1902 - 1967), became a partner to the company in 1930 and continued running the company until his death in 1967. Your restoration technique will help with the clean up of my Ahrem's saw set. Thank you for sharing.
I think I came across one of those tools when I first went to the flea market/car boot sale looking for old tools. Mrs Rathbone found it but I didn't know what it was for and I can't remember how much was being asked for it. You gotta love a good outtake 👍😁
Congratulations John on 20K. You're so right about the quality of older tools and the over-the-top embellishments. Here in the UK we still have many of the old steam tools, many restored beautifully and on show & working. Beam engines with columns of cast iron decorated with capitals copied from Roman stone architecture. There was romance in the iron, once upon a time...
Keith- Sometimes I look at old Victorian homes and think how they didn’t skimp on anything, then I look around at what they make today and think they skimp on everything!! 😂👍
@@ScoutCrafter As a restorer the irony won't be lost on you, that old stuff restores well because of how it was designed and built but modern stuff...if it breaks it sadly can only be thrown away - a repair is often a rebuild almost from scratch and not worth the cost or effort.
Congratulations John 20,000 very happy people are amazing and you are amazing thank you for all your videos they keep us so entertained in this time of trouble
The 20k is well deserved. You have made tool restoration popular by some of your exquisite work (like the saw set). Yourself, Old Sneelock, 357 Magdad, Joe's Shop have brought joy and knowledge to so very many of us for which we are so grateful.
Congratulations on the 20K! That saw set came out so beautiful. I miss the era of beautiful tools and everyday objects. The house I grew up in had the old fashioned crystal door knobs and had skeleton keys and the key hole and door knob plate had a similar intricacy to the brass. It was an every day item, and the embellishments were not necessary. But it added a touch of pizazz that still makes me pause whenever I see it to this day, which is very rare now.
Congratulations on 20k subscribers. In watch your channel growing every week. I know it will keep growing because all of your content is great. I have learned a lot from watching your videos. Thank you for making something on TH-cam worth watching.
Beautiful work and presentation! Thank you for sharing this. For my own taste I would have left the casting marks on there. I love the organic feel and character they bring to the tool. Like a fingerprint. Polished does not speak to me in the same way. For this particular tool. For a pair of scissors I would prefer a completely even surface. The ink on those embellishments is a wonderful touch! I wish we made more tools like this, and the same with buildings. Look at old brickwork and the details we would have and tell me how it compares to concrete. From my father's toolbox I have some of the files used to sharpen a saw but not the setting tool itself. I won't need it either. I use those files for other things now. :-) Much love from Denmark.
Ha ha that was a really great goof up came up fantastic Very nice tool they just don’t make them like that anymore You need to do a video with all the outtakes congratulations On 20 thousand subscribers it couldn’t have happened to A greater human being we all love you Scout god bless take care 🗽🇳🇿👏👍🙏🇺🇸🎉
Congratulations again on the 20K. I found your channel at a bad time when I was diagnosed with a no cure cancer. I needed a hobby because I can't work and I found you. It's been great. You gave me something to do with my son. Just thought you needed to know how much you do for us out here. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks
Hello Glen- I am so glad you found this particular hobby- As you know when you are working on a tool and the dust is flying there is a connection between you and the tool that takes our mind off all the obstacles of the day. Sometimes the only way I can give my mind peace is to get into the shop. God bless you my friend! 😃👍
Right On John! 👍🏼 Congratulations on 20k!! 🏆That is awesome and you have an awesome channel! Such an amazing variety of tips, tricks, old tools and fun memories of old stuff I haven’t thought of in years! Like those tether cars! Thanks for all that you share.
First Congrats on your 20K subs, don't know why you are not at a million. Next, I have sawset envy! You did an amazing resto-mod on it, thanks for keeping it subtle in black. You are the best at what you do. Thanks.
John, you are wonderful to watch! I'm gonna throw this out there but maybe the key to 1 million subscribers might be to show off a little bit of leg! Keep it up brother!
