I'm a big Cung Le fan and while the only obvious similarity between their styles is flashy moves derived from their TMA backgrounds I've got to say that Daniels is impressive. His speed, agility and power are phenomenal. Cung himself has been criticized for the lack of power in his hands. Daniels' strikes seem to have more power than Cung Le. The biggest question mark for his MMA transition is how will he address the ground game? He doesn't have a grappling background as far as I know.
To those of you who actually know about the rules of combat sports be it kickboxing or MMA punches to the back of the head are not only illegal but dangerous and give an unfair disadvantage to the person receiving them. At 2:21 Daniels hit Lirette with a blatantly illegal looping right to the back of his skull and then struck him at the rear base of his skull while he was on the ground. That is absolute bullshit refing and proof that WCL lets their poster boy get away with anything. Nonsense.
@OnePissedTiger Raymond Daniels did get beat rather easily in a Strikeforce MMA fight by Metcalf who simply took him to the ground. So your theory checks out. But imagine if someone had his standup combined with a takedown defense and ground game. That would be very exciting. I wish more MMA fighters used advanced striking techniques like this.
@johnle69 well you are correct there, it is a part but often it can get dull.Obviously it has alot to do with mma but this can be more entertaining than some mma fights and vice versa.
even though Daniels did terrible in mma its still entertaining to watch his movement and attacks...may not be the most practical but he is still talented
i like raymond's ability to use pointfighting principles in full contact i.e. explosion, angling. a lot of his "showboating" mess with his opponents' minds and actually set up his ko punches and kicks.
remember that the fact that there is a ground game in ufc is beautiful ! technically most of the fights in ufc go to the ground . . id rather see someone break someone elses arm intead of beat them up with punches !
Cung finished Fryklund off with punches as well. People have said the same thing about Cung's opponents as you're saying about Daniels. They may look weak because Daniels is so much better. Daniels style is a blend of Karate and Tae Kwon Do. I've actually seen more kicks in his arsenal than Cung has with far more devastating power. I'm not calling Daniels the next Cung Le only saying he could be a force if he develops a good takedown defense. We'll find out Friday at the next Strikeforce event.
the first punch you point out is negligible, maybe partially connecting with the back of the head but more of the contact was on the side of the head. the second punch when Lirette was down completely missed. on the first punch, the ref's vision was blocked by daniel's body so he couldn't see where the punch landed. irregardless, Lirette was outmatched from the beginning.
@GrandUltimateMe I agree he uses kicks that wouldn't work in mma becuase the rules allow him to do so in wcl. But i imagine he wouldn't fight the same way as he does in wcl in mma (i don't actually know becuase i haven't been able to find a video of his mma fight: i am aware he lost though.)
I saw many videos of Raymond Daniels, and he´s a very good fighter!! But I don´t know what type of marcial art he realy practice. The texts says "Karate", but I thing it isn´t true Japanese Karate. It´s remember me the American Taekwondo ATA (Songhan) or a litle of ITF Taekwondo... maybe a litle of my Brazilian Capoeira... Somebody knows? Thanks. @MutenKami You have to keep in mind that everyone wants to compare two different sports when you bring up UFC and WFL. Comparing the two is like comparing Soccer with American Football, they simply have 2 different set of rules. UFC allows grappling, WFL doesnt. You can bash either one all day, but ultimately the bashers become the ignorant ones trying to compare the two. WFL is faster paced and set for strikers and hard hitting. Hardly ever did I see a match won by decision.
Agreed, Oppp2 and Kellykleinman. The sports media and journalists that cover sports always need something sensational to write to invoke attention and this translates into inaccurate and unfair comparisons such as this player will be the next Michael Jordan. In this case, Mr Overconfident here is being billed as the next Cung Le. Don't get me wrong, this guy has skillful and flashy kicks but he wants to dominate in MMA. Work on your wrestling and ground skills then maybe, just maybe.
raymond daniles is a bist i saw him today fighting about 20 cm away from me i could tauch this guy he is awesoem he owned everyone in his weight kategory the guy that took the most points from him was from hugary and he took 3 points from him the match score was 14-3
Daniels loses the fight immediately, he falls on his ass, but the rules allow him to get back up. In the UFC we would have seen some G'n'P; but this WCL definitely encourages the fighters to try out kicks that you just don't get to see in UFC - too risky, as proven by Daniels falling on his ass.
i don't see that WCL is tailored to point karate people. Most of the fighters in the WCL come from a full contact/kickboxing/muay thai background. The points in WCL aren't given for just touching like point sparring. Points have to be earned like boxing. Chuck did come from a point fighting background but the contact back then way harder than point fighting these days. It wasn't uncommon to see blood and broken noses during tournaments of the 60's and 70's.
@Helios910 It's MMA not UFC , and if you understand wrestling and grappling Greco , Judo , Jiu Jitsu , Freestyle and so on can be very beautiful. Stalling on the feet or the ground is just as boring. I love and watch kickboxing and muay thai as do I participate in kickboxing and boxing. I am however a mixed martial artist and I love the complete aspect to it , the less limitations and the variations make for the beauty of the sport.
@tmnt53 Daniels got destroyed in a MMA fight. He fought Jeremiah Metcalf in Strikeforce. Metcalf took him down at will, and beat the crap out of him. The only significant standing strike was scored by Metcalf. Daniels stand up was shit in a real fight.
Maybe a few coplainers womt get it but I love his cockieness. He has a reason to be cocky,I would probably be to if I was that good. Because of his cockieness his opponents can be discouraged and more easily beaten,The more sure you are about yourself th less your opponent will beIts not like Mohammed Ali was humble, and yet he was one of the best.
well whenever i watch the point karate sparring matches i usually see guys swinging and flailing with their hands just 2 get a point. WCL is kinda like that... u must constantly attack or get penalised. Although guys here have much more technique. A str8 muay thai fighter who is slower paced would prolly be penalised alot. And Chuck norris is from the point Karate background. That's just my opinion.
half? really? where do you get your information? if they arent using real martial arts in the ring such as muay thai, wrestling and brazilian jiu jitsu then what are they using? the sport argument is stupid, there needs to be a safe place for people to test their skills.
@Helios910 well then u dont appreciate the whole aspect of mma then, holding people against the cage and whats called "dirty boxing" is all part of mma.
Entertaining yes but fighting, no. Holding and groundgame can be a bit boring sometimes I agree. But its such a huuge part of fighting that without it becomes a sport of punching and kicking.
raymond daniels is one of the best fighters the sport karate world has ever seen, so those of you who dont know who he is, or what he's contributed to it then quite frankly, you should shut your mouth.
spinning back kicks are my favorite kicks but lol watching daniels makes them boring for me, daniel needs to get into MMA he'll get stronger. but will hopefully bring more karate into UFC and MMA
this guy would not last two minutes in the ufc...and how did helios910 get so many thumbs up? that "fighters going to the ground" thing is an artform...grappling is an artform that will destroy this guy in seconds...yes this stuff is cool if you like strikers but when you want to watch real mma go check out the ufc..also i would like to add that his showboating is a disgrace to the teaching of karate...yeah great sportsmanship..."you shame yourself with no honor" lol
Why are we comparing apples to oranges okay he lost in a mma match the best fighters in the ufc lost before this Guy fought different fights with different rules most fighters in the ufc either practice ju jitsu or wrestling and a lot of them aren't very good strikers. Now how about this take a few guys from ufc or strikeforce and bring them here how long will they last some use the ground to stall because they can't fighter. Being able to lock a joint doesn't make a great fighter or showboating
raymond daniels isnt actually karate fighter and style of fighting that he uses is tkd and karate no muay thai and he cannot compte in pro taekwondo unless he have black belt 1. dan

