  • Regular interest income is reported to U.S. taxpayers on an IRS Form 1099-INT. Taxable interest is generally subject to your ordinary federal income taxes and is reported on Schedule B of Form 1040.
If a taxpayer has interest income from U.S. obligations reported in Box 3 of Form 1099-INT, that interest income is also subject to federal income taxes. However, the Box 3 interest income is generally exempt from state income taxes.
In this example, the taxpayer has both Box 1 and Box 3 interest income. The taxpayer is a resident of Georgia filing a GA Form 500, and he must adjust his GA state taxable income to exclude the interest income from U.S. obligations.
