    When I was a kid, I used to think men doing ballet was embarrassing for them but that was because I had never watched them. I remember one day I watched one of those famous dance movies and that one had ballet and hip hop dancers together and I realized that male ballet dancers are super cool and manly, and they even look more elegant than the girls for me.

    George Balanchine once said that ballet was about the ballerina; to showcase her. The boys can leap but the principal idea was for them to show her off and do the lifts. Times have changed since George Balanchine because of some famous and very physical male dancers that have emerged over the years. People like to watch the power of their performance in solo more now.

      It would require lots of training, and lots of will. Take every opportunity you can to improve, don´t feel discouraged as there will be times when you´d feel you just can´t... It´s a process, your body will learn if you love what you do. Compare against others to improve, not to criticize yourself. Ballet is great for the mind and for the body, regardless of your age. Maybe you will not be part of the Royal Ballet, but that doesn´t mean you can´t start practicing :)

    • @jlushefski
      @jlushefski 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's just the result of someone having low body fat and a certain amount of muscle, so any athletic male will have that look in tights. Glutes are important for every sport.

    • @naomiklahn372
      @naomiklahn372 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's just like weight-lifting in the gym - they lift ballerinas in pas de deux, so need muscular thighs and glutes. Yes, the ballerinas are tiny, but they are often moving whilst the dancer is lifting them. Watch some classical ballets to see what I mean. :)

    Well, if you really wanna know, rather than YT flagging you as spam...I will tell you. Many male dancers started because there were a lot of scantily dressed athletic girls in class (in their own words!) or they got to like it cause they had a sister doing it & saw what it was about. This vid shows advanced men's class though. They do that to work on bigger jumps & turns while girls work more on pointe (i.e. toe shoes). But there are some gay people everywhere. So what?

    Probably not…I am male, gay, and a former ballet dancer. Going into it many years ago, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when I entered the dressing rooms and studios crammed with men with beautiful bodies. Then, I would die a second time and feel like I’d gone to Hell because SO many of these beautiful men would turn out to be straight, and be wholly and completely unavailable to me.

      This is long winded BUT....I asked my parents if I go to Ballet. I was 12. I was told "boys do not "go to Ballet". I did not understand why. At 17, I stepped on a small ice rink that opened at a local mall in deep south NEW ORLEANS. We never thought it would make it because of our weather LOL. (I did grew up in N.O.) Anyway, I was getting ready to graduate from high school and attended the University of N.O. right after. For the next two years, I attended college full time, worked part time as a bank teller, reached about 10 hours each week ice skating and at one point, attended a beginner's ballet and jazz class on Thursday nights at a local dance studio that specialized in BALLET. (Going to dance class was recommended after my first audition with the professional touring show called the Ice Capades. I did not make it into the show but, was told to go to dance class! ) Back then, there was also Ice Follies and Holiday on Ice but. I wanted to land a spot in Ice Capades because they used the chorus boys in all of the +6 production numbers within the two hour show. I was determined and continued the audition process. I also had my height against me because I was considered a "shorty" at only 5'10. My weight was in proportion to my height and build. At 19, I quit school, bank tellering and landed a spot with the Ice Capades!!! Packed up two suit cases, a steamer trunk and a skate bag and ended up touring for four years. I am 60 today and I cannot explain the experience that has lasted a lifetime. Moral of the story: PARENTS!!! DO LET YOUR BOYS TO GROW UP TO BE BALLET DANCERS. (Till this day, I wished I had the opportunity to seriously study the art.) Going to dance class did indeed help with ice skating. And to anyone out there...follow your dream no matter what. I know that is cliché but, I lived it. (I have to resort to ROLLER BLADING back here in New Orleans. NO ICE!!! But at 60, I'll take it.)

    What a pleasure to see men in ballet and they do very well, I marry one like that. It's a delight, it's passion, it's art for ballet

    I want to learn ballet. I always used to imagine myself as a swan and prance and dance in circles with my arms flailing around LOL! These guys are not only incredibly elegant but awfully attractive!

  • @sligerateai5006

    I like how they move-it's kind of elegant and beautiful to see them dance. The jumps-don't start with me on the jumps! I have no words to that!
    I know that being a male ballet dancer you have to support the female ballet dancer on her jumps, clarify me if I'm wrong but comparing between the two, male ballet dancer put a lot of work to that. Carrying an adult female is no joke. When I saw the scene in Swan Lake, Giselle is being carried by the Prince in the midst of her dancing, I thought that huh, the woman must be lightweight. But then later on, I immediately cross to that idea. Even though they were skinny, it doesn't hide the fact that they are heavy af. It's my own conclusion!
    How could they carry the female dancers while being so beautiful and elegant! Like wow... 😲😲

    Message to choreographers : for a question of fairness but above all of equality, it is time to change this outdated and stupid tradition : Male dancers must no longer be reduced to porters for female dancers ! 🧑🏻‍🦱✊🏻

    I been doing ballet for 6 years and I can’t wait to do jumps like those and yea growing up being told “ it for girls “ and being bulled for doing ballet and honestly ballet was a thing to get away from that and I liked that

    I have just recently discovered the beauty, grace, and intensity of Ballet. I have never been interested in Ballet before and I'm 20 years old now. I would love to take classes but I don't plan on dancing to traditional ballet music rather something much different. When did these men start dancing?

    Amanda Jones, I am genuinely interested to know if you asked your son how he got the idea that ballet is not for boys. I am writing an article about this stereotype and so it is interesting to see how even today when we are supposed to be so liberal that children get the wrong idea. Well done for showing him this video.

    I danced for 4 years and I really miss it. I fear that I am too old to join again (im 13) so i'm hesitant to get back into classes. And the fact that i'll have to start back as a beginner sucks.I used to spend almost all my time at my dance studio. I took 6 classes and I loved every second of it. Even when it hurt.

      You are never too old to start dancing, especially since you're only thirteen. You will probably have to work hard to get back to where you used to be, but if you want it hard enough and work hard enough you can get there.

      Girl, I am 20 years old and never danced before. I am hoping to take adult classes -- you are never to old to start anything you desire to do in life. Go for it.

      I am 48 and found a ballet studio that teaches adults. I start private lessons next week and so excited. Plus, adults learn quicker than these 5 & 6 year-olds. But, if you're looking to make ballet a career then, yes, you do need to start dancing at that age so your body and muscles develop the right way. But, for me (personally), I want to learn to dance ballet for my own self enrichment. There are so many benefits to learning ballet.

      Yep! Anyone of any weight can do ballet! When you're a heavier guy like me you do have to be more careful with jumps though. The heavier you are the more you have to build up your leg strength before doing big jumps or you'll hurt your knees. So long as you have the leg muscle though you can do anything!

  • @iaadotlk1
    @iaadotlk1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In classical ballet, a man's leg is not at the knee, but at sour-le-coup-de-pied position. This is not classical at all.
