@TSnintendogamer true, but had far less competition. The GC faced against the greatest selling console of all time, as well as Microsoft's online innovative Xbox. Back when the n64's competition was just the Panasonic 3do, atari jaguar, and sega Saturn, Nintendo could afford to mess up and stay different(cartridges, 80$ games etc. ) 6th gen showed them they needed to change
@TSnintendogamer The Dreamcast failed bro. Xbox was the one that made it popular. I didn't even know anyone that played online back then. 360/Ps3 era is where online actually was big.

The blue man was actually James Cameron. That day a fetish was born in his loins that would only be satisfied with the release of the stunningly average 'Avatar', or, as Cameron insisted on calling it: 'My Personal Wank Bank'.
Cartridges weren't unreliable. In fact they were far more reliable than the scratch prone CDs of the era. The reason they sucked was because they were expensive, difficult to produce/code for and couldn't store nearly as much data as CDs. CDs were superior in all ways *except* reliability, although the main reason Nintendo chose cartridges over CDs was because it made piracy more difficult. Also, Perfect Dark is superior to Goldeneye. Come at me.
This. Cartridges had plenty of drawbacks, but reliability certainly isn't one of them. They were also way faster than CDs, leading to practically non-existent loading times.
@@jacobskarda I mean, it's Nintendo. All they have to survive is their IP. No other gaming company has as iconic of characters as Mario or Zelda games. Also yes. Perfect Dark is a "perfection " of Golden Eye. It is therefore better.
The GameCube had one of their strongest line-ups of games ever. It was the golden age of Metroid. It was the second most powerful console of a generation that had _four_ major consoles. It had one of the best controller designs to date. And... they still managed to fuck it up. The GameCube is just a sad situation.
Why they didn’t include a shoulder button on the left side of the controller and only on the right was beyond me and made some games much more complicated then the other systems. It’s also a shame they decided not to use DVDs as that what really hindered the GameCube

Proud of the countless times my parents placed the top game on my Christmas list under the tree, knowing that I would be surprised and spend a happy Christmas that day. Proud of being a kid and everything that surrounds it. You didn't stare at a screen in those days like today. It's not the same as kids with a tablet all day. It was different. @@prico3358 I grew up with Atari as my first console in the 80s, and through the years ive come to see that, although different than tablets and TH-cam based stuff, it's all really the same thing, just getting better imo. Virtual reality will take over, like in the movie Ready Player one, and than if the world makes it far enough, where we walk, talk and eat on the streets will make it an absolute NECESSITY to live with on our heads, and will totally blind us. They are taking what makes rich people's lives the best (convenience), and making it seem like we have something, when really we dont have squat. Seriously I can see the Matrix becoming a real thing. What rich people have that we dont is the ability to purchase life longevity and safety (while it lasts). We're being weeded out, whether on accident or on purpose.
Honestly it's the same thing that killed the N64. They used proprietary media (which held far less data) for the games instead of standard discs because they were TERRIFIED of piracy. That's why the N64 got blown out of the water and lost franchises like Final Fantasy, and it is so hard to understand why they didn't learn their lesson with the GameCube. Great video as usual!
Wait I thought the N64 using cartridges was because of Nintendo holding stakes in a company that supplied the materials to make cartridges, or is that one of those rumors that got debunked?
But wait there is more! Nintendo is taking down sites with old ROMs BUT they haven't come up with an idea to sell the ROMs themselves. This is so stupid. Nintendo is so scared of Piracy but not scared of shooting themselves in the leg, dick and head.
The Gamecube will always have a soft place in my heart, I got mine in 2006 after playing the Simpson's Hit and Run at a babysitter's house, this is also the same place where I played Grand Theft Auto III at age 5 that same year but that's besides the point. When I got home after being completely obsessed with the cute graphics, fun controller and gameplay of GTA meets Homer Simpson, I pleaded to my mother to get me one, and after a trip to an EB Games, she came back with a new GameCube console, controller, some games including Donkey Kong Jungle beat and it's Bongos, MarioParty 4, 5, 6, 7, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Old Door, Sonic Mega Collection (The game that made me into a Sonic Fan along with Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis on the GBA), and The Simpson's Hit and Run... I was so happy. I since got other games for it like Sonic Adventure DX, Crazy Taxi, and Mario Kart Double Dash. We got our Wii in 2007 and the party continued, just add in Wii sports.
Slight correction: the adaptor that let you use a physical GBA as a secondary controller/screen plugged into a controller port. The high speed port at the bottom was for a different addon that let you play GBA games on your TV through the Gamecube.

