Marla is such a great Mary Robert! I feel that her body language perfectly conveys the character's sweet shyness without being over-the-top jittery. Especially here, when she sings the first "Gloria in exelcis deo" and Deloris makes a remark about her voice being too quiet. That little apologetic smile/quirk of her lip she gives her before retreating really sold me on her character. And the way she looks so in awe at her own untapped potential, like she herself couldn't believe it, after so many years of learning to be modest and quiet. Especially when she presses her palm to her cheek, something I've seen the movie Mary Robert do as well. And the way she seems to purse or bite her lip occasionally-- Aaarrggh, I have so many feelings for this little postulant nun!
I watch this over and over again. This. This is amazing. You literally feel joy WITH them as find out that they can sing and that when they sing its beautiful. When Marla hits that note you are just as shocked as the other Sisters are. It's just amazing. Wonderful. Truly brilliant acting. I am just sad that it went off Broadway so quickly, and kicking my self more when I didn't see it when it came to Cincinnati!
I played Mary Patrick in my school's production of Sister Act last fall and I don't think I'll ever find a part I love as much as I did this character and show
Everyone's so impressed by Mary Robert's note, but I'm more impressed with Mary Patrick's note at 3:55 . I'm playing her in an amature production of Sister Act at the moment and it's pretty difficult!!! :P
The crazy high belting is thrilling but there is a baseline kicking so much ass on this song. She’s like “no I’m not gonna blend. I’m gonna hold this whole chord up with the sheer power of my midrange belt”
If I ever make it as a film producer, one of my dream projects would be an animated feature adaptation of this show. My ideal voice cast would include Uzo Aduba as Deloris, Christine Baranski as Mother Superior, Melissa McCarthy as Mary Patrick and, if she were still alive at that point, Rita Moreno as Mary Lazerus.
i was dying at this song, because I learned this song by a person who couldn't be more tone deaf to the point she was screaming it not singing she was screaming and that's what I hear.
I cannot deal with how amazingly joyful this song is. Makes me cry every time.
SAME

I totally agree with all of this! It's so well done.
Why doesn't everyone just choose the key they like the best? Kills me every time
This has been my 7am alarm for 7 years ever since I performed in the Amateur version at Glasgow King’s Theatre. Never fails to uplift the soul! ❤
Saw the uk tour production a month ago in Glasgow kings theatre !
it's a high G. Crazy how powerfull and controlled she hit's that super-high note in chest voice!!!! Lovable
That's not chest voice buddy 😂😂
She's kill her vocals if she used full chest voice every night
I would say she did that in more of a heady mix and she sounded amazing !

I still love this so many years after. And an absent-minded Sister Mary Martin of Tours quoting the Passion Gospel for Good Friday is funny!

Girl im playing it this august for my school production im excited 😄
Im playing it in a upcoming production at a local theater
I'm auditioning for her in two weeks! We shall form a Mary Patrick alliance if I get it, haha
Saw this a few weeks ago when my choir when my choir went on tour, it was sooo good! Marla Mindelle makes my world
That was spectacular, I see why it was up for a Tony Award
Belting a high g! Wow. That takes SKILL
+Simran Kambo Marla Mindelle is a master at her mixed belt voice. Soooo jealous
yes I have :) It's hard to pick a favorite.
She also belts an A
Yeah i was just cast as Mary Robert and its not an easy task its very intimidating
patina energy always inspires me

I'm a man and I do it sleeping...
+Ric Sol I am playing Mary Roberts at an armature performance
+Olivia Pike I'll repeat... i'm a man and I can do both patrick and roberts. Way too easy....
Ric Sol you can sing an E6?
i think it’s because she belts it instead of using her head voice
THAT RUN AT 7:28 BY SISTER MARY ROBERTS IM QUAKING
"it used to set off my uncle's seizures!" LMBO

It's a mix, but still incredibly impressed (belting that high is not possible)
What a performance!

Mary Lazarus is absolutely hysterical.. "So now she's got Diane Carol in here, wailin' away..."
that note makes me cry! SING IT, BABY!!!!

Phew! Good thing you didn't record this. That would be bad. At least this is definitely not a recording.
7:46 “break it up” kills me every time
I love when Marla tries to copy Patina at 4:54 LOL!
1:06 is my favorite!

Can anyone tell me what Marla's high note is, at the end of the phrase starting at 6:35?
