In the original script, he was supposed to walk away after getting slapped. It was Poitier who insisted he strike back and they rewrote the scene. Iconic.
I also want to give credit to the actor playing Endicott. He was so rattled by Tibbs striking back that he broke down in tears. Excellent.

Logged in here to pay my respects. As a black kid going to a school in a racist part of London, this one slap by Virgil Tibbs truly left a lifelong impression on me. It was a deeply symbolic scene, for me and for non-white people worldwide! Endicott's sobs surely reflect his pain at realising that the days when black people "knew their place" were on their way out. What a classy, elegant, almost regal, figure Mr Poitier was. CLASSIC Film. One of my all time favorites. There is a moment at the 3:47 mark of this scene that is very subtle yet very POWERFUL. Immediately after 'the slap' Endicott says "There was a time when I could have had you shot" Watch closely Sidney Poitier as Virgil Tibbs with a combination great look as he ever so slightly 'rolls his shoulders' before exiting the scene. It speaks volumes as to the nature of his character. I have a hard time believing that 'shoulder roll' was written in the script. More believable as to the brilliance and imagination of the actor. God, he was good. FOREVER Grateful for the artistry of this man. Rest in Peace, Sidney Poitier. And Thanks.

I just re-watched the film last night, and this is the most powerful scene in the movie. Of course, Sidney Portier was powerful in the starring role, but Larry Gates as Eric Endicott was equally terrific in this scene. How Endicott seems friendly and is soft spoken at first, even offering lemonade, but soon you realize he is deeply infested with racism that oozes out of every pore of his soul... great performance of all the actors, rightfully iconic scene from a classic movie.

That pained look on Endicott's face at the end of the scene is what every white supremacist feels any time one of his or her privileges is rebuked. A soul deep pain. THAT is the part of the scene that is seared into me.

Perfect technique 👏🏽👏🏽

In this movie Sidney Poitier gave me what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and Nelson Mandela gave me growing up. That is hope. Plus pride. I smile when Poitier as Mr. Tibbs slapped Endicott back. I thought he was the bravest black man in the world.

A troll in the comments said we should Google how much the former president helped blacks in America, so I did. I read everything Google said. It turns out the former president was a master at having a photo opportunity with a group of people such as blacks, and saying that he was putting into place some thing that would really help their community. Did you ever ask yourself why there was no outcry or grumbling from Republicans in Congress when he did things like that? It was because they knew that he regularly went in later privately and rescinded what he had done in public in the photo op. Read what Google has to say about his record. Just read the entire thing.

Because it was the first one.
It was the proof that the privilege he loved was slipping away.. he had seen it happen in other ways but it had never touched him (literally) until that moment.
Now the whole foundation of his life is gone.
      And even Henry saw it!!!
