0:52 The Phantom drum major pulling out a baton is an iconic drum corps tradition. Most drum majors don’t use one but Phantom has traditionally leaned heavier into classical music for their inspiration so it’s an acknowledgement to that.
16:10 remember that there is an upper age limit to participating in this. For anyone who is “aging out”, this is their last ever performance. They’ve put everything they had into being one of the best in the world at it, and now it’s done.
I am here for every drum corps reaction video. Subscribed.

Charlie--search Phantom Regiment Spartacus...you''l be blown away! We were in Bloomington back in 2008 too (ironically as guests of Blue Devils). Phantom came from 3rd in prelims to win, and the crowd was *so* incredibly behind them that we knew before BD even took the field that they were not going to win. Feels like we were part of history...so special. Spartacus was arguably the most iconic performance in the history of modern drum corps, and we've been fans ever since. The horn line sounds like no other, year after year.

Not “One Day I’ll Fly Away”. It’s Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto #2, BUT you’re probably hearing Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself”, which borrows that melody liberally.

and Eric actually contacted the estate - to this day ( including Celine) 50% of royalties are saent to the Rachmaninoff estate.
Given the execution of the ballad, I, an avowed Rachmanioff stan, believe that Sergei would have been overjoyed to see his powerful emotional work spread out to so many people outside his admittedly limtied range in his lifetime.

these two corps are among the very first I ever saw at Wold level ( actually marched in a tiny show in Edmonton in 1977 against what would be considered local and Open class groups - and we were a HS BAnd!). They were both present at the very first Corps Encore in Ogden 40ish years ago.. I knew of SCV, several of our bands members had auditioned and been accepted in summer of 1980),but had never seen Phantom before I remember VERY VIVIDLY their pith helmets, capes, and opening formation on the upper left corner of the fireld, back when they stil needed permission to "enter the fireld in competiom". The giant Chevron on their truck is another vivid memory of mine, and one of the thing that made me sit up and take notice.

Phantom Regiment never disappoints - their precision and dynamics are always amazing. I first saw them in '89. Looking at the changes that have taken place over time, it's interesting to see how the shows have developed. I miss the "G" bugle sound, but I get why that had to change.
You can find the '89 DCI finals out on TH-cam - definitely worth a watch, there were so many excellent corps that year. You'll see a different set of rules - horn line wasn't allowed off the field, field judges were dodging the horn line, percussion battery and colorguard, and the horns were 2 valve bugles.
If you want to see a smaller version of this, I posted videos of the A60 corps I was in on my channel. Not a lot of those corps left anymore. But it's where we learned to put emotion in our playing and leave it all out on the field, just like the big corps.

    1. DCI Finals week nearly always has shows/competitions Thurs/Fri/Sat that first week of August in Indianapolis Indiana.
    2. Phantom Regiment is built on what one might call the classical playbook. At least back in the day, all their music "books" were based on the music of symphony halls.

These young adults come from many years of disciplined marching band programs and represent the best of the best and each one of them has such a great love for marching that they are willing to sacrifice their summers for this program. I truly hope you're able to make it to the states someday to see a show in person. The fact you're so moved by just the videos of the performances shows that this activity is perfect for you. You understand it (maybe not in depth like us nerds lol) but you still *get it.* I know I've said it before, but seeing a show in person feels life changing. Even year after year, it's always such an insane experience. Thank you so much again for allowing yourself to be exposed to new music, new art, new Ideas. And for allowing yourself to be moved by these performances. That's all the members want to do. They want you to feel the same emotions they feel. Thank you again Charlie.
If there were any 1 show I would recommend to you, it'd be the Blue Stars 2023 show *"IN ABSINTHEia."* I personally believe this show is criminally underrated by fans. It's about the old myth that Absinthe was Psychedelic in nature. So the show is built around what a theorized "trip" on Absinthe would be like. The large sugar cube props, for how you serve the drink over sugar cubes. The green uniforms in the same shade as the drink. The music and drill are all so energetic, and you can feel that every single member was 200% committed. It's such a strange show, but it's so insanely energetic! That show is my favorite of the 2023 season, and I would love to see you react to it!