you wrote this comment right before i was born…

Raymond Daniels is a 6th degree Black Belt in Kenpo and Shotokan Karate as well as a 5th Black in Tae Kwon Do.
@OnePissedTiger You are right...Daniels was beaten very quickly in his fist MMA bout
i like raymond's ability to use pointfighting principles in full contact i.e. explosion, angling. a lot of his "showboating" mess with his opponents' minds and actually set up his ko punches and kicks.
@yardkyle i agree chek his mma fight he s not so cocky there
remember that the fact that there is a ground game in ufc is beautiful !
technically most of the fights in ufc go to the ground . . id rather see someone break someone elses arm intead of beat them up with punches !
DAMN! a K.O. just doesn't get more perfect than that. sweet!
hes my coach

Nice finish...that was bad ass.
i like WCL better than WEC or UFC because its full contact and it doesnt end up with one guy on top of another just sitting there
the first punch you point out is negligible, maybe partially connecting with the back of the head but more of the contact was on the side of the head. the second punch when Lirette was down completely missed. on the first punch, the ref's vision was blocked by daniel's body so he couldn't see where the punch landed. irregardless, Lirette was outmatched from the beginning.

The worst injury I ever got in a bout was a toe nail to the eye
he wasn't arrogant he lacked confidence and was beaten mentally before he even fought.

so what , hes entertaining to watch!!!
better than boring wrestlers with half assed ground n pound

i really like watching both this and ufc but it all comes down to the matchmaking....i dont think thats one word...oh well.
@tmnt53 Daniels got destroyed in a MMA fight. He fought Jeremiah Metcalf in Strikeforce. Metcalf took him down at will, and beat the crap out of him. The only significant standing strike was scored by Metcalf. Daniels stand up was shit in a real fight.
meh.. i see ur point. I guess that was what Chuck Norris had in mind. Since he tailored WTF to point karate guys.
Maybe a few coplainers womt get it but I love his cockieness. He has a reason to be cocky,I would probably be to if I was that good. raymond daniels comes from tae kwon do ! that an evidence for people who practice that martial art
its not the art, its the person using it
it's an in game thing.
or just have sick timing.

lol he is funny with his cockinness lol he stands right ovver him with a no expression arms raised lol hilarious!
@Helios910 well then u dont appreciate the whole aspect of mma then, holding people against the cage and whats called "dirty boxing" is all part of mma.
Great skills... but the word 'humble' doesn't exactly spring to mind
does ANYBODY in wcl do low kicks?? leg kick shit outta daniels!!!
Unless you actually find self defense worthwhile I suppose.
Entertaining yes but fighting, no. Holding and groundgame can be a bit boring sometimes I agree. But its such a huuge part of fighting that without it becomes a sport of punching and kicking.
that's what i said.

he's "NOT" a thai boxer!
works here not in real life

muay thai fighting style my ass.....

lol god....
he's a thai boxer! so what is your point?lmbao
then you need to learn to get out of the way...
Used to love WCL, and yeah he;s a cocky mofo lol
hate cocky people , so he means nothing to me. mma should be about respect.
This is not a sport,,, and inst tkd, because take the skills of them
this dude is is really full of himself.
This must be a joke.
Daniels is good. But his showboating is lame.
raymond daniels isnt actually karate fighter and style of fighting that he uses is tkd and karate no muay thai and he cannot compte in pro taekwondo unless he have black belt 1. dan
ufc i find less entertaining cuz once the guy is in a hole 90% of the time its over which i find boring.
Booooooring, rather watch a Muay Thai bout. These guys run around way too much.
cocky
yes, more action, more show.. im agree
karate!!!
wow! i like this result because the ,muay thai fighter enter to the ring with an arrogant attitude. So CONGRATULATIONS RAYMOND DANIELS. !
