  • Very short piece of 8mm cine film shot at the 1980 International Gold Cup meeting at Oliver's Mount in Scarborough on Sunday 7th of September. Footage begins with the bikes ( l think its the Vladivar Vodka 250 race ) coming out of the Esses and up the back straight. Then a shot of the huge crowds on the hillside ( 30,000 plus in those days ). 350 race next from the hillside which was won by Steve Tonkin.
Barry Sheene can be seen coming out of the pits with no helmet, on his Akai Yamaha for the second MCN Superbike race and then leaving the start with a huge wheelie. Several shots of him leading Dave Potter coming through the start / finish section and then keeping his lead to win. In the first MCN Superbike race Sheene led throughout but ran wide at Mountside Hairpin on the last lap to let Potter through and take the win, with Keith Heuwen third in both races.
Mick Grant was on top form during the Gold Cup race as seen in the last bit of footage taken at Memorial Corner. Barry Sheene broke down during that race and Grant took the win with Steve Ward 2nd and John Hesselwood 3rd place. Dave Potter went onto win the MCN / Duckhams Superbike Championship title that year. Anymore info about that meeting then please get in touch.

Could only dream of crowds that size now, too expensive & not enough big names

I was there, Johnny one arm, KH250. The good old days, & better people. I remember paying £2 to get into some of the mount races. And Dawsons bike shop used to raffle a new RD 250 for £1 a ticket. Saw Sheene & Grant battling for first & second many times.
