  • Metro Vancouver is advancing the region’s zero waste goal and increasing revenue by improving metal recovery at the Waste-to-Energy Facility. A giant metal extractor collects ferrous materials like iron. In 2018 the extraction system was expanded to collect valuable non-ferrous metals like aluminium and copper. Waste-to-energy facilities recover energy and metals from garbage that cannot be recycled.

The internet is cool. I wondered if somebody was doing something like this and here I am. This seems like a good way to get rid of trash and still recover some of the useful remains. I just watched a video on New York's similar trash processing. One of the things that video mentioned was that the CO2 produced by the burning is more than offset by the reduced amount of methane that would be released to the air if the trash was put into a landfill. Retrieving the non-ferrous metals is another ecological nicety. It takes a lot of electricity to smelt aluminum ore. Aluminum recovered this way results in a big energy saving.