I absolutely adore watching DCI, and being part of the magical experience of this amazing community! I’ve been doing Marching Band for three years straight, and it just makes me even more appreciative of how much time, energy, and dedication that goes into every single show!
Just a little thing you might appreciate when it comes to the visual effects. The Color Guard, who are the dancers with the flags, rifles, and sabres, are so freaking talented. You have no idea how hard it is to get all of those people to be in sync like that with those things until you do something like this. 😅 Which just makes it so much better for me. I’ve been doing Color Guard myself for a while, and it just amazes me how clean everything is, and how hard just even little tosses are. I’ve been doing this for three years, and I’m still nowhere close to doing even half of the things these amazingly talented people are doing. Just as a suggestion, watch the Color Guard for a bit and see what their actual movements are and you’ll see what I mean.
Sorry for my little rant! Enjoy the amazing people who work so hard in such a niche community and keep watching! These are the best of the best you’re watching, after all! May we celebrate just how hard they work just to put on a show for everyone who watches and appreciates them! Go, DCI!🎉🎉

santa clara vanguard 2009, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 (a bit abstract, i'd save this one for later), or 2019 (this one has Nothing Else Matters in it!)
blue devils 2014 (highest scoring show of all time), 2017, or 2019
    bluecoats 2014, 2015, 2016, or 2022
carolina crown 2011 (bc you seem like a rock fan), 2012, 2013, 2015, or 2019
cadets 2011 (the cadets just went out of business, RIP)
    boston crusaders 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, or 2023
    troopers 2022
    academy 2016
    blue knights 2014 or 2019
    mandarins 2018
i hope you get to make it out here to see dci championships! competitions run this year from june 26th to august 10th :)

Phantom is one of those middle of the pack drumcorps that consistently susprises me every season. As a member of a world class Drum Corps, my most memorable moments as an audience member are almost always of Phantom, Troop and Mandos. Its fantastic to see Phantom getting the spotlight.

That's a stupid statement. Phantom Regiment TO YOU is a middle of the pack drum corps. They have two DCI titles and many, many top 6 finishes. When I marched in the early to mid '90s they never finished lower than 5th. You might belong to this generation, but get your history right.

@@veot.2869 i mean they are definitely one of the most iconic drum corps, and all of their shows are really good. But considering finals is top 12, and this show places 7th and thats pretty much where they place its quite accurate to call them middle of the pack. That doesnt mean their shows arent incredible and super fun to watch, troopers placed 12th in 22 and thats one of my favorite shows to watch. but as of know score wise they are middle of the pack

whenever you can make it over here to watch, so you can get good seats tickets for finals usually go on sale around December! the best spots really depend on what you want to see/hear more, stick towards the middle but if you want a better view of whats happening on the field go higher and if you want to get hit with a wall of sound go lower. I also recommend not going into the mezzanines since they're super far away so it's hard to tell what's happening and it's a pain to get up there lmao

also since world champs is 3 days, if you only go to one day I recommend semifinals. There's less corps than prelims so it doesn't go on too late but you get to see 25 corps instead of 12, and it usually also includes the top 3 or so open class corps which is always great to watch!

I adore "No Walk Too Far" the brilliance of Bergersen into Melillo, then the emotioanlly wracking Ballad. And to top[ it off with Mahler's legendary 5th. The main thing I have forever loved about PR is.. the fact that are undoubtedly to me one of the most emotionally brilliant corps of all time. They arent up there with BD, Crwon, even SCV in sheer power - but symphincally and emotionally, they never let me down.

I have to recommend Harmonic Journey, Phantom Regiment's all time classic show from 2003. By the way, here's a little bit of Phantom Regiment lore for you. At the end of their show here, the front line knelt down and kicked out their legs, which is a tradition in the Phantom Regiment dating back to their very early shows. It's become a trademark move of the corps which they usually refrain from using all season until the finals performance at the world championships (for the fans).
Since you've already checked out a Bluecoats performance as well, it also bears mentioning they have their own little tradition as well. Fans of the Bluecoats tend to cheer for them by shouting "Bluuuueeeee" and for first time listeners it can be funny to see their reactions because sometimes it sounds like Booing instead of Blueing!
