    Just starting out in leather as hubby gave it up and there is a ton and a half of the stuff left so not wanting to waste it or dump it I am going to try my hand at leather craft again: have made a few things so far and can do saddle stitch with two needles. Watched several of your videos so far and will keep watching for your no nonsense approach and love the accent too. I am probably not far from you. Have subscribed too.

    Greetings from India,
    Indeed, superb ideas, and how to get much out of scraps--- wealth out of "waste". A wonderful learning experience especially the use of the tool to get the strands for the 4- strand braid and the technic of the braiding. Lastly not to forget the key fob and of course the tasselated book page marker.
    Birlliant demonstration for me as a hobbist. Thank You.

    • @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk
      @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      blkcat1254 it really depends on the split and the suede. If it’s thin then it tears if about 1.8mm. Sometimes it’s ok. As a English style saddle maker most leathers I use are 1.8 and thicker

    You could probably get a few pints for those scraps rather than throwing them away.

    • @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk
      @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The saddlery trade throw away large pieces of leather often. They don't tend to sell them because people want to spend 20 minutes picking through the bits. That twenty minutes is time that could be spent making more money making the saddle.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To overcome that issue just put all the bits of leather in one bag and all the other rubbish in another bag and just sell the bag as is, if it's cheap enough people won't care, let's say you had a bag of scraps that obviously had various sizes in it just put it up for £7.50 if you wanted to you could simply have two bags one with large bits the other with small bits large bits £10 for a bag full small bits £7.50 for a bag, that's a potential £17.50 just on two bags of what you would have thrown away for nothing or had to pay someone to take away.
      Beer money for little work, crafts use the small bits all the time, the larger bits people often do as you did and make lace and other stuff.
      Oh and you wouldn't need to measure each piece just eye ball it and throw it in the bag it's trash right, wrong it's potentially cash your throwing away, just don't get greedy like some of companies do and start charging ridiculous money for what would otherwise be rubbish.

    • @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk
      @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will never get the trade to do this.. It would not be worth the time to list it for sale. I never have much these days. I only make now and then for fun. My days of making 5 or 6 saddles a week are over.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well it's a shame cos the more people get into leather craft as a hobby the more business is generated for the tool makers the leather producers and so on.
      The waste leather that is being thrown away could potentially provide someone with enough to make a small living from, if they are creative enough.
      and even if they don't make a living from it they will have fun learning to make stuff so it is a shame.
      Anyway keep up the good videos.

      Others may, can be difficult to find them. I know both of the UK Tandy store have in-store specials regulary so it's always worth giving them a call, great for odd ball bits.
