    Nice job. Boy, the way you (and others) dive into those ratchets fearlessly makes me envious. I'm so afraid of ruining the wrench. Thanks for posting. Watching videos like this help.

    Thanks 357magdad. I now have a repaired and fully functional Snap-on 71-N 1/2" ratchet. It broke the year before last when one of the teeth broke off the ratchet gear while I was trying to remove a forklift wheel. I called Snap-on's customer service after watching your video and had a very pleasant conversation with Reo about my broken vintage model E (1944) ratchet and he sent me the same repair kit you received-at no charge. Although the new ratchet gear had more/finer teeth, it fit and works perfectly. I also installed the new ratchet selector pawl and spring with integrated pivot head (I did not need to use the new screws-LOL). Thank you for posting this video of yours as it woke me up to repairing my ratchet which was my dad's from when he had a repair garage in Oakland, CA after he returned from fighting in WWII. And thank you Snap-on.

    That is a sweet old ratchet! I bought a 1949 version (round handle, same head) out of the used junk pile on a SO truck for $15. The dealer said it was WW2 so not covered by warranty. When I pointed out that the war ended in 1945 he promptly put a new kit in it, and I still love using it 20 years later!

    Great cleanup of a fine old ratchet. Good for another 100 years. That was good thinking about contacting Snap On for replacement screw . I probably would have tried the local hardware store then been frustrated when they didn't have the right screw. Regarding the cadmium plating, I have some old wrenches that say "wartime finish" and are also thinner than normal. But they are very serviceable.

    Never have been much for Snap on but I liked that one it turned out nice. The price tag usually gets me. I have been watching a lot of people that swear by Snap on. They do look like good tools. Wish I could find some that needed a little help. You always amaze me with what you find. Me and my my son went to 3 flea markets over the weekend and didn't find much of anything. Now if you wanted dishs you had it made. Thanks

      I know what you mean Glen - flea markets can be hit or miss. Sometimes there is only a few vendors with old tools - and they want ebay money for them! I usually do better at yard sales, but it is a lot more driving around.

    Nice job! I love cleaning up old ratchets. I don’t like using super Lube because it gets rid of that great ratcheting sound. I use a light oil like 3in1, which is what I think they intended to be used because of the oiling port. I personally use Motorkote Hyper Lube.

    Do you have an untrasonic cleaner? I can’t live without it cleaning old tools. Gets grease and grime out that a heavy hand cleaning just doesn’t. After you’re all done with everything on a tool it gets the flitz out of all the cracks and lettering. I got a cheap Amazon one and use dollar store degreaser in it.

      Ryan, which ult. cleaner did youbuy?

    • @Ryan-lz8zm
      @Ryan-lz8zm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnmclaurin don’t get the one I got because they just raised the price to 51, I paid $34. But it’s the gtsonic 750ml model and it’s too small. I’m looking to get a 2liter or bigger like the harbor freight model which is also heated. It’s $89 but goes on sale a lot.
      Little tip, clean things in glass mason jars. You put the detergent and hot water in a jar and set it in the UScleaner and then add water to the cleaner to the fill level. That way when you’re done you just dump the water out and your ultrasonic cleaner is spotless. Much easier to clean mason jars. Glass works better than plastic for the vibration. But it lets you clean multiple things in different cleaners without changing the water in the ultrasonic cleaner.

    Nice work. Is there a contact at Snap-on to research parts? I picked up a 71-10 ratchet at a sale and it is missing the thumb lever. Inside isn't smooth, either. Haven't opened it yet.

    I just picked one of these up this morning at my local flea market for $5. The selector is broken and it is also missing a screw. Do you know if the selector in the kit was the same as the original?

    • @357magdad

      I think the kit they sent me was for a newer ratchet. The only part I was able to use was the screws. Give the folks at Snap-on a call, they are super helpful.
