this piece is, to me, a perfect example between musical greatness and musical artisanry. One can learn the technique, and that's a major accomplishment for any of us. It's a C5 with a singing melody on top. But how do you write a truly beautiful melody like this? It immediately tells you a story and draws you into another world. A piece of music even the great Bach could not ignore.
I am so glad you posted another lesson / overview ! I really enjoyed the ones you posted during Covid lockdown, and was really waiting for more. Still am ! Being watchful of the harmony unfolding, and finding way to underline it / make it interesting is definitly a big part of playing. Thank you !
Nobody talks about music with more clarity and insight than Prof. Mortensen. His analogies are inspired. Sandwiches, tonality emerging from the fog, cookies etc. No doubt Chopin studied this piece. C.f. Op. 28/4.
cedarvillemusic, с Новым годом! Я как раз сейчас разучиваю это Адажио. Для меня это очень не просто. Я всего лишь 1.5 года, как с нуля начал изучать игру на фортепиано.
Hello Maestro, I have one question if I want to learn to improvise generally and from the 18th/19th century and fugue improvisation, it's this [ historic improvisation, historic improvisation II after furno(courses) and improvising a fugue (book) ] the correct order?
as for what Dr Mortensen said about the piano.....in the classical guitar circle there's this ongoing myth about how Beethoven said of the guitar: "It's an orchestra in miniature!". I always say to these people: "Get out of town....Beethoven would have NEVER said this of the guitar. If he didn't say that even of the piano!". But of course, he and all the great composers treated the piano like an orchestra in miniature. The piano is the ONLY orchestra in miniature. Beethoven would probably have SPAT on the guitar. 😂 The guitar is not idiot proof, it can do harmonically more than, say, the flute. But a LOT less than the piano. An orchestra in miniature? Mr Segovia, shut up....you should have never perpetuated such nonsense.

You are the best piano teacher I have ever come across. I love the forensic approach mixed with analogies and bits of humor.

When you say it's a 'C5...' What does that mean ?
Such a Beautiful piece of music, beautifully extrapolated by Professor Mortensen ❤
Your two-handed treatment of the bass made me think of the Barber Adagio

Yes, although you can do the book and the courses at the same time.

so - would an organ be the ONLY orchestra in full-size plus ... ?

Is it usual to play a baroque piece with so much rubato?
Who decides what is "usual", and on what basis? And what obligation does anyone have to conform to accepted notions of the "usual'?
