UPDATE TO POWER CONSUMPTION: There was an error I made in the editing of the video, The VL 45 pulled 0.828 KWhr total over the duration of testing. Converting .828kWh into Amp hours at 12 volts = 69amp hours / 96 hours of total running of the fridge = .71 amp hours per hour at 70 degrees ambient. If the temps are higher you get more power draw, especially at temps about 90 degrees. Sorry for the confusion!
Saw the KWhr stat just now and I had to shake my head for a second. Uses as much in 96 hours as the average American Household in a month! lol Easy mistake. Thanks for the video on this fridge. Looks like a nice piece of kit to have.
You basically just calculated watt-hours (Wh) with that 8.63. I actually find Wh to make more sense for low energy appliances like these. That said, 8.6 Wh is very reasonable power consumption.
I don't like the latches on the particular Iceco you reviewed, but a JP30 might work well for me.

Just to add another note these fridge and freezers have been very very reliable as for mentioned I use it in my camper van and go off-road a lot they can handle up to a 40° angle with no problem so you can use them even in boats they're built very well I have had to deal with the customer service with iceco and have found them to be immensely helpful absolutely professional and it was a pleasure working with them I would recommend this ice Co fridge freezer to anybody looking for something to use for either on or off grid use I will I will recommend them over dometic any day

The red cover on the 12 volt plug covers up the DIN connector that plugs into a DIN receptacle. The DIN receptacle is also used on BMW motorcycles as the Powerlet connector. The receptacle springs over the positive terminal catching it in the groove that is visible near the tip. This prevents it from shaking loose. It is a much better receptacle than the US style cigarette receptacle in high vibration applications. This also explains the heavy spring rate of the positive terminal, ensuring that it is stiff enough to lock into the DIN receptacle. The DIN receptacle and plug are rated to 12 amps and used for both 12 volt and 24 volt systems.

@@Jasonoid I had the fridge staged in my living room to keep drinks cold until the wiring for the solar was done in my van. Now that the wiring is done, my ICECO has a new home in my van. It works very well in the Florida heat. I will soon build an insulated cabinet for it so it doesn't have to work hard. (I remember to leave room for air movement around the vents.) The cabinet will also serve as a seat.

Not superb I bought one of these nowhere in the brochure or description with the literature included with the fridge didn't mention what the USB ports are for. And you completely ignored mentioning what the intended purposes are for are they inputs or outputs can you hook up a solar panel directly?

I have two of the iceco a vl45 and the vl65d dual zone fridge and freezer and I love them both the 45 chest I use as a freezer at home and the 65 vld dual zone fridge freezer I run 24/7 in my camper van that I built with my grandson it has a 365 watt single panel mono crystal solar panel the renogy 40 amp mppt charge controller and 414 amp hours of lithium battery Bank and I love these fridge and freezers
I'm debating between vl45, vl60 single, or vl60dual however I'm not sure what fits me best. What do you recommend for someone that goes weekends to 5-6 days offroading/camping? One reason I want the vl60 dual is to split the freezer to store icecream :) however the size might be too big for my Lexus gx470.. but I'm not sure if that's too large and the vl45 too small. Any advice would be great!

under 10 watts continuous would be very nice for a low budget tiny offgrid cabin running off 1000 watt hours of lithium and a 300 Watt solar panel in sunny place like Florida.
I fixed the problem with that red 12v factory cigarette plug! I unscrewed it and there is no spring at all but V shaped stiff metal, the metallic pin is to long for any cigarette socket and once I opened it I shorted the pin for 2mm by using sandpaper and now the whole thing can click into cigarette socked without getting pushed out. Also what I noticed the pin is made of brass and coated with metallic coat, before grinding the pin would feel very hot to the touch wasting energy on heat but now with brass in the pin exposed and making connection that problem has been resolved too, so yeah just grind off the angled pointed 2mm on top of the pin and you will solve 2 problems at once.

