    It’s really nice throughout all the things we here about the supremes , one thing is for certain Cindy has always been such a sweet woman even after she went through her traumatic kidnapping in the 60’s she still continued to be a joy to be around and I’ve never heard anything negative about her she genuinely was a breath of fresh air when the group needed it modt

    nobody was ever going to fill florences shoes, but cindy was a damn good choice of replacement. she arrived at the time when it became the diana ross show, and never got the chance to show what she was capable of until after diana had left. i felt for cindy as there is an interview on here where diana says cindy was never a real supreme. its also true that cindys motown contract was for that as a backing singer, much like the andantes.

      It sucks when you learn that Cindy felt she didn't have a good voice and didn't wanna take lead vocals as a result of that insecurity. Yet she has such an amazing impact on the 70s Supremes.

    I don't think the 70 Supremes got any credit at all because they were getting down with Stevie Wonder and I know they definitely were getting down with Smokey Robinson I wish Stevie would have been able to get his hands on them to produce something and I wish Cindy would not have left but I love susaye Linda and Scherrie as well

      Jermaine, Stevie did produce the funky, probably too ahead of its time for 1972 “Bad Weather” and was working on a full album for The Supremes but the project was abandoned due to Motown’s failure to properly promote “Bad Weather”. There are demo versions on SoundCloud of two additional Stevie Wonder productions- “Soft Days” and “I’ll Wait a Lifetime”.

      What if the reviews for any solo showings they may have done at the time poor? And it wasn't Diana Ross's calling?
      I'm talking about rehearsals and such where people gave Berry Gordy feedback on Mary and Cindy...

    • @Tes7000
      @Tes7000 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In an alternate universe, Diana Ross left the Supremes in 1967 instead of Florence. I read that was the original plan until the situation with Florence hit the skids. Starting in 1966 or so, Diana was pushed so far out front, because Gordy was planning to take her solo. I don't think it was ever intended that she would stay in the group until 1970, but circumstances kind of kept her there.
      I said all of this to say that the situation with Diana wasn't supposed to continue indefinitely. I think the plan was for Mary and Florence, and later Mary and Cindy, to be pushed down for the sake of Diana just long enough to get her launched as a solo artist. Mary tried to get Florence to understand that.
      Since Florence and Diana couldn't leave the group at the same time, Diana had to stay, despite the fact that she really had probably already come to see herself as a solo artist a year or two before her official exit.

    It's funny how all the comments talk about how Cindy exudes joy, class and elegance. I agree about class and elegance, but her smile always seemed a little sad to me for some reason. The biggest smile I ever seen her give was at the end of the Fats Waller medley on Ed Sullivan. That's one of my favorite Supremes TV performances.
    Edit: I see people usually claim the Jean, Mary and Cindy lineup as their favorite, in terms of cohesion and harmony, but I think Mary, Sherrie and Cindy had the tightest harmonies in studio as well as live. Their blend was out-of-this-world. It showed how much of a in-distinctive harmonizer Cindy could be. Her voice would be lost in the mix between Scherrie's obvious top harmonies and Mary's obvious low harmonies.

    • @Tes7000
      @Tes7000 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After Diana-Mary-Florence, I would say that Jean-Mary-Cindy is my favorite lineup.
      What jumps out at me from this clip and others is how underutilized Cindy was. With just a little coaching in the studio, I could actually hear Cindy singing lead on Up the Ladder to the Roof or Stoned Love. Jean Terrell was a fantastic singer, but the Supremes didn't really need a fantastic singer -- just someone with a nice voice who could carry a tune like Diana did. Cindy could have easily taken over the lead after Diana left. I think Jean and Cindy are actually the only Supremes of any lineup whose voices actually resemble Diana's.
      This video celebrates Cindy, but Mary had a fantastic voice too. It is kind of obvious to me that Gordy didn't really know what to do with the 70s Supremes after Stoned Love, and unlike Marvin Gaye and Steve Wonder, the Supremes weren't able to A&R themselves.

    • @sanskretro
      @sanskretro 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Tes7000 I disagree about Diana Ross not being a fantastic singer. She's one of the best pop singers ever...even with her singing slightly flat at the end of phrases. And I couldn't hear Cindy over Jean Terrell for "Up the Ladder to the Roof." I just can't imagine Cindy singing the song and making me feel the way that Jean Terrell makes me feel. I love the Jean, Cindy and Mary harmonies, though. Cindy's voice is the glue in the backgrounds on "Stoned Love." And Jean subtleties in her vocal delivery on that record still blow me away. The way she phrases "and lo-o-ove" at the end of the second verse still gives me goosebumps.

    • @Tes7000
      @Tes7000 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sanskretro Well, maybe Diana Ross was a fantastic pop singer, but her unique voice did most of the work for her hits. A second reason she was chosen to lead The Supremes was that she tended to sing straight through a melody like Mary Wells. Listening to other white early to mid 60s injenues like Lesley Gore, Shelley Fabares, and Petula Clark, Diana could have easily sung their songs, and audiences would not have even known for sure it was a black woman singing.
      I was not saying that Cindy was better than Jean. I was speculating about what might have happened had Cindy been given the chance to lead in 1970. Her voice had a lot of different qualities, which we can clearly hear in this video, and I think her leads would have been credible and uniquely Cindy -- different from Jean for sure, but credible nonetheless.

    • @sanskretro
      @sanskretro 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Tes7000 I know you didn't mean that Cindy was better than Jean. And I agree with you about Diana's voice being unique. But she had more than a unique voice; she sang with conviction. Her lead on the song "Funny How Time Slips Away" on The Supremes' country album is a perfect example. While Mary had a straight-up good soulful tone like Frankie Lymon in the beginning and Florence had a voice that could shock a crowd with its resonance, Diana sang with a jazzy conviction like Frankie Lymon. In my humble opinion...
      Lesley Gore is good, too...

      I think Cindy could have been a fine lead for The Supremes in the 70s had she been given the chance. In the studio, the producers would have obviously done some coaching to get the right vocals out of her. The Supremes didn't need a dynamic singer to follow Diana as lead. The Supremes just needed someone with a voice in a range similar to Diana's who could carry a tune like Diana did. Jean and Cindy were the only two Supremes of any lineup with voices with any similarity to Diana's.
      Mary and Cindy were both tremendously underutilized in the 70s Supremes. After Stoned Love, I think Gordy honestly had no idea what to do with the group.

      @@JuanitoEsBonito Interesting. In her interviews I have seen, I have never heard her say anything like that, but it makes sense. After singing behind the supremely talented Patti LaBelle and the extremely glamorous Diana Ross, I can see her not having the most confidence.
      She finally did find the confidence to gamble on herself when she attempted a solo career in the 80s, but it's too bad she didn't branch out earlier. I read a rumor that I hope is true -- that Jean Terrell and Cindy reached out to Florence Ballard about forming a group when Cindy was fired from The Supremes in 1976, which was tragically shortly before Florence died. That was a brilliant concept, but it should have happened in the fall of 1973 when Jean left The Supremes -- with Cindy going with Jean instead of returning to The Supremes. That was the time to do a Jean-Cindy-Florence group with all three ladies having opportunities to lead. Jean never seemed to be a jealous lead singer in The Supremes, so I don't think she would have minded such a concept.
