    Excellent video. I have been crocheting for almost 50 years and now I teach others. It is good for me to learn other methods of holding the yarn to help those who have trouble holding their yarn the way I do. Thanks for the video.

    Very much a beginner, and was also quite discouraged because I thought there was a single 'correct' way to hold the yarn, and I just could not get comfortable with it. This video has given me an excellent way to ease my way into crocheting, and freed me to develop my own style. Thank you!

    • @handsthatrockcrochet

      There is nothing more frustrating than following someone else's perfectly good technique that is completely useless for you. Whatever way you find the most comfortable and enjoyable In holding your yarn, is the best. As time goes on you will find out that your method keeps adapting or maturing (at least it works for me). Sometimes when I crochet, I change from one method to another for holding yarn or crochet hook ( th-cam.com/video/i5D1srDxwJc/w-d-xo.html ). These methods (including others) allows me to relax different muscles in my hands and tendons in my fingers. After all crocheting is a form of exercise and relaxation is inevitable. So go ahead in creating your own style. All the best.

    Thank you so much for the 5 ways to hold yarn. I've crocheted for a long time but have injured my hands throughout the years, plus have some arthritis in a couple of fingers. I'm going to try a different way of holding my yarn, trying all 5 of your methods, and hopefully one or more of them will allow me to crochet pain free! (Well, I'd be happy with less pain... Doesn't have to be pain free!) Lol I don't want to ask the Good Lord for too much at a time. I'll take whatever I can get! Thank you so much again. I looked overyour videos and have subscribed to your channel. You do beautiful work!!

      Dear Char. Welcome to handsthatrockcrochet and thanks for the sub.
      I can definitely identify with you . Pain is one of the things that hinder and stop people crocheting. It's to do with repetitive use of muscles around the shoulders, (the biceps ), all around the arms and hands. It can even lead to tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome (hands) etc. This is why I rotate between different ways of holding my yarns while crocheting, to limit pain. I found out also that good sit posture with frequent breaks, helps.
      Have a good one, from Kenny #handsthatrockcrochet

      I wrap my yarn around my finger and have seen so many people only wrap it around their pinkie finger that I thought I was doing it wrong. I wanted to set out to figure this out and I ran across your video. Thank you so very much for doing this! I now know that the way I do it is ok. I feel the most comfortable with that way. Again, thank you very much!
      Oh! I will he trying your in and out method! I like it!

    Thank you for showing various methods. I've been having a hard time because what comes naturally hurts after a little while due to an injury. I think method 1 will work for me with an adjustment to my middle finger instead of my pointer finger (the one that hurts) and some practice getting the yarn to flow well.

    • @handsthatrockcrochet
      @handsthatrockcrochet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well done Kat. You are not alone, I feel you also. Kudos to you for adapting and adding to your ways of holding yarns. It's not easy to use your hands or do anything repetitively without causing injuries. This is why it is advisable to have more than one way of crocheting or doing anything (including using computerkeypads)
      Take it from me, I also have my own share of injuries (even in my shoulders). It might not be that obvious, but I change the way I hold my crochet hooks from time to time in my tutorials.
      Why not try reviewing how you hold your crochet hooks, it might help us. You can change from using the knife method to fork method. I have a tutorial out on this th-cam.com/video/i5D1srDxwJc/w-d-xo.html or you can search here on TH-cam.
      All the best. Stay healthy, wash, wash your hands and if in doubt wash your hands.

    I am now to crochet, currently using number 5! still trying to figure out how to keep a goof tension with it

    • @handsthatrockcrochet
      @handsthatrockcrochet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings Malibu Milk. It is good to hear from you. I rejoice at the taught of you being able to crochet😀👍🏽Well done.The pick and drop method (number 5) of How to Hold your yarn 5 ways th-cam.com/video/kE55__pq8HI/w-d-xo.html is a fantastic method and you have made the right choice for you.
      Yarn tension control is improved by constant practice to develop yarn and crochet hook memory. Once this memory has been developed, you will not have to think about tension control while crocheting. (It might sound weird to some, but its very true).
      Check out How to hold crochet hook th-cam.com/video/i5D1srDxwJc/w-d-xo.html it might help.
      The issue with crocheting is getting enough time out of busy schedule to sit down and crochet. What helps me is that each time I pick up a hook and a yarn, I think of it as a therapeutic treatment and a memory stimulant for me. Research has shown that crafts like crochet, knitting, puzzle solving etc all have tremendous blessings and benefits for body, mind and soul. Have a great day.

      Lani M, it's great news to ascertain that there are people passionately wanting to learn this wonderful art of crocheting. You are authentic in adapting and using your technique of how you hold your crochet hook. Lani, you can also tweak any of the other methods to your fancy and comfortability.
      Crochet is just like painting. Two artists can never paint the same scenery exactly the same way. Put your own signature on your crochet journey and projects. All the best. Thanks, from Kenny.

    I’m still a beginner in crochet and I haven’t realized I’ve been using the pick and flip method, and recently I’m having issues since I started crocheting again, my pinky finger hurts now whenever I crochet for hours like if its bend for quite some time whenever I straighten it it hurts and somehow it looks kinda swollen or so I think so I’m not sure if its a normal thing or should I be worried

    • @handsthatrockcrochet
      @handsthatrockcrochet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ thatmysteriousgirl. Pain is not something that anybody should endure or ignore. Crocheting is similar to doing exercises. Execirse can be done correctly or incorrectly - It all depends upon preparation and the right techniques- which is also true for the art of crocheting, knitting, crafting, looming, etc or any repetitive actions. People can easily strain or injure that part of the body.
      Sorry to hear that your pinky finger hurts. Try to see your doctor to rule out any underlying problem. Your pain might be superficial or otherwise. Let him or her know that you crochet (if possible go with a crochet hook and yarn).
      If the pain is related to crocheting, there are several things you can do to correct that:
      1. Moisturise your hands - use a good moisturiser to hydrate and prevent dryness or cracking.
      2. Posture and positioning- sitting upright not slouching helps to prevent straining of generalised muscles.
      3. Tensions - there are different tensions in crocheting. When the you hold your yarn and hook too tight, it can create a stiffing tension of the hands.
      4. Relax - having a relaxed mind and hands whilst crocheting helps to easy any tension.
      5.Breaks - regular breaks whilst crocheting is very important. When you exercise, you have to take a break. This also applies to crochet. On average people burn about 150 calories in an hour, due to constant movements of fingers.
      6. Change- if you can, master more than one way of holding your yarn and hook. I alternate between two to three methods whilst crocheting to prevent straining of my fingers.
      7. Healing - allow your pinky finger to heal. Recover fully before crocheting.
      8. Do not give up - crochet is an enjoyable craft.
      Keep in touch with #handsthatrockcrochet for more updates. Hope your finger gets better very soon. Keep in touch. From Kenny. Have a great crochet journey.

      Hands That Rock Crochet not sure what happened really, I used a different yarn back when I started and I had no issues with it probably because I was doing it slowly what I’m using now is a different yarn (the type that can be used in doilies) do I’m not sure if I’m doing it too fast since I now can crochet faster than when I started
      My pinky is getting better now, been doing the hand exercises/stretching I found which I do in between which really helps alot too, the pain is lesser now and its getting better, I may have been wrong with it looking swollen and thank you for your tips ☺️