Thanks for an excellent video. After a lot of research, your video sealed the deal. Note: The compressor is made by Danfoss - a very reliable manufacturer of HVAC equipment. I've used their devices for decades without issues.
As an old HVAC guy, I have to correct a pet peeve of mine: Refrigeration technically does not "make cold", it REMOVES HEAT from a place where it is not wanted to a place where it is not objectionable. The fan you mentioned is blowing the heat removed from the evaporator outside. Not to worry, how you put it does not detract from your otherwise excellent video. I really appreciate your detailed power usage, but I disagree with your final number of over 800 KWh for 96 hours of use. That would be over $160 of power at average power prices! I think you mean 800+ Watt hours (Wh). That is something you may want to correct in your video. BTW, that is remarkably good efficiency, and what convinced me to get this unit. Thanks to your video, I know it is what I want!

UPDATE: I just received my ICECO VL45 today. I was very fortunate that mine was delivered in PRISTINE CONDITION! Not just ICECO, but many 12V cooler manufacturers have had issues with the carriers (UPS & FedEx) mishandling their product. Some people have their coolers arrive with dents and dings. It isn't a manufacturer problem. It is a carrier problem with the handling. I have read these on-line reviews all over the web. Another reason (besides this video) that I elected to go with ICECO is that many reviews raved about how good ICECO customer service is. I figure if I am going to put out a big chunk of money for a cooler, I want great customer service too.
I plugged this cooler into my home outlet. It is very easy to understand the functions and operations. My thermostat reached 34 degrees from 74 degrees in 35 minutes. I have a celebratory beer chilling in it right now. I can't wait til the wiring in my van is done so I can run this off my solar and lithium batteries. My VL45 was delivered Saturday and I found it standing on its side even though the package clearly said Fragile, This Side Up. Fortunately, it had only been sitting there for 20 minutes at most because I'd recently come in from walking the dog and it wasn't there. I was hopeful that the package had been shipped right side up until the delivery guy put it on its side. I brought the box into the house, put it down right side up and let it sit for almost 24 hours before I unboxed it and hooked it up. It seems fine, runs quietly when it cycles on at the minimum compressor speed and appears to be very efficient.
I've had the VL45 hooked up to a new Jackery 1000 Pro (which was charged to 100%, then unplugged) portable power generator. I cooled the Iceco down to 38 degrees on a wall plug, then plugged it into the Jackery, put 13 half liter bottles of cold water in, and set the Iceco temperature to 34 degrees. The Iceco has been running off the Jackery for over 21 hours now in my kitchen with an ambient temperature of 71 degrees, and the Jackery is at a 63% charge level. I don't want to run the Jackery all the way down to zero charge because that shortens the battery life, but it looks like the Jackery can run the VL45 for about 2 days in these conditions and still have a little bit of charge left.
My plan is to use the Jackery and the VL45 on extended camping trips in my Toyota 4Runner. I'll run the VL45 off the 400V AC outlet in the back of the vehicle when I'm driving and plug it into the Jackery when the 4Runner is sitting. Every 2 or 3 days I'll recharge the Jackery on the vehicle AC outlet while the refrigerator is plugged into the Jackery. The Jackery will fully recharge in less than 2 hours without anything plugged in, so it should only take a few minutes more with the refrigerator drawing a little energy. From what I've read, you don't want to keep portable power units charged to 100% all the time and use them for pass through charging any more than necessary because it shortens the battery life.

@@Jasonoid I talked with a guy that has both and he said he likes the VL better. He thought it was more sturdy. Handles, hinges etc were better on the VL. The only advantage of the new one was the lid that opened either way.
@@readyme I feel they are both the same amount of sturdiness. One thing that's nice is the VL60Pro has much better dimensions than the VL60 normal one. The VL60 standard is really tall and skinny, the VLpro is wider and deeper. For the price I think I will recommend people stay with the VL series and wait for the VLpros to drop in price. I bet they will because I don't see anyone spending $700 for the VLPro 45 when they can get the VL45 for $520...plus with my discount code even cheaper.

