Both are treasures. My AE-3905 though howls on strong MW/SW signals unless I leave the volume low. I'd like to have a SW-100, but only of the problem-free serial number. Thanks for this video!
I have just been given a pristine Philips AE3905 set, in a very posh dedicated A4 size 'Philips' embossed Leather case with with the smaller carrying case inside and Clip-on retractable wire SW Antenna (Philips Part No. SBC 3581), which I gather clips onto the units telescopic FM antenna, with the instructions and stereo headphones, I don't think it has ever been used, looks a quality bit of kit, will have to have a proper play with it once I have viewed you video - thanks.....
wow! great quality video along with some really nice receivers. never seen or even heard of the Phillips receiver...very impressive but so was the sony. nice job
You have a good collection of radio devices !!! I love radios, but in Mexico City I can not buy many brands. Specially european brands, Philips and Grundig. Thanks for sharing this video, the Philips is a lovely radio :)
I had seen Sony ICF-SW 100 in a showroom in 1996.But I could not recognize it that it's so greatest radio. I found it on eBay, but there are no facility of PayPal in Pakistan.
Currently Philips is worth more because it is becoming more difficult to find, but personally I would prefer to put my money on Sony if I did not have it
Very very nice little radios, i think the Sony is more sensitiv, also it has better sound then the Philips. But again, i like both radios! Thank you for uploading this video.
SW listening is a very interesting and mesmerizing hobby, although many stations have closed down or cut their broadcasts (e.g. to Europe). congrats on your Philips/Sony rx equipment. happy continuation. I used to tune in regularly to the Voice of America's Pacific, South Asian, East Asian, African, Caribbean and European Service (on a Collins R-390A hollow state rx), which were run down to the late 90s on vintage equipment (like the Woofferton relais station/Essex) dating from WW II but have now been dismantled or focused strictly on target areas only... Afraid we will all have to take to the Internet Radio sooner or later... Bye bye, free and independent Short Wave. - On the other hand, thanks to the Internet there now is a 7d/24hrs reception available of all sorts of foreign language services of the BBC worldwide, of various Canadian radio stations, of radio stations in South, East and West Africa, of ABC (Australia) and Radio New Zealand, which in the 'old days' was dependent on solar activity in the ionosphere, let alone of Radio Hong Kong and Singapore, which you could not even get on your SW receiver in your wildest dreams. Good old days - brave new world... Good old British Empire - brave new British Empire... (hur hur).
Not sure what you were trying to show here but yours was pretty much my experience with the Philips AE3905. Adorable little unit, great functionality but nothing actually works. It buzzes contentedly but can only tune about one station through its auto-tune function on short wave. And all those stops on all those non-existent stations!! Boy, does that bring back memories! Tuning manually does sometimes give a few more stations but the SW band is so gigantic that this soon becomes really annoying. (Actually i am amazed that the Sony needed the SW station to be plugged in manually. Can't it tune either? You seem to show inordinate amounts of time being spent doing things which a $2 unit could do easily, such as tuning on FM??) Putting the speaker there in its own side on the 3905 was a great idea but it is such poor quality that the sound is terrible. and there is that ever-present buzzing. All in all, I can see there was a reason this 3905 lasted on the market for about 20 minutes and seems to have been withdrawn. I Have hardly seen it anywhere and it doesn't seem to come up on ebay. I am surprised you managed to buy one?
I bought the radio few years ago, and I wanted to show it in Internet people who did not see it at all, because the radio is special. Event now it presents very well.
I just bought a rare vintage PHILIPS AE 3905 but the audio output on SW and AM isn't loud at all... FM is loud. kool novelty and a rare radio , built well but- I am gonna let it go and buy a modern radio I think that I can hear better..... if anyone wants it let me know...lol

Both are good. The real question is which can be found cheaper at auction

After 10 years, do you still have the radio? 😄
