作品以樸素的、民歌式的旋律為主題原型，發展成十五個變奏，並將這十五個變奏劃分成三個樂章，成為一個變奏組曲，表現人的某些情感、心境及思想。共分為三個樂章，主題選用南方民間小調加以變化而成。第一樂章表現思念、幻想、愛及稍許哀傷的情感；第二樂章主要表現活潑、欣喜、歡快的情緒；第三樂章主要表現激昂、奮起和抒情的意境，中間部份穿插了幽默、風趣的音樂作為對比。
總體上看，這部作品不僅求新求異，還注重音樂美感，旨在雅俗共賞。

This composition is composed of 3 movements. Thematically, the material is extracted from a folk song in South China. Yearning, fantasy, love, and subtle grief are expressed in the first one. However, there are significant expressions, such as vivacity, rejoicing, and happiness, in the second movement. The duration in the third variation is the longest, for there are various feelings shown within, including passion, rouse, and lyric ones, with which some scherzando, humorous sections can be heard as a kind of contrast.
Overall, not only did the composer seek new and unique, but he particularly put emphasis on its aesthetic sentiments in the piece.