Thanks for your video. I have a question how do I change the temperature read out from Celsius to Fahrenheit?
How does the ICECO VL45 compare to the ICECO iCOOLER, as to the wall and lid thickness insulation value goes? I like the full lid opening and vintage style of the VL45 but also like the drain plug, sealed inner lining of the yeti style of the iCOOLER.
They use the same compressor so they should be around the same efficiency. The VL45 has slightly thicker walls and lid so will do better with freezing temps. The VL45 also has slightly more room. The JPC42 is tougher and won't dent because it's rotomolded plastic. I think it comes down to personal preference. You can't go wrong with either. My 15% discount code will only work for the VL45, the JPC42 came out after my discount code was created so it isn't valid for that model.

Thanks for this review! I only wish I had found it a couple of days ago. I purchased a 53qt Rockpals 12v fridge online through Walmart (cheapest price) and it's due to be delivered in a few days. I think I'll see if I can return it as I'd much prefer this Iceco model, even at $150 more
I had Rockpals send me out a fridge for review last year. It did so bad I didn't even make a video on it. It could have been a dud of a unit though. You may have a good experience with yours.

Sorry for the delay, somehow missed this comment. The larger compartment measures 14 inches wide and 10 inches deep.
Keep in mind that many 12 volt plugs contain internal fuses. For safety add an inline fuse to your new cable.
All ICECO fridges have a built in fuse right in the connector port, and all the battery boxes I use have a fuse. No fuse needed in the power cable.

Good review! I have a couple of questions about your power usage slide. Am I correct to presume that you meant total watt-hours used, and not kilowatt-hours used? Also, I presume the duty cycle was 16 hours running and 80 off, and not minutes.
Finally, how level do these units have to be? My basement 120v chest freezer said to let it sit 24 hours after tilting it. I am hoping that a unit meant to be portable does not have these restrictions.
Watt hours is probably the right term.
The compressor duty cycle varies per temperature outside, but the compressor in my testing at 70`F would run for 16 minutes, and then it would sit idle for 80 minutes and they cycle back on again for another 16 minutes. Very good performance. Not hours.
I believe you can tilt these units up to 30 degrees without issues.

Which anderson outlet did you use on the box? I won't be using a power box like yours, but I have multi 12v outlet in the back of my Jeep where I'll plug in the fridge.

I would actually advise on either the VL45 or the TR60. I have reviews of both those fridges on my channel so I would suggest you watch both of those videos to compare them. The VL45 is heavy and tough. The TR-60 has much more capacity and is around the same efficient but weighs a little less. They both have the same compressor and are SOLID buys. Couldn't go wrong with either. I don't quite like the JP42 as much because it is heavy and has the least capacity. It sure is a tank though! I have the iceco JP40, which is basically the same thing as the indel b 40. How do you think this compares to the vl4
The ICECO JP40 / IndelB 40 are very good. The have Secop compressors. The temperature swings a little bit more on the IndelB meaning that it goes higher before the compresser turns back on (at least the one we tested). The main benefit to the VL45 is you have one large 'chest fridge' area and not two with a divider. It's also more insulated. You can't go wrong with either one.
Do you have any insight as to how to mount it using the bottom mounting plate?
I haven't used any mounting system for these fridges. I know ICECO makes a sliding drawer system. Not sure what documentation comes with it. I think it does have screw holes on the bottom of the fridge.
I’m looking for a mini freezer to use in my home that’s frost-free so I don’t have to manually defrost. I’m looking to keep it running continuously plugged in. These portable fridge/freezers are the only ones I’ve found that are auto-defrost in this size. Are there any drawbacks to using this as a continuously running mini-freezer in my home that I’m overlooking?
These do not support auto defrosting so if you live in a humid environment you'll get ice buildup in freezer mode and water in fridge mode. I'm not sure if there's a 12v fridge with a defrost feature.
is the VL series more insulated than the VL Pro S series?
Greats videos. I’ve been researching a lot and am trying to decide between this VL 45 and the 3 in 1 iceco ice chest. For a 2010 Honda Accord, camping for 4 days straight in Utah. Any pointers? I’m wondering which has better insulation/is better on power usage since I’ll be using the car battery. Thanks so much!
I live in Utah, hope you enjoy your trip here! The VL45 is more efficient due to more insulation. The VL45 is also a little larger. Id recommend that one and it's on sale on their website currently. As for tips, take a volt meter with you and don't let the voltage drop below 12volts on your battery when the fridge is off. When it drops around that level run your car for 15 to 20 minutes to charge the battery. Usually it needs to run once in the morning and once at night depending on how large the battery is. My accord came with the smallest battery in the world and I swapped it out for a bigger one (I have a video for that project on my channel). If you park in the shade and keep the car Temps as cool as possible the fridge will run much less. You can crack the windows as well to keep it cooler. If the car is too hot the fridge will run constantly and your battery will run down faster.

