my love letter to homestuck is finally complete!!!! it isn't as perfect as i wanted it to be, but it has my heart in it, and that's really all i could ask for. i've never animated before so this was a really interesting challenge.
i'm going to write something more flowery soon(tm) after i've slept (ur friend horizon has been running leslie knope sleeping hours lately) but i really have to say a huge thank you to every single listener, every person who posted in the homestuck tags over the years, every team member, every professional classpector, and The Huss himself --
thank you. you showed me the path to my future and gave me a hell of a lot of hope and heartbreak with it. i wouldn't have it any other way.

ok so i was like in the dead of animating this frame by frame and that one came up and i just LOST it. like, just reading "the water's raisin! :)" in my roxy headcanon voice made the process that much easier. like think the "merry chrimbus! merry chsirismas!" vine tone of voice but with that line
Think my favorite line of this is,

Makes me feel it's true, though HS is finished, it still exists and will never not have existed. They all will continue to go on with each reader.
I love that that was Dirk's line in the cgat. It would have been cool if both he and Hal said it together.

it is true!!! and i also wanted it to bring forward that hope that every part of them still exists in terms of the story -- one of my biggest heartaches in homestuck was the dead daves scenario, and that "every part of us still exists" line was meant to be attributed to him from the beginning, even before i decided on the chat format. i'm really glad you found some deeper meaning there!!

That was amazing. Roxy typoing the lyrics and Calliope coming in to correct her was hilarious. And the lyrics themselves were great too. I'll second the love that's already been given to Dave and Dirk's "every part of us still exists // every fragment is endless", and I also loved "we are wandering stars // in sweet harmony // we're all part of a symphony // of a changing universe", it reminded me a lot of the kind of language you used in Pyrocumulus and Downtime ("we are synchronus, there's something connecting us", "we are a half-painted canvas, an unfinished song") and added to the nostalgia. (Seriously, the fact that I only got into Homestuck a year and a half ago and I'm already capable of feeling nostalgic for it is really something.)
The animation was pretty good, but I can't help but think it was missing something. I feel like a pumpkin just below the bottom left corner of the computer monitor would have really added a lot to the scene, but unfortunately I can't find any pumpkins in the image whatsoever. (Yes, this is totally just a really elaborate and awkward "what pumpkin" joke.)

I love this line. Because when people saw the planets in the sky not aligning with the other stars they beleived these "Wandering Stars" to be gods. Plus it's pretty true for the characters as they are, well, wandering in SBURB trying to figure it out.

this song was released almost 2 years ago now and it is so surreal to go back to it because it makes me cry every time. it sends me back to when i first started reading it, when i finished it, what came after, and everything in between all at once. it overwhelms me in a way that nothing else can. it is so beautiful.

