McCready kept calling Reyes "my little man." But Reyes was the bigger man because he retained his composure and never said a negative thing during the match. McCready won the match by Reyes went on to be the greatest player in the history of the game.

Keith loves Efren he's just being funny..pool needs hundreds of Keith's..Keith is super underated ..the only reason he doesn't win many more tournaments is because he plays every Time Dick n Harry in those bars where he can afford to miss n still win and those bad playing habits follow him around but his best games are pure genius

Agreed! Hendrik Drost Was NOT a foul. Look at the cut and path the 5 ball made. It was more than 90 degrees which is impossible if he hit it first. He hit the 3 ball then it kicked the 5 ball in an actual over cut as it hit the side rail and not the back rail. Imagine that the 3 ball was not even there. If he hit the 5 ball first, it would never take the path that it did. Simple physics.

I feel for Efren in this match. That shot that the referee called a foul on the 3 and the 5, I'm a pool player and I can tell you split hits go to the player so that wasn't a foul.
We're all players here, Curtis, and we all know that in most tournaments that feature *ultimately televised* semis and finals, the customary -- "split hits go the player" -- is never the case: the ref *always* has the final decision. Anything else would result in pandemonium and action-halting delays for cue-ing up and collectively discussing video replays. Occasionally (but very rarely) decision-confirmation is sought from the tournament *director* at the opponent's request.
Did I hear him say McGreedy? As a hustler, I'd bet he'd have fun hearing that.

Strickland is my favorite player to watch play this game but McCready is just about tied with him in that regard. So confident and his table presence is unmatched. Of course Reyes is right up there and I don't believe there is a better player in my lifetime and perhaps of all time.

@Sanctuary: At least half a dozen reasons -- Sheer love of the game; ability to constantly re-enjoy the matches; immense instructive value for myself and pool buddies over the years; increasingly less TV coverage of men’s pool; ability to share best-of-the-best moments and superstar techniques with my local pool students over the years as a volunteer instructor wherever I’ve played. And with the 2005 advent of TH-cam, collectors of classic TV and bygone musical performances have the immensely satisfying joy of sharing what they can with like-minded aficionados worldwide. Also quite pleasurable is that I've heard from a number of the original on-camera pro player themselves (who are now in a "more advanced state of youth") and are relishing the nostalgia of it all, as in "was I ever really that young and that good?"). I love it.
+ray carlton God I miss Grady Matthews' quick wit, humor and commentary. His debates and constant ribbing of, as Grady would call him, *INCARDONE* (Incardona) was always hilarious. I.e. Incardona's Dish Water Stroke Lol!
Actually Grady and all other pool playing friends of his, referred to Incardona as "Cardone" . . . no "IN" before the Cardone.

Yes. Back when pool was fun. Smoke filled pool rooms with bookmakers taking side bets. And you could enjoy an adult beverage. Now you have dorks ordering fruit smoothies and doing push ups in between sets.....

McCreadys back hand grip is so awkward looking, never seen a player hold the back of the cue that way.

He was in "Color of Money" 1986 - notably played a fictional character: an arrogant quintessential hustler-type named "Grady Seasons" -- a composite of several well-known real-life high-stakes road players. Director Martin Scorcese scouted players at a tournament and the moment he saw (and heard) McCready at the table he exclaimed, "There's my hustler -- no question about it!"
As soon as I seen him talking the way he was, I recognized him as the guy that was talking crap to Tom Cruise. He was definitely a good choice for that part in the movie.

26:15 Run the video in .25 speed and you will see that referee was right, it was foul..he hit the no.5 orange ball first.
It wasn't a foul. See cue ball's path after the hits. If you know the physics of the billiard games you know why the three ball hit by the cue ball at first.

sheesh what year was this and how old was efren there lol .............. what impressed me most was the sound of that table and the speed at which it played ......... thoose pockets have a distinct sound ,,,,,,,,,,,, and ohh yeah kieths right wrist man I could never get away with that lol but he makes it work .
Year was 1988 -- Efren was 34 -- match was held about a year and a half after the release of "Color of Money" (discussed during this video match) in which McCready himself had a character role as the quintessential pool hustler "Grady Seasons". (He still receives Actors Guild residual checks 30 years later.) McCready shoots with a sidearm, vernacularly-termed: "Chicken Wing" grip and forearm, not uncommon to fellows who became addicted to the game while still in their single-digit years (because they were still too short to have a floor-perpendicular forearm stroke movement capable of a swing over the approx. 32" rail heights. Sidearm was the only possible way for them to stroke a cue stick.
At 28:05, why did efren have to play from behind the line off a scratch on the break?

that's not a rule, after a scratch you automatically get ball in hand.
I think that is a very old rule. I remember rules like that when I was playing tournaments in the 90's. The rules later kept changing to make the game faster for TV.

no major tournament that I'm aware of has call 9 rules. 9 ball is wild in any pool hall or tournament I've ever been too. it's not 8 ball. it's why it's the money game.
The nine ball always been Wild. If a fluke 9 caused you to lose the match then you were not playing good enough to begin with

McCready contributed a few seconds of "pool shark" phrases, but Mike Sigel was *_chosen personally_* by director Marty Scorsese (and the producer) to be the _COM_ film's *technical director* Mike and fellow player Ewa Mataya Laurance served as technical consultants and shot performers on the film. McCready was good. Efren was good. But Efren's luck was much better.

pitifully Efren Reyes in the last game could not get a break ball if he had not won the championship. McCready does not seem like a good player without technique and skill.
McCready was incredibly successful at conveying for decades exactly the *apparent* shortcomings you and all those who bet against him were *meant to* wrongfully perceive. He was a feared, virtually unbeatable high-stakes money player for likely more years than you've been alive . . . far more than three decades. Even today, few would sensibly bet their own wallet against him.
McCready may shoot the odd wild shot, but that's just because he plays a loose style. If he tried to rein in his technique he would play worse. Efren did get a lot of bad rolls though
The pool cue and the cue ball have no idea how your technique or fundamentals are. The only thing that matters is how you make contact with the two and can you repeat it. Watch Earl Strickland. His technique is not great. But he has one of the best strokes ever and one of the best players ever.

My cue is 40 dollars, sneaky pete. I have had expensive cues, but my SP had won me as many tournaments as my cuetec or McDermott.
I can well relate to that concept, Mike. My first one cost teenage-me $12.00 in 1952. Mosconi's competitors used to joke that *"Willie could run racks on anyone with a broom handle, and do it left-handed."*
@@raycarltonbilliards5798 I wish I could turn time. I met these guys, including Minnesota Fats when I was barely getting into pool, circa early 90s in southern California. I'm actually in an ESPN video sitting right behind one of the women players, unfortunately I can not find the video or remember the women's names. I knew very little of pool. So little that I couldn't understand why people clapped when players missed a shot, coz they were playing safety, a concept that was unknown to me.
Mike: That was almost certainly the *1992 LA Open 9-ball Championship* held in a large Burbank hotel and directed by Jay Helfert, a notable pool tournament director, referee and events promoter. Lived in SoCal at the time and spectated every match of that tourney. Like you, I was on-camera for all the recorded men's and women's matches. Likely visible a few seats away from you on the video you refer to. Jay has all the videos from that event, just as any tournament director would. Directed the '93 repeat also.

Certainly mister keyboard commando. That's very easy to arrange: simply walk up to Efren (or his designated "backer-of-the-moment") and tell him what you "wana" play and for how much. You'll demonstrate your skills for a few matches, then you'll go home broke 95% of the time. Unless you get enough weight to cripple a healthy elephant. Just my opinion.
