With all due respect, you seem to be forgetting one quite essential aspect: routing any and all traffic over a pseudo-anonymous VPN somewhat defeats the whole purpose. It merely moves the trust from the ISP to the VPN provider. Depending on the jurisdiction, this can actually be worse. Eg, if the user is an EU citizen, the VPN provider might actually be legally required to adhere to stricter laws than a VPN in a location that has little to no requirements.

  • @DevDungeon

Unless you actually vet your VPN provider and verify for yourself, you really can't trust them. The company could be owned by some some foreign country that harvests data. Just because they say they don't keep _traffic_ logs, doesn't mean they aren't harvesting data from the traffic, storing firewall logs, storing security alerts, WAF logs, load balancer logs, and anything they don't consider _traffic_ logs. It also doesn't mean they don't cooperate with 3rd parties or law enforcement to let them monitor or keep logs of their own. There could also be traffic logs at other levels like the ISP of the VPN company. I think people put way too much blind trust into faceless VPN companies.

I'm not a lawyer but I think If laws allow them too, they can and will. Have you heard about the pirate bay guys? They faced so many raids even despite technically following all their laws. There was also a case where french police were able to deploy tracing malware on a secure phone company completely without the knowledge or consent of the company.

I tried this on Linode and they just forwarded the DMCA requests to me and threatened to shut down my server if I didn't resolve the issue. What's the point of running your own VPN if you just get DMCA'd on your cloud server?
You would need to identify a cloud host that will take DMCA notices and throw them in the trash.

Typically those have KYC requirements to add funds to the cards.

@@MentalOutlaw A few years ago when I was a kid and I couldn't buy things online myself, I'd get around that by buying these prepaid 'gift card' credit cards that I remember being able to find at every grocery store/pharmacy/place that sold gift cards. They'd have a predetermined value and you'd pay that much + a fee at the counter.
I don't recall ever having to activate them myself, and Visa's website seems to agree with what I remember: (www.visa.ca/en_CA/pay-with-visa/cards/gift-cards.html See the heading "Do I need to activate my Visa Gift card?"). I think the cashier needed to activate them as with most other gift cards.
