      I'm at novice at sailing, and lov these posts. My question is, whats the difference between Precision and North Sails?

      Sure, guess could lie and say was through here ... was not due to reputation and having heard long time prior to this channel ;)

      Hi Gregor, I can describe Precision Sails, but will let someone else comment on North Sails.
      We are an Independant Sail Loft located in Victoria BC Canada where we design our sails and provide warranty repairs. We have employed technology and software to allow us to offer exceptionally designed sails and amazing customer service at a much lower cost to more sailors than traditional sail lofts.
      For more information please visit www.precisionsailloft.com or give me a call 888-958-5638 - Ron McInnis- Precision Sails

    I have finally caught up from your very first videos to now. It feels like dessert in a way, after watching all your hardwork from tearing things out and oh so much sanding and then painting.... again and again, breathing this boat back to life and watching all the places it is going. Obviously your editing skills have blossomed haha, but I'm so glad you showed your journey. I know so many were urging you to just go but I appreciate watching you change the mess it was into the beauty it is now. I may only want a few weeks up at Drummond Island MI and then get back to what I hope to call my own paradise one day (acres of land with my horses) but I love living vicariously through y'all's journey on open waters! I definitely don't see leaving my love for horses to go sailing so I think these videos you share with us fill that small desire for water the rest of the year I don't get to be in it. So thank you Matt & Jessica! I also know the feeling of seeing your logo/brand on something and the joy of knowing the story behind it and feeling like it fits so well, so glad they encorperated it into the sail!

    I wanted to share our experience with Precision Sails.
    We have a 39' Ovni that we cruise 6 to 10 months of the year, and last summer we retired our Rolly-Tasker staysail after a rather brisk blow coming around Hatteras. That sail served us very well, and we went looking to improve upon the sail by going up a weight in cloth to 10oz , adding battens and a reef. We reached out to North, Ullman, Evolution and Precision Sails for quotes, and went with Precision based on the shout-outs you have given them as well as their following among other channels. Our finished sail arrived and we hoisted it, very surprised to see the 4 lower hanks were missing and polypropylene was used as the downhaul/jackline for reefing. We flew the sail for 48 hours from the Chesapeake around Hatteras to Wrightsville Beach, and we were surprised to see that the sail grew/stretched considerably in this time. So much so, we had to remove the strop and tack the sail directly to the deck to get full hoist! The provided clewboard also corroded heavily in that amount of time, and all of the stainless hardware showed pitting and staining on the new sail.
    Precision offered a replacement/remake sail, and we waited 4 months for it to arrive. The second staysail arrived and had serious issues right out of the box, most notably that polypropylene was used for the bolt rope. The fabric also was very light, in the 5-6oz range, and missing a batten and the reinforced/radial corners as requested in the design. We compared the fabric to the material of our light-air genoa, which is 4oz material, and this was marginally heavier. Looking closer, all stitching was loose, with a lot of jumped/skipped stitches. We never hoisted this sail, opting to return it immediately as it would be a serious liability offshore. The Precision rep begged us for a 3rd shot to make things right, explaining they had manufacturing issues, and they would get the 3rd sail right... at this point we should have waved them off, but again, going from the reviews and wide popularity amongst your channel and others, we allowed a 3rd sail to be made.
    The 3rd sail arrived, and was nearly a copy of the second sail. Tattered stitching coming loose, substantially lighter than 10oz fabric, and a clewboard that was unfinished with sharp 90° edges that would saw through a soft shackle, lines, or cut sailcloth while rolled up, reefed, or stowed. Also.... polypropylene was used for the bolt rope, again. A call to Precision was in order, at which time I was bounced to several employees, from the design to warranty departments, and they tried to convince me that I had 10oz Dacron and the sail's bolt rope was not polypropylene. Precision was going to stick us with this sail, took quite a bit of arguing and photographs to convince them otherwise. I finally received a refund after finding a phone number for and contacting Darryl from Precision.
    Now, 1 year later, we are back to square 1 and are working with North to design a staysail. We are also living with the moral hangover of mailing 130 pounds of plastic to the East Coast of the US from China. This experience has made us rather bitter; we missed our window to make St Martin via Bermuda this year as the staysail is an important part of our sailplan, we fly double-headed headsails to reduce weather helm, and give us opportunities to quickly reef for squalls (put away the genny and good to go for most squalls).
    After doing some research and talking to other sailors, we learned that substandard materials and design are pretty common from Precision, and a visit to Bacon Sails in Annapolis also spoke volumes. Bacon takes in Precision sail's 'do-overs' and sells them, and we have mailed them 3 staysails, the first of which they measured and listed for sale. We were surprised to find they have 140 new/lightly used Precision Sails in stock, and many of them have issues with construction, materials, shape, etc. The Bacon Sails-man mentioned that is pretty regular to have Precision Sails come in, brand-new, for recutting, repair, or other services due to manufacturing or design issues. They have our 1st staysail listed on their website, checking in at 8oz cloth, and measured about a foot longer in the luff than we ordered.
    We have followed your channel before YT sailing was cool, and your knowledge and experience offshore has to be among the best with all the miles under your heels & keel. Our perception of the products, gear & kit you recommend has been shaken by this experience however, and we are curious if you're still flying Precision Sails on Delos. Also, you had a video years ago in which a genoa came apart at the UV cover joint, and a replacement came from Precision. Was that due to light materials or inferior craftsmanship in your opinion? James of Zingaro had a new spinnaker and complete set of sails made by Precision, and the kite turned into ribbons within the first day or two of use. James shared his opinion of their sails as "cheap Chinese made crap" and said the only reason he flies their sails is because they were free.
    We feel wholly let-down by this experience and those who pointed us in the direction of Precision Sails, and feel that it is important to share this with their sponsored sailors. The issues with all 3 sails has been thoroughly documented with photos and video, and our email thread with Precision is all available.