This was so well done and as stunning and funny as the visuals were, the music was on a whole other level. There's been about a billion songs for and about Homestuck written and somehow this manages to stand out and shove them all aside. Seriously, thanks for this. Ok this is definitely my favourite of your new/redo pieces so far (maybe because I have nothing to compare it to 😅) but omg I love it, the chat thing is so simple yet effective and just I had chills/shivers the entire way through 👍
I love how literally almost every line is custom-tailored to the one saying it. I'd give an example but I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find at least one lol
Decided to try and find each one, since I'm gay.
TG: we began a story with every step - Dave was one of the first characters ever introduced to the comic, and the first one to appear in pesterchum before in the comic itself. In addition, the notion of beginning, and the constant movement of every step, evokes the aspect of Time.
EB: and rewrote it with every breath! - June was the one who "retconned" the timeline, essentially rewriting the story. Also, she's a hero of Breath.
TT: And we tried to understand through education. - Rose was a Seer whose development often relied on the notion of seeking information you don't need to have. That's how she went grimdark.
GG: and we tried to live in our imagination!!! - Jade was a dreamer, and literally lived in her imagination in that sense.
TA: 2ome thiing2 don't back down. - Sollux was the one who knew that Alternia was doomed and how it would be doomed, and he knew it wouldn't back down. No timeline would go any farther than his.
TG: the waters raisin! - Roxy is the hero of Void, an aspect associated with water. In addition, he lived in Earth B2, which was flooded with water after the coming of Condy.
AC: :33 < a green purrizon! - Nepeta's green, haha.
CG: A THOUSAND PAGES
GC: 1MPOS3D ON ON3 4NOTH3R - Karkat and Terezi were two of the trolls who were most active in consulting the kids; they were literally symbolic for the readers of Homestuck at one point. In addition, Hivebent begins almost 2000 pages after the beginning of Homestuck.
GT: Us young adventurers! - Jake is an adventurer, haha.
AG: Jump a tier!!!!!!!! - Vriska was the one who introduced the God Tiers to June in Act 5, which are literally described as tiers above the top of the echeladder.
CC: Eac)( life we mig)(t )(ave lived t)(roug)(... - Feferi is a hero of Life, haha. In addition, she's the only beta troll to also play a significant role on Beforus as its empress, and the one responsible for its unique culling system. Therefore, she led multiple lives.
TG: every part of us still exists
TT: Every fragment is endless. - Dave, as Davepeta, was the one who introduced the Ultimate Self to the reader. Dirk, at the same time, was known as one of the characters with the most "fragments" to himself, to the point where many people HC him as having DID. In addition, he was one of the two characters (alongside Rose) to first reach the Ultimate Self in HS2.
EB: this world we've walked on into... - June was the one who opened the door to Universe C in Act 7.
CC: T)(e water's rising! - Feferi is a seadweller, haha.
AA: maybe you and i will be reborn too!!! - Aradia was the third character to reach the God Tiers, and the only one who was dead for an extended period of time before reaching them due to her unique situation. In a sense, she was literally reborn.

i listened to horizon for the first time in high school, more than ten years ago. these fansongs were on every playlist and i showed all my homestuck friends. today, in 2024, halfway through my shift at work, this song popped up in my recommended list. i clicked on it because of nostalgia, because i suddenly missed horizon’s voice, because i had nothing else to listen to. now i’m in tears at my desk, just sobbing. so many emotions came rushing back!! so many new feelings this song brings up within me!! it’s a wonder. it’s a gift. (also i’m really grateful that no one else is in the office right now.)
horizon!! you are so so amazing. you have so much talent and so much skill in your craft!! i’m going to listen to everything today, and i’ll probably still remember the words. what an impact your music had on me as a teenager, and how powerful is it that it still affects me so much now?? i’m doing numbers! data entry! and yet suddenly i feel energized and fulfilled!!

honestly, this music has done similar things for me. I was in high school when I was writing this stuff, and to know that there were a lot of people out there kind of growing up with me through my music is humbling on a level i don't think i can reasonably express.
but i am really glad it brought you some good memories and was able to inspire you again! i'm inspired by your inspiration, honestly, lol. you can find fulfillment anywhere; i do a similar job now being a search rater and the media that i surround myself with when i work has a huge impact on how i feel. good movies like disney's soul or a good ghibli film will do the same, and i really recommend those if you have the space of mind when you're working or after/before.
but truly, thank YOU! i'm really happy to hear that my musical journey was a touchpoint for you, and i'm glad you managed to find your way back. may your journey forward have plenty of checkpoints like these to see how far you've come and how much more good is yet to arrive. you deserve it

Deep down, it's the best thing in my life, the confusing yet epic plot, the community, the games, the bonds between me and the characters, oh hell the great GREAT characters! i'm in a big work phase right now so i'm behind in comments, but this is an awesome idea!! i'm going to remaster this one a lot before i put it up for download, and i'll include an a capella thing somewhere, even if it's unlisted. part of this song (there's a high pitched glimmer synth that i'm particularly annoyed about) wasn't leveled properly in my haste, and it's in a lot of the vocal range, so that's a big contributor. i'm not sure exactly how i'm going to put everything together (i really wanted to do a different kind of animation for this originally and i might still do that for the remastered version) but i will definitely include some vocal only tracks in the future!!
