Dankje Jan.
That is correct and would have been better for the drainage to work. However, these lillybulb farmers can only use a field once every 7 years due to regulations here. So they have to hire (or rent? not sure what the correct English term is) a new field every year. With rubble or stones around the pipes, it will eventualy work it's way to the surface again and then you end up with rubble and stones in your field, that is probably why they didn't do that.
Well, sometimes farmers at certain soils add sand and put that just around the drainage pipes. In NL farmers at some soils often use those ribbed and perforated polyethylene (PE) drainage pipes covered with coconut fiber or either with Propypropylene (PP) fiber cover. The cover is to prevent the pipes form getting clogged to easily with small soil particles and so on. The PP cover is expected to last longer. Therefore it is less of a need to put sand or grit, although some farmers combine them, the PE tubes covered ànd the sand added around it, that to optimise the functioning and durability of the drainage system. Oxidizing iron (rost) transported by the drained water can cause problems for the small pores in the drainage pipes. Although the drainage pipes once clogged or even being blocked can be cleaned with a dedicated drainage pipe cleaning machine, spraying water under high pressure starting from the canal.
How sturdy is the pipe we tried with round tile drainage pipe what they usually use in this part of Canada and it only lasted a few years the pipe in this video looks different
Not sure. The field next to it, had drainage pipes put in a few years earlier. I think last year, or the year before (can't remember) they had to put new pipes in as they were growing lilly bulbs on that field again (only allowed once every 7 years, and the previous pipes were put in 9 years ago). When they put the new pipes in, I think pretty much only the plastic tips (ends) of the pipes were left, the rest... well, as good as gone.
The pipe they are using is cocos 1050, it's a polyethylene pipe with a burlap filterjacket. Those will last between 15 to 20 years depending on the acidity of the soil and the maintenance you do on the endpipes. The burlap will rot away eventually so the pipes will fill up with sand when the filter is gone, plugging up the pipes. You can prevent this by putting pipes with a polyethylene or polypropylene filter around it in the ground. Polypropylene is a fine mesh filter of about 450 micron maximum. They are the common kind of filters these days but will easily plug up with iron oxide if your ground has a lot of iron in it. That's when you want the polyethylene fiber filter, it's a bit courser material of about 1000 micron and the material is smoother so the iron oxide won't stick to it. If you use these plastic filters and you regularly clean the endpipes those filters will usually last between 20 to 40 years depending on the quality of the pipe itself
Putting drainage pipes in the ground. They almost always put drainage pipes in the ground before planting lillies, so water on the field can flow away more easely.

Shouldve put stones around the pipe for easier drainage

What are costs of doing it?
I don't know what it costs.
What are the costs of not doing it?
For what purpose they are laying pipe?
To drain excess water.

you wouldnt need this if didnt take all the stones away
This is in the Netherlands and we don't have stones in the soil. So yes... we need this.