      I think you commented on the wrong channel's video - we are not Sailing Delos.

    I have control line kites that are half the wingspan of those and on a good wind day it will drag you down the beach with your heels dug in. So much fun!
    That sail is gorgeous, and I too would hoist it every opportunity to show off that impressive logo. Remarkable!

    The new sail looks fantastic! As you well know, being a full cutter rig and not just a removable baby stay to to hank a heavy weather stay-sail onto presents more issues to deal with than the simpler head-sail arrangement of a more succinct sloop. Keeping the foresail sized and shaped for easy transfer between the fore-stays and maximizing wind power coverage entails many trade-offs. You did very well there. Certainly better than any newbie would do. Congratulations on your wonderfully thought out sail plan.

      Bruce. We are looking for a new radio to just receive weatherfax. We were given a Furuno 206, but I can't get it to receive like our old Sony did last time we needed one. So far, the printer is just spitting out blank sheets. I've switched everything off on the boat, ran the antenna 10 diff ways and played with all setting that I could find, but still nothing.
      For the Atlantic crossing, we are going to use an Iridium GO, but want a back-up receiver for weatherfax, but unsure what to buy now.

    Velcro is amazing, My mainsail on my old boat, a 24 foot Endeavour, had a loose foot with a simple Velcro band around the boom for the tack and that takes all the loads when sailing upwind with the main cranked on hard, Never slipped a millimetre over 8 years of sailing.

    We totally must have passed each other. We left Antigua on April 7th heading back towards the states. We stopped in the DR and had to leave the boat to return to work. But I will be back on the 15th of May to sail her the rest of the way. And we also have a Sail that Precision Sails did for us. We have yet to fly it as we could not get a good rigger on Antigua to commit to working on the boat as they are on Island Time. But will have many opportunities to sail her once we get the rigging done in the States.

    Good video. I have an off shore headsail from Precision that is well built except for the velcro flap on the leech. After two years, the Velcro has lost its staying power and the sail is now back on warranty to have it fixed. Curious how yours holds up. I’ve seen far more robust Velcro on other makes of sails.

      Depends on the size, cloth material, and how many bells and whistles you add on. All totaled up, I think the retail cost of our sail was close to 3k. Not bad at all for what you're getting in return.