I'm thinking of buying this one, but what's the pro or con of the JP42? I would plug into my bluetti for camping . I cannot lift either one, but with 2 of us at each handle, it's doeable.
The VL45 is more efficient, the jpc42 is more durable /water proof inside. They both are great fridges! I would chose either of them
Hello, I just bought one of these coolers, question, I have a diesel with 2 batteries as most diesels have, how long do you think I can safely run this 12v with engine off b4 I have issues with starting. Thanks.
Hey Dave! It's always best to run your fridge off a separate battery so you never leave yourself stranded, but since you have two batteries, you could probably get through a night just fine. Vehicle batteries usually have 30 to 40 amp hours of usable capacity.
I have a truck that has a 110v receptical. Just wondering how that could be better than the 12v plug you mentioned?
Hey Mark, you should be able to run the fridge off your built in inverter, however that usually shuts off when the engine is turned off or the key is removed so you'll want to have a back up power in place when you are running your engine.
Have you noticed the temperature fluctuate on your vl45? Mine is rarely at the set temperature. For example, right now I have it set to 36 degrees fahrenheit but the current temp it displays is 30. Is that normal?
The temps get much more constant when food is in the fridge. The more empty the fridge is the more the temps will fluctuate. I'm not worried too much when the temps are lower than the display, the bigger issue is when the temps are above and your food goes bad.
where does condensation go if it drips to the bottom of the fridge? there are cracks..so i don't think it would pool...
I wonder would this fridge work well for a sail boat..With the motions of the ocean? What do you think?
Should be fine for sailing. I've had others mention they use it in their boats. I've used mine in a slow off roading trail multiple times and haven't had issues. Now bouncing around and not having it tied down would probably cause damage.

Turn on the fridge by pressing the power button. Then press and hold the 'settings button' & and the 'negative button' at the same time for 3 seconds to toggle between the temperature values of Celsius & Fahrenheit.
I think it also mentions this process in the owners manual.

Isn't there a good working 12v socket I can buy that works with no sautering and tinkering? If I am spending over $400 I want it ready to go ac or dc.
You will probably be okay with the stock cable, you just need to be mindful it can come out. In the video description you will find the "better" cables. With some simple soldering you can make the changes.
I'm having trouble running on 12 volts on 110 it works great wont cool below 60 degrees on 12 volt..

I get the E1 and E3 errors with mine on 12V but it works great on 110 as well. I’ve been in touch with them and I’ve even ordered the 12V step up to 13.9V plug that they make to help stabilize it and that didn’t work either. Im afraid I now have to send it back.

I have not seen a Blizzardbox Cooler in person. If the quality and price is right you might want to try it. The best fridge I have tested is the ICECO VL series.

