My husband got me a 1.02 ct solitaire ring (internally flawless, D on the color grade, excellent cut), and most who asked about my engagement assumed he just “cheaped out” when picking my ring. This is exactly why I don’t really care for expensive jewelry. The diamond itself was about $18k, not including including the platinum ring he had it set in and my wedding band. Of course I’m not going to say, “Well this is worth more than the dingy 3 ct ring your man got you from Kay’s or Jared, so don’t worry about what he can or can’t afford.” I’m just shocked that many people don’t instantly notice the difference. I mean when I got it, I could tell it looked a lot nicer, but I wouldn’t have guessed my little 1 ct engagement ring was worth this much were it not the receipt and the appraisal for insurance. But even without knowing the price, how can people not see the difference from how much cleaner these look?

Don't some cuts inherently appear darker? I sell brilliant cuts only at my store, but I do a lot with vintage pieces, and, for example, vintage European cuts always look darker no matter the diamond quality.

My husband is a jeweler and the funny thing is.....I hardly wear anything other than my silver wedding band with Celtic runes, a marble charm with silver scroll work on the part that hangs from the leather necklace, and my silver Deathly Hallows pendant and chain (from Harry Potter) that he made for me. That's it. I forget to put in earrings and those are all costume jewelry on surgical steel posts or wire because I tend to lose things. Why spend a lot of money on something I probably won't think to wear, or just lose one of them. I certainly don't look the part of a jeweler's wife, that's for certain lol. Of course he just works there doing what he likes to call "small scale welding". He is a top rated craftsman with people sending him stuff from all over the country to be repaired or sized etc. It pays the bills but just barely. The store he works in is Michael's Jewelry in North Wilkesboro, NC. Small Town in Western NC between Winston Salem and Boone. Sports fans would recognize them as the home to Appalachian State University and Wake Forrest University. Sorry, letting my pride show a bit there. Blessed Be....