I have always enjoyed cleaning up tools but due to your videos I am now able to bring them to an all new level. You also inspired many of us to make videos, I just hit 500 subs. Thanks for the knowledge and keep up the great content congrats on 20K Subs! Seems like yesterday you were at 5K!
Tom- We all push each other to do better work and the tool restoration community is such a great group of people! Hopefully you can meet up with us at the next LI Tool meeting at the Frank Brush Barn after this Covid nonsense goes away... 😃👍
The vinegar will eat into that cast but I have had the worst trouble with springs! It will eat up spring steel so quickly. I had a buddy go to a tool show over a weekend and accidentally left a red devil puddy knife in there and the only thing left was the wood handles and the rivets hahah I was going to mention it last video but I knew you would be watching it. Great job!!
Beautifully done. I really appreciate you teaching about the kerf(?) and showing how the tool is used. I absolutely love that little plastic pointing hand! Keep them coming! Congrats on hitting 20K subscribers.
CONGRATS john on 20K! You certainly deserve it. I tell all my fiends how great this channel is and am sure many of us in the Scoutcrafter family do as well. You have changed a lot of lives for the better! BTW - absolutely beautiful saw set now - makes me want to learn how to engrave tools!
Thank you very much for solving my problem of not knowing what this tool was for. the red paint is probably not original. And to think that I used to sell tools? Never too old to learn, greetings from Holland Frans
That is a gem. Congratulation on amassing 20k of the best subscribers, we have a lot of common subscribers and i know that they are all great folks. I can't wait to see what you do when you reach 100k. Cheers
Congratulations on 20,000. You wouldn't be there if you weren't providing useful education to alot of people. I've learned alot from your site, and it's all been very enjoyable. I agree with your comment on the elaborate embellishment of these old tools. The manufacturer was proud of his product and he wanted people to notice. I once saw an old steam engine in a museum with supporting beams made of cast iron to look Greek columns. Same "I'm proud" idea. This was an early 19th century engine. Again, congratulations and best wishes for many more subscribers and cool videos.
Congrats on the 20k! That saw set is fantastic! Sort of reminds me of an old gun. I think you took some new subs who were searching for a different kind of King Dick! Great work as always!
Good graphic demonstration on kerf width and saw sets. 😀 Not a big deal but the tool more than likely is only forged instead of cast. They have similar marks but casting steel to get the knurling and the floral designs is tough. Do you remove the springs and screws before immersing in vinegar? I learned the hard way that screws shrink and springs crack if they are in vinegar, muratic acid, even the Evaporust will destroy springs and screws if they are immersed overnight. 😀
This year my gradfather showed a similar tool, but with GF on the rounded logo. By looking aroung the Internet, this could me a german brand called Garanto und Fein. This saw set was inherited by his father and have the same details on the handle and at the end. What a nice piece of tool!
“Superbly beautiful” is an understatement my friend. You did a perfect restoration on this lovely old tool. I can’t wait to see what you do with the next ones. Take care. 😃👍🏼
Congrats on the 20k Scout 🙂👍. We've came a long way and still going. Welcome to all the new people 🙂. This restoration turned out really great. Looks like it just came out of the box

Hi Lance- Once again I am so sorry about the mix up. Thanks again so much for those beautiful tools! 😃👍
Cool saw set.

The black paint to fill is like the old nielloing process. Looks excellent, so tasteful and dynamic to the embellished accents.
Thanks!!!!!!!!
Scout, thanks for the videos. I’m proud to be one of the 20,000. Congratulations.
Thanks John!!! 😃👍
Gorgeous. I got a Saw Set at the giant yard sales Peaches to the Beaches last year. Happy with it, but this one is a beaut.

Hi Scout. ......congrats on 20K! Saw set is beautiful. Thanks for sharing and have a happy day!
Congratulations John 20,000 very happy people are amazing and you are amazing thank you for all your videos they keep us so entertained in this time of trouble
That saw set came out wonderful. I like that you kept the embellishments black, I think it adds style to the tool!
What a great looking saw set, as you say, shame you can't buy ornate tools like.that anymore. Congrats on the 20k 👍👍👍🎉🎊🎉
Well deserved accomplishment! Thanks for being an island of sanity during times like these..