I would make the new 12v connection for the fridge. The one comes with the fridge is junk. soon or later it will fail.
I would make a new cable with 10 gauge, solder the connector to the plug on the fridge. other end would be the anderson connector like you have in the video, other bolt direct to the battery. Voltage wont drop and causing the fridge motor wont loose any voltage.
Sounds like a great plan! I don't have any issues with 12 awg landscape cable, hardly any voltage drop. 10awg would work great too.
Is the lid strong enough to sit on as a seat? Or even to stand on?
I sit on it on occasion but standing isn't probably the best idea. Its a durable fridge. It depends how much you weigh.
Ok. I need an opinion please. Lv45 or the 3 in 1? Other than the built in ac adapter, is there any other reason to opt for the lv? I mean, it doesn't have a drain and the insulation properties are probably comparable, yes?
VL series is more insulated, better efficiency. The 3 in 1 is more durable/ tougher. If you plan to have your fridge in the sun at all, the white 3 in 1 will perform the best. You always want to shade these fridges when possible though.
They both have similar storage space. You cant go wrong with either one in my opinion.

Great video! I’ve decided on the VL45 because of your videos (and your father in law). Would your battery setup keep the VL45 going with a 100w solar panel and average sunlight? I’m in Virginia I expect 80°-90° weather during my trip. I was thinking about building a battery box like yours, probably with a lithium battery.
Great choice Fredi, the VL45 is such a tank! You'd get great run times off a 100 watt solar panel, 100ah LiFePO4 battery and a charge controller. Would be an excellent setup. Check out this charge since you could charge the battery off your car and the solar panel!

This is a year old video but I'm just now getting into these 12v fridge. I have a question. How would you compare this VL45 to the JP40 or even JP50?? Currently, there are Prime day sales. I'd torn between the Vl45, jp40 and jp45! Doubt I will see a reply on time but I guess it's worth a shot.

I don't like the divider on the JP series, its wasted space since that area on the shelf in the divider is 15 degrees warmer. I like the rugged and efficiency of the VL45 more.

You make an interesting point. The inside of this printer is aluminum, it's not magnetic at least.... Do you think the silicone would be corrosive on that?

@@waynehamilton5248 I've used that silicone before, once it dries the smell goes away. Just leave the lid open until it cures.
Would have liked to see you verify that the temperature readout was in fact accurate by measuring the internal temperature of the cooler with foods and drinks while in operation. Using a simple temperature infrared "gun" would give very important information.
I use a small refrigerator thermometer, the display is accurate within 2 degrees, check out my newer reviews, I show more information on those reviews.

@@MrWinger1951 the most accurate Iceco fridges are the VL and VL pro series because the temp sensors are exposed to the internal temps of the fridge. The lcd display is usually within 2 degrees of the screen. That's the way it is with all brands, the display isn't exact.... Well most budget brands are actually worse than Iceco lol...
@@Jasonoid Well, the LCD screen readout on my new ICECO VL45 is 7 degrees above the measurable internal food and drinks temperatures using an infrared temperature gun. And since you review ICECO's you should include that info in your vids, actual measurements.

Just got mine. Got it cold, filled it up with food and then had a terrible time finding the right temp. The read out on the fridge is 11 degrees off. When the read out says 32 degrees F, it is actually 41 inside. Sup with that:?
The temp swings up and down depending on if the compressor is running or not. If you measure right when the compressor stops, the temp will be the lowest. If you measure after the compressor has been off for awhile, it will be the warmest. This is normal for all 12v fridges (Even your fridge in your house does this). The key is finding the right 'window' of temp you want. I find that setting the fridge around 33 - 35 will get me in that window without freezing my food. As long as the food inside stays within the 32-43 window is won't spoil.
Fun thing I noticed when I was using coolers with ice, my food would often be in the upper 40s and lower 50s at the end of a trip. So much better with a 12v fridge.