  • @andrewkeir2282
    @andrewkeir2282 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I reckon if you had the arrangement going up the sail and down again for the leach line adjustment there would be just too much friction to really work , especially with a roller furling sail. Maybe what you have to do is to furl the sail and adjust the leach line then unfurl if that is feasible.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. It would be horrible to furl and still try to adjust leech tension.

    That sail is a beautiful cut...superbly customised to the boat. I don't recall you mentioning it, but can I assume Precision provided the sail free of charge in exchange for advertising/promotion. Pls correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption. Nothing wrong with that, you've built a subscribership that suppliers are prepared to associate with and that's a good thing. Look fwd to the next video👍

    • @MJSailing

      We did not mention in this video (probably should have), but in the previous two related to the quote and measurements, yes, the sail was an exchange for promotion. If we had money to spring for a new sail on our own though, we would still have loved to work with them! 😍

      Their primary application is on the commercial side but they also offer smaller quantities (gallons/qt) for retail. I believe your first order gives a 10-15% discount. I've been using their ablatives on my last two boats (high copper)with fantastic results and the prices simply can't be matched for similar quality paints. Not that you need it, but their epoxy barrier paint is a little thicker than Interprotect 1000 and allows for 10mil application in just two coats. So far so good on my current boat. Best of luck out there! Dan

  • @lazydays7470
    @lazydays7470 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It sounds like you need to switch bottom paints. I believe (but not sure) that you can epoxy coat the bottom with a clear epoxy that has powdered copper mixed in it. That won't eliminate the need for regular bottom paint but may help extend the life of it. Copper is toxic to algae and marine micro-organisms but the fact that it is encapsulated in epoxy may fulfill regulations on it's use. I am not sure I am correct on this as I have been away from the sailboat mfg. business for many years but I seem to remember people using copper filled epoxy. I am sure someone can offer a more updated technique/comments.

    Just your headsail is from Precision ? You mentioned the staysail, it's newish but not from Precision ? What about the Mainsail ?

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The new headsail is from Precision, but just before working with them we bought a new staysail from Far East Sails in Hong Kong. That was a bit harder because you have no one to walk you through the process and have to know *exactly* what you're looking for going in. Elements definitely needs a new mainsail, so hopefully you'll be seeing a new Precision one up there later this year!

      Hi Dean! We are in Falmouth Harbour in Antigua right now, participating in Antigua sail week. Delos was pretty far south in the Caribbean, and just put their boat up in Grenada for hurricane season. LaVagabonde actually dropped anchor just next to us in St. Martin, but we were always on opposite schedules and never got the chance to meet.

  • @kevinfisher1345
    @kevinfisher1345 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry but wrong. The ablative paint is not cleaning itself too well. If that were the case you would not have needed to scrape it twice already. You really should not be scaping it at all as that will remove the paint (why you are starting to see through it now). Sailboats just do not move fast enough for ablative paint to work well. It is really more for power boats. However, an ablative paint should cut down on maintenance of scraping as often. Instead of monthly or bi-monthly sounds like you have extended that to semi-annualy. Just that ablative will not last as long as expected.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure Matt will reply to this one a little better, but we've never had to actually scrape the bottom yet. Since it's been all soft growth we just take a microfiber cloth to it.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The growth happened when we were sitting still in one place for a bit. Unfortunately, the chemicals aren't keeping the growth away, and once attached, aren't shedding off like I hoped they would. We are not loving this paint!
      Matt

    • @kevinfisher1345
      @kevinfisher1345 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah sorry my mistake, thought you were scraping. That may be an issue with that particular paint than. Still, ablative paint works much better on faster boat that is used on very regular basis. Like fishing vessel. It can and does work to a degree on regularly used sailboat. Just that it will not see same expected life expectancy or results.

    self-sharpening antifouling should be banned every time you see for yourself how polluting and poisonous it is.
    Go for a smooth antifouling on a silicone basis expensive but no poison.
    HEMPEL SILIC ONE 77450 is a biocide-free, high-solid, non-adherent coating that cures
    under the influence of air humidity. A microlayer hydrogel based on silicone provides one
    smooth, low surface energy-repellent coating, which prevents organisms from attaching to the hull
    and tightening the screw, while the silicone polymers promote the self-cleaning action.
