I have been to Japan a couple of times and I can't get enough of it. The mixture of modern and traditional is like in no other place. The food is amazing and the people are so polite. On top of it it is probably the safest country for women I have been to so far. Safer than the US of course and Australia. Probably much safer than the UK and Europe in general.
Definitely statistically safer than any Western country. Most of East and Southeast Asia is safe for women to walk around at anytime alone. South Asia not so much, lots of gang rapes there, but for men it's perfectly safe.