When the ps1 was released in late 1994. It would be a full 2 years until dvd became a consumer product. With its 1000 dollar players and 100 dollar movies. Most would not have a DVD player until the launch of the ps2 in 2000. This is what helped sell the ps2.
I had a GameCube back then, my buddy had one as well. We played Melee for days, and it was glorious. I had some of the best game experiences ever on that console. Metroid Prime and F-Zero GX are, and will forever be, some of the greatest games ever made. In fact, more than ten years later I decided to finally finish the story mode in GX (never got past the fourth chapter on normal difficulty as a kid) and played it on an emulator. It felt just as great, maybe even better. Once you finish the story mode on very hard, you'll have memories of victory that stick with you for a long time. Thanks, Gamecube. We had an awesome time.

I have to wonder what a difference just the simple strategy of advertising the silver (what they called “platinum”) console as the default color instead of the indigo one (which people thought was purple) would have made. The silver console simply looked so much more futuristic and “general appeal” to me than the purple one. Also, how did this video COMPLETELY neglect to mention REmake, RE0 and Killer 7 as prime examples of “adult” games.....???
I'm pleased you talked about Eternal Darkness. That's one of the few games I've owned that I played to death; going through all three color options, and the fourth that opens up after you complete the main three. I admit I fell for the crashing screen the first time it happened. I wish Silicon Knights hadn't imploded so that there could have been a reboot/remake/remaster at some point on a newer system. Ah well.
That "crashing screen" was a complete ripoff of Metal Gear Solid 2, which was released nearly a half-year before that, when a character in the game literally told you that "You've been playing for a long time. Don't you have anything better to do with your time?" It's so blatant I can't believe no one got sued over it. They even pulled the same trick on Metal Gear Solid for the original Playstation...3 years earlier...Eternal Darkness, have you no shame ripping off Hideo Kojima?

Regardless of the Dreamcast's commercial failure, it still was the greatest, and most innovative console of it's era. To this day, homebrew games are being developed for it. Sega had the bollocks, Nintendo wish it had. Sega still dominates the arcades.
I still remember when I walked into best buy looking for gamecube games, asked the guy where they where, and he said "next gen has kind of killed it, we don't carry them anymore" behind a large array of PS2 games still carried and I knew god was dead
Yeah I remember as a kid when Gamecube games started disappearing from shelves too. There was literally one game shop in the middle of the city that still stocked them and on the few times I year my parents went in there it felt like a pilgrimage to Mecca to be able to visit it.
I had one back in the day. I actually only bought it because it was cheap, but the 12 year old me came to love games like Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Super Smash Bros, Die Hard Vendetta and even that jetski game. Those were fun times and I do miss that old thing. Too bad Nintendo couldn't capitalize on the strengths of Gamecube.

@@OrdinaryThings I think most modern gamers would hate it, since the combat is super shallow. Basically you just hold down the attack button and you throw an infinite number of projectiles to mow down hordes of enemies. Plus the game looks awful visually, being a remake/remaster of a PS1/N64 game (with literally DOUBLE the content) but with barely upgraded visuals. But where the game really shines is the exploration and puzzle aspect. Each of the levels has stuff like hidden paths, breakable walls, hidden treasure, etc. Plus I mean, even though the combat is shallow and simple, it's also super fun! Would recommend checking it out. @2005 Cool Year Lol so anyone who disagrees with you is a fanboy who bashes your favorite game? Gotcha. I didn't say that Mario Galaxy was a bad game, but it's not the best 3D one. At least Sunshine innovated it's gameplay by designing it's mechanic around the game design, instead of the other way around like Galaxy did. I always felt like Galaxy would have been an amazing game if it hadn't been released on the Wii, that way the game would not have had those lame ass tacked on motion controls that didn't add anything to the game, which is why it feels more like a "Mario-lite" because everything is chopped up into smaller levels instead of bigger areas to explore. Mario Odyssey is the game that Mario Galaxy should have been, and it would have been an amazing game like that if it hadn't been released on the Wii. That is the reason why I haven't bothered with Mario Galaxy again because it was never that good of a game to begin with, and everyone else I know who bought the collection felt the same way, but don't let that stop you from enjoying the "best" 3D Mario game, kid.

Why do people keep talking like online gaming was a big deal back then? Lol
@TSnintendogamer The Dreamcast failed bro. Xbox was the one that made it popular.
I didn't even know anyone that played online back then. 360/Ps3 era is where online actually was big.

The DVD function was a massive seller in the west too
Snes was blueray
I had a GameCube back then, my buddy had one as well. We played Melee for days, and it was glorious. I had some of the best game experiences ever on that console. Metroid Prime and F-Zero GX are, and will forever be, some of the greatest games ever made.
In fact, more than ten years later I decided to finally finish the story mode in GX (never got past the fourth chapter on normal difficulty as a kid) and played it on an emulator. I have to wonder what a difference just the simple strategy of advertising the silver (what they called “platinum”) console as the default color instead of the indigo one (which people thought was purple) would have made.
