I really don’t understand why Beryl isn’t consistently at the top of every one of these ‘all time great’ lists GCN and the like put out. Not only for her incredible dominance (which would be enough by itself) but for being so strong despite the almost total lack of support for female cycling at the time. To be on par with (maybe even better than) Merckx in terms of superiority over her rivals, beating even elite men on occasion, with a career three times longer than Merckx, and as a true amateur working a day job and going through pregnancy, childbirth and parenting..! Unfathomable, the greatest outlier in sports statistics. She was the first and last of her kind, the finest cyclist that ever pushed a pedal if you ask me.
I saw an excellent play about Beryl Burton at the Leeds Playhouse written by the actor Maxine Peake. It was on when the 2014 Tour de France came to Yorkshire. It is about time someone made it into a docudrama about her life.
I cycled with Beryl and Morley club when I was 14 and was inspired greatly by this superwoman. I am now 66 and often tell my friends of my precious early years and great memories of Beryl Charlie and Nim Carline. If she had have been here for the 2012 Olympics Penndleton and Mears would have come second and third !! Great days then and great memories !!
Completely agree, the 'peril' would see off all-comers in modern day cycling, road or track just as she did in her day. Her records and achievements plus longevity are astounding and are massively undervalued/underplayed in the cycling world, she's the greatest ever in my humble opinion, a goddess amongst mortals.
as an American kid in the 60s and 70s interested in cycling the news of this woman half a world away and only occasionally mentioned in print always seemed fictional. How could it be? She was like a religious icon. A precious story of mythology. What a pleasure it must have been to know her.
Fantastic stuff, I remember as a youth being burned off by "The Peril", I find it amazing how the media lauds the current women cyclists, but THIS was the GREATEST woman cyclist who we have ever seen, and one of the greats if you include men! Brilliant cine
Greatest cyclist ever, considering the restrictions for ladies (no olympics/shorterned road races etc), considering her titles across all disciplines and the incredible records over all distances and that she was an amateur and a mum, her achievements are beyond comparison IMHO.
a truly fantastic rider and great person that i saw and talked to many times when a schoolboy in the mid 70's. her 12hr record set in 1967 i think was legendary and stood for 50 years !!!. while i never got anywhere near her times on the boro in 25's and 50's (not many of us did), i once posted a better time than her when i was 16 on an early season hilly 18 mile TT round the golden acre circuit as she wasn't known as a great climber - i thought i'd made it then lol.

Merckx himself said Beryl was 'the boss of us all'

Take note! When she rides, her right hand is in the drop and left hand is further down the bar on the straight bit 😊😊😊😊
My great aunt 💜💜💜

she set a 12 hour cycling record greater than the mens record the only woman to beat a mens record in any event .
My bikes is named in her honour
It is PAL but not region locked so you would have no problem with the video.
Evelyn Hamilton should be remembered also.
her position looks amazing. extremely flat.
