    Thanks so much for the post. I'm presently up to my ears with building pretty much your copy carver. The aluminum pieces should arrive next week. Still have the stylus issue to develop. What you've done with the stylus is nothing short of awesome. At McBaine Ukuleles we're shifting from solely acoustic ukes to some solid bodies--i.e., Les Paul wannabes. In spite of some of your comments, we're hoping the copy carver reduces time for crafting, three different size necks for the ukes we build.

    Great piece of kit, perhaps one little improvement would be to have the brake operate in reverse, ie it only slides when the lever is depressed making it a little less stress on the hand, also it wouldn’t slide about while being moved around.
    Good videos you produce by the way, Merry Xmas from Wales UK.

    Very cool, seeing so many Gibson Les Paul guitars in my life that have different top profiles made me come up with few theories:
    1. Gibson never heard of a copy machine (which is pretty simple machine)
    2. The people operating a machine where completely intoxicated
    3. They still are trying to figure out how to use a copy machine
    LOL

    I'm designing my own cnc router/mill for wood carving and other stuff(metals),the copy carver(pantograph) is a really cool piece of kit,though one thing always bugged me ,and it's how most don't keep the tool and stylus vertical,for pickup and neck pockets,it can be done with a little more engineering,in fact not much at all,still if it works don't break it,hang on ,i'm scottish maybe i got the saying wrong(or did i...Hmmmmmm).

      very true,just acquired a tele thinline stencil set i'm re-cutting on acrylic,might re-sell the mdf set if the re-cuts turn out good,the copy carve is a good tool if the money for a 4-5k cnc is tight,building one can be a couple 'o' hundred pounds/dollars if you can build yer own,china sell parts new that will do a great job,save the pennies from the new cnc workhorse' profit and buy better euro/us parts,i should say uk/us but we're still tied in at the mo',i digress,check out diy cnc,the dead head made quick work of the neck i saw in one vid,10 mins or so,yes manual tools can get it sorted pretty quick,but the way of it is accurate repeatability,almost like samuel colts interchangeability of parts (i love guns,yee ha),shame i live in shitland er scotland commie plc.
      look forward to watching more builds and tricks.

    Your copy Carver looks heavier duty and more accurate than any of the shop built or even bought ones I have seen. If you wanted to carve a thinner bodied LP could you adjust the stylus to make it copy from the thicker template or would you have to block up the thinner body to match the height of the template? Looks to me you are like 2/3 of the way to a shop built CNC. Any thoughts about going skynet on these pieces of wood or timber for you Aussies out there?

    • @TexasToastGuitars

      Hi Michael,
      We are not huge fans of CNC, it's just not sexy enough for us...
      That copy carver is pretty slick, we were originally going to use it for more things so it is way to big. You cold absolutely make thinner bodies with the stylus but we usually just shim up underneath the body to do the thinner ones.

    Hi I am currently building 2 projects a cnc router and a copy carver I was thinking that there are so many copies of Les Pauls and PRS's out there now that may the body from one of the cheap bolt on neck copies would serve as a template with a little bit of tweaking

  • @yakfish36
    @yakfish36 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work mate these are EXPENSIVE to buy. 2 questions please, does it matter that the router bit isn't vertical to the piece? Do you recommend a bit profile since it is angled. The commercial one I was looking at has a separate joint that keeps the router and pointer straight up and down but in aussie bucks by the time I got it here we are well over 6 grand. So to to make it. Have you cut binding channel with it?

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In our experience the angle of the bit isn't a big deal, of course, we only use it for carving tops. We do not cut binding channels with ours.

    Hi there again. I have a quick question. I have replicated your design and wanted to ask this. When yo have your master blank on left and glued up blank on right. The glued up blank has half in maple top so is considerably higher than the master in thickness. Would you still set up and cut in one go or do you have a different sequence. I note in the video the right hand blank was partially completed so you were not cutting too much. Newbie question sorry lol

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, you are right, any material you can remove before you use the copy carver is worthwhile. Especially if you have a regular router as the cutting tool. Could this be used to copy a neck or would that be wild and risk ruining the neck?

    • @TexasToastGuitars
      @TexasToastGuitars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly could be used for necks. We have found that the deadhead sander is better but the copy carver did some great work on necks for us in the past

    Nice video, do you have drawings for that duplicator?

      Hi Christopher, I'm sorry but I don't have any drawings. It was sort of a build it as you go proposition.

    Hey I was just wondering what router bit you are using for the copy carver?

    Where did you buy your stylus/guide? Or did you make it yourself?

    OMG just get a CNC already. You are 75% there already. :-).

      I don't have anything against CNC guitar builders... just not my style.

    • @bigvelvetdog
      @bigvelvetdog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      a few motors and a computer and that is a CNC. Just giving you a hard time. I started on a copy carver and eventually went CNC. Its the gateway tool... :-)

      It's peculiar how there is such a divide between builders who use kinds of tools. Actually, the whole Coke vs. Pepsi, .45 vs 9mm, Ford vs Chevey thing is peculiar to me. Maybe I should start a TH-cam war between CNC builders and old school builders. I would have to act like I care about the topic but being controversial is good for generating views.

      CNC is not hand built, some of us craftsman care about that. Not a knock on CNC builders at all we just have different ideas on how to build things. I would rather build a machine that accomplishes 1 task really well than spend 10 years learning how to program a computer to do it for me.

    I'm not that impressed. Had u started to cut out a new guitar from a rectangular piece... well then. But maybe I dint unnerstand the purpose. Anyway Matt you're a hero. And Chris too.

    Hi Matt, saw most of the vids now,they are cool, but as far as i remember, i never saw you wearing ear protection. You should really do that as a musician. But hey, it are not my ears. Greetz.

      Thanks for watching Bruno, I do wear those ear plugs sometimes it is certainly good advice for people to use all the safety gear.

      Thanks for the reply Matt. Indeed a good advice. I almost lost two fingers on jointer. I was very lucky it were only the tops of my index and middle fingers. They could fix it pretty well, so i still can play guitar. Forgot something, i also saw you a bunch of time removing cutted wood with your hand on the band saw. Better use a stick of wood man. Believe me, it happens before you even mentioning it or feel it. I know it's not of my bussines, but that's also not a good thing to show to viewers. Many people see something and copy it. Greetz from Belgium and keep the vids comming pall.

    Yer right it's super accurate, but it is overkill and over-expense! linear bearings, alum vrs steel tubing, etc. You don't need all that CNC precision parts for a basic copy carver for wood! And yes the counter weight should in fact lift the router when you let go!