You'll find the number that works best for your setup with a little more testing. The other thing to remember is that the coolest part of the fridge is the bottom since all the cold air sinks. Just put your meats and dairy at the bottom, produce and less cool stuff at the top and you'll be golden.
How long would this run on my Anker 200w portable battery?
It uses about 300wh of power to run the fridge for 24 hours in the summer. So the 200wh battery pack wouldn't last the entire day unless you were charging it in the sun. You just have to experiment in most cases. I always recommend at least 500wh for battery storage just to be safe

@@djordan7979 most common is the Jackery 1000, it has regulated 12v output so it lasts much longer while using a fridge. Cheaper models don't have regulated outputs.

With an average of 30 watts @95F temps, it would 30 hours, if you were running it in 75F ambient, you'd get about 70 hours runtime. Depends on ambient temps mostly.

I know this isn't a help forum, but do you or anyone reading happen to know how to access the "Temperature Compensation Mode" of the VL-45? Iceco responds to emails in poor English (guessing they are Chinese?) and only gave me instructions for the VL 60, using the Mode button, which the VL45 doesn't have. I love my new VL45 but temperature is off by about 8°
How are you measuring your temperature inside? Just curious how you know it's off by 8 degrees.
@@Jasonoid I was using two Acurite 00986 digital refrigerator thermometers. The VL45 display was showing it had reached 0°, compressor not running, and the Acurite thermometers were showing 7 and 8°. It definitely gets below freezing but not quite cold enough for ice cream products. Oh, I also bought the cover using your code, thanks
@@billley3960 it will be colder at the bottom of the fridge and near the sides, I usually like to place my thermometer sitting on something about 6 inches tall in the middle of the large compartment. As long as you put meats at the bottom everything else should be fine.
@@Jasonoid I have one thermometer sitting on ledge above compressor and other in top of a cup of water, so about 4" above the bottom. Overnight the temp was set to 27° and just checking now, thermometer was 35° and water wasn't yet frozen. At one point, I did have fridge filled with pre frozen foods to test but now testing with just small plastic cups filled with water
@@billley3960 each fridge has its own "personality" once you find out where it likes to be set, you don't have to mess with it much. My VL45 likes to be set at 34 degrees to keep things from freezing and the inside averages around 33 to 35 degrees.

It will last 24 hours without solar, with solar panels it runs forever... Well at least until I run into a cloudy day. When it's cloudy I just hook my solar generator to my 4runner battery and the run my engine and it charges it pretty fast.

I use the baskets so you never have to lug the frige full of food. Set your fridge in your truck, pack food in the baskets in the kitchen, bring out and set in place.... saves this old back....

@@Fvck-diversity runtime depends on outside temps. Near 70f you'd get like 5 days of runtime, near 85F to 90F you'd get like 3 days of runtime.

Has anyone had this for some time and can comment on how long it lasts before breaking down?
I have had mine for 3 years, no issues yet. I also have had 3 or 4 truckers mention they have VL45s in their rigs. They have been running them 365 for over 1 or 2, no issues. I've been very impressed.
I hate no smooth walls inside plus the corner crack need silicone. Bacteria grow nest. Dies have any drain for washing? Will be nice to make plastic liner have way to the bottom I'll be easy to clean no nasty bottom. Just ideas
I do recommend using a food grade silicone in the corners to seal it up. I have two models, one is siliconed and one is not. No smell issues on either one because liquid doesn't really get in these fridges because you don't use ice. Check out the new ICECO VLPro series, they upgraded the design on this fridge and made it better. Same great compressor but it has a better lid design and drain plug. I have a new video on my channel and I compare this to that one.

@@snake10566 For example: The VL 45 pulled 0.828 KWhr total over the duration of testing. Converting .828kWh into Amp hours at 12 volts = 69amp hours / 96 hours of total running of the fridge = .71 amp hours per hour at 70 degrees ambient. If the temps are higher you get more power draw, especially at temps about 90 degrees. Sorry for the confusion!
