I got an AMBER alert just a few days ago about a girl who was kidnapped in upstate New York. The system works. (Thankfully, she was found and returned to her family.)
That was near my town, a neighbor had taken her and they caught him because he tried making a ransom note and left fingerprints on it. He was also a registered sex offender so take that information as you will. I'm glad they found her.

I simply shut off my emergency notifications. Also put my phone on airplane mode. Also wrapped it in aluminum foil. Also put it way back in the bathroom where I never get any reception anyway. So I never got the notification at all!! And I'm happy about it. Yes!

Sending a practice alert only works if the agency that sent it can tell if it was actually recieved. If the government can tell I recieved the alert without asking me then I am being monitored by the gov - I don't like that one bit. (Hint, NEVER trust the government.)

No donald, all that the government needs is a simple validation ping to be sent back to them if the alert plays. It could be just a few bytes of data (IP adress, maybe a short string of letters) They totally are spying on you, but most of us aren't interesting enough to catch the eye of the glowies.

I simply shut off my emergency notifications. Also put my phone on airplane mode. Also wrapped it in aluminum foil. Also put it way back in the bathroom where I never get any reception anyway. So I never got the notification at all!! And I'm happy about it. Yes!

At one time we had silos here with nuclear weapons loaded under ground then in the early 70’s they built their first nuclear power plant. Sirens also notify of impending weather. Our country use to have tv 📺 warnings test every week

My dad and I were standing next to each other he got it twice in Spanish, then finally in English. I only received it in English and we are both on the same phone account. Both of our phones are set to English

.. a tech channel on TH-cam called … Payette Forward … teaches how to go into settings & turn things off .. helped me allot .. if U have iPhone U can always call Apple support and a live Tech will talk U through it..

I wasn't startled. I was well prepared but still suffered a large complex partial gneralised to tonic clonic seizure from the sound despite my best efforts.
This is different in that it is MANDATORY & over rides Airplane Mode or Do Not Disturb. We are allowed to turn off Amber Alerts or Weather Alerts...but not this "Presidential Alert".

That lady is not being honest when she said they're trying to "thread the needle" on when and when not to send. If there's an emergency then send it. There is no "is this important enough?" question to ask. It's either an emergency or it isn't. The question is what constitutes an "emergency." Given the authority to send out messages without a clear definition of emergency, we WILL end up with ads, nonsense and political "alerts." It's inevitable. It's not about too many or too few, it's about emergency vs non-emergency alerts. For example, I live in an earthquake zone. I don't want to get an alert after every earthquake - my phone would never stop alerting. But to say earthquakes in MY state of 5 or more on the scale are going to be alerted on.
