Suzuki Vitara 2017 Review | Driver's Seat

  • Originally launched in 1988, the first-generation Vitara was a rugged and rather playful small 4x4.
    With its Ken and Barbie Jeep looks and low asking price, the Vitara was a popular buy.
    However, over the years, and a bit like Ken no doubt, it’s lost its way, put on weight and those chiselled good looks became a distant memory.
    Suzuki is looking to reverse that trend with the all-new fourth-generation model. Ok, there’s no three door or convertible version anymore but the new model is certainly a huge improvement on what went before, visually at least.
    Gone are the bloated surfaces, replaced by sharp lines, flat panels and rugged SUV body trim.
    It comes with five doors, a choice of two petrol and one diesel engines and is offered in four trim levels, with prices starting from just £14,999.
    Pick between the entry-level 1.6-litre 120PS or a range-topping 1.4-litre Boosterjet 140PS petrol engines, the first of which gets a five-speed manual gearbox and the latter gets a six-speed version.
    If you’re after a diesel then choose carefully between a 1.6-litre DDIS with a six-speed manual, or, oh sorry, that’s your lot.
    Depending on which engine you go, you can choose between front wheel drive or go for full traction mode with Suzuki’s all-wheel drive ALLGRIP in exchange for a little more dosh, although it is standard on the Boosterjet version.
    Once you have your powertrains chosen, there are four trims on offer; SZ4, SZ-T, SZ5 and S.
    We’re testing the range-topping 1.4-litre Boosterjet in S trim which costs from £22,249 on the road.

    Suzuki must be doing something right with the Vitara, it scored a creditable 6th place in the Auto Express driver survey.

    A really well presented review. The vitara delivers the best value and its reliability is outstanding. The thinking man's mini suv.

    Thanks for quite a thorough and honest review. I've been researching the pants off this model, although we will get the auto, and after watching and reading 50+ reviews I'm impressed that your video managed to pack in so much useful stuff in a small package....sort of like the Vitara itself! I understand that recently Suzuki have made efforts to update some aesthetics to the body but nothing groundbreaking. I suggest a potential buyers to test drive the 1.6 standard model first THEN test the 1.4 turbo....it should impress most people and the increase in tow is totally addictive. We will get the auto later this year in silver and pay a little extra for all those black accents you can see if you look hard enough in the video above. We currently have a much older 2.7litre V6 and I simply can't wait for the update, the new 1.4 will give us over twice the fuel economy with (as evidenced first-hand in the extensive test drive) equivalent, if not greater, grunt and far better handling. This is clearly a budget SUV for those who value pure driving experience over soft feel plastics and other bs. Cheers

      Jamie Pickles thanking you. The great thing with the Vitara is a starting price of £14,999 for the base model, so if that means hard plastics, then we can live with that. Loving that Suzuki are keeping prices low and offering plenty with it. Are Suzuki the new Skoda?

    • @skyarc9516

      Yes - if you get winter/all season tyres. After one year of ownership I only have three gripes - crap nav system, poor wet/mud grip and .... the only time I will ever quote Clarkson .... "doors like tracing paper". Yes, really. If you're planning on having something smack into you, ask them politely not to sideswipe you - else your next motor will be a wheelchair.

    own one and like it, But and I know all manufacturers make a big deal about it, those infotainment systems in cars, I find them so distracting and downright dangerous I drive with it turned off anyone agree ?

    • @douglasnewitt1196
      @douglasnewitt1196 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also find that the infotainment system is distracting, and something I could do without. The Garmin sat nav is too fiddly, and time consuming to use. I much prefer the simplicity of my old tomtom input set up.

    Great review, Matthew. I do like Suzuki engineering, but from the look of your film, and what you were saying, it is a bit plasticky and tinny looking.

    • @vladtrendy
      @vladtrendy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Feudal Serfer not surprised by amount of outside noise entering the cabin - the doors are soooo light and cheap looking. Thats the price for relatively low weight for 4WD SUV.
      At 5:55 author mentions 52 mpg, which translates to 5.4 L/100 km. I get 8 L/100 km on Nissan Tiida with 1.6 AT which doesn't provide 4WD nor amount of torque.

    • @skyarc9516
      @skyarc9516 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It IS a bit tinny, but after trying all the other options, this was the best fun to drive.

  • @theRealAV8r
    @theRealAV8r 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good review, but ultimately rejected the Vitara, just not my style - despite the tech, still too 'oldschool' looking inside and too plain outside. And hard plastics to save cost isn't unusual, but Suzuki needs to improve cabin noise, especially from the engine - its not that hard, or expensive. But _great_ car for the money, feature rich for what you pay, and quite solid where necessary.

      gavin archer are those competitors in the same category? The 3008 has quite a bit more quality than the Vitara, and in my country the 3008 costs almost 3x as much as the Vitara.

    please stop quoting manufacturers miles/kilometres fuel performance. You and everyone now knows it is total BS and has no relation to real life driving, yes I own the model and am a careful driver I get much less than your quotes for MPG. If you must mention these figures qualify it by saying it is done under controlled conditions and expect less than manufacturers figures.

    • @driversseat659
      @driversseat659  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally understand what you are saying and every single time mpg figures are quoted the line "on an official combined cycle" ALWAYS accompanies it.
      However, it would be remiss of us not to quote them and likely to cause more uproar than not quoting.
      Where we can, we will always quote the MPG we achieved on our test route either verbally or written underneath the official figures.

    • @skyarc9516
      @skyarc9516 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I consistently get 39 MPG.

    I wish the presenter would talk more fluidly. He punctuates multiple times during each sentence, and, often, between, each, and, every, word. It's so uncomfortable for me to listen to, I stopped watching half way through.
