- I show how to recycle 3D Pen plastic waste into fun and useful objects using silicone molds and a toaster oven.
This method of recycling works well when paired with 3D Pens, because it easily provides a solid PLA shape which can then be penned upon.

I did this fairly recently with some heart shaped silicone chocolate moulds, made them in to really pretty necklaces for my girlfriend. A few tips -firstly your temperature is way too high! 205c is the temp needed to push through a nozzle, but I used about 100c for 40-50 minutes and it melted fine - NO BUBBLES! It's not a race. Also, you don't need any oil. I keep my plastic waste separated by colour, I think it looks much nicer when it's only 2-3 colours.

@@PotentPrintables I have the exact same moulds for my resin projects but what I did was used chocolate in r2d2 mould stuck them together to make one whole droid

Something I only learned very recently - spray oils contain dimethyl silicon (anti-foaming) that can break down at least some silicone rubbers. Check your molds to see if they start getting sticky after a while. You could always use plain bottled oil with a paper towel if you have issues.

Life hack for 3d pens: if u cant get a wood burner just use the end of your 3d pen with out dispersing any filament
the tip it hot enough to smooth out the plastic.

Why not use a small food processor that has a coffee bean or whole nut setting to finely grind the waste into a semi fine texture. For me coffee bean setting works great to create a fine texture with less air. You can tamp the fibers too in a mold. I also seperate my colors as best as I can. But I rarely use multiple colors. I prefer to paint on a neutral color. I also use 3d doodler pro pen.

These videos are very inspiring! You might find it useful to build a paper hopper above the cavity of the mold to hold extra filament waste chips. Have you ever used a household iron to smooth larger flat areas?
I think if you trim the material even smaller, less bubble will be made.

I wonder if starting with a small amount of plastic in the mold would make it easier for the bubbles to escape, then adding more and melting again.

Nice Video, its good to know that PLA can be recycled like this, just a thought to try and stop the bubbling, try a smithing approach, melt the PLA down into a melting pot and pour it into the moulds?
it's really better than throwing it in the trash

Nice technique. I am curious tho if you can eliminate the bubbles by shredding the plastic into powder with a blender to cover more density inside the form.

If you were to use a blender or grinder of some kind to break the waste into smell pellets I bet you could pack alot more into each mould, perhaps have less air bubbles

I already have a dedicated toaster oven for my polymer clay work... and well, that's just another form of plastic, right? I've also been keeping the scraps and shreds of not only my 3D pen, but my less -than-a-month-old 3D printer as well.
Hmm... and I already have and know how to use oven-safe mold putty...

I just want to say when you use things that small there is going to be a lot of air inbetween the pieces
What I do with my 3D pen waist is if I have a hole and I could take some of it and then just melt it onto that hole using the tip of my pen

consider melting down the plastic with acetone instead of heat.
