Thank you for this very important discussion. The arbitrary barrier between natural and social sciences has been an impediment in many philosophical discussions. This type of open conversation will help break that barrier. What we label as wisdom or religion can thus be explained as biological processes in evolution. Same as birds building intricate houses or beavers building dams. Hanging colourful objects or painting the skin with colour could be explained as mimicking animals with colourful pigments, and both of which helped in natural selection. All of this then leads us to the fundamental "wanting" to exist, or simply to "exist".

If you want to move Biology to the top of the ladder, then figure out where consciousness resides and works in the human body. You should get a Nobel Prize for that as well as the meaning of life and explain the illusion of our universe.

@@mikel4879 You feel this way because your consciousness tells you this. But where exactly is our consciousness inside our body or our brains? When you see a car, you “know” that’s its real and that it was made by people but the moon is real as well, right? But who made the moon? We know that people didn’t make it. So we have to ask ourselves, Who did make it then? When you discover the answer, you will also discover the truth to our existence. Let me know if you get stuck and I’ll give you more clues but the search is just as enjoyable as the answer.

Well, you're unlucky, because I don't give a damn about religions, faiths and gods.
It you are religious, then feel free to talk to my hand anytime./
Consciousness is a complex material function created exactly in the real material brain. Any bacterium has a bit of consciousness, your dog has a bit more, and humans have the most.
It has been created by evolution in a very long time in the real material aggregate called brain.
When you become demented, exactly that real material scaffolding in your brain called consciousness gets destroyed, and you lose the connection with reality, so you become semi or non-conscious.
      Etc, etc.
So, please, spare me from your religious delusions.

@@mikel4879 I understand your frustration in understanding our existence and the meaning of it all. I personally have been kicking myself for most of my life trying to make sense of it and if we look back at the history of mankind, it’s apparent that people have been wondering about this since Day One. And all the philosophers and scientists and the religions - nobody - seems to be able to get a handle on it. All we can definitely take away from life are the experiences and feelings and emotions and thoughts. And that is okay because that, I believe, is what this life on earth was intended to do. There is no right or wrong answer. Just the experience. And we get that and think about it and analyze it and dream about it and experience it ALL, through our consciousness. If we aren’t conscious of it, then what would it matter if it was real or imaginary or fake. I remember a comedian talking about him and his wife on a beach and she caught him staring at a beautiful busty young woman and she jealously and angrily yelled at him to make him feel ashamed at himself and the argument that she used was to tell him that the young ladies boobs were fake, just implants. And he told his wife that he knew that, just like he knew Superman was fake, but that didn’t take away any of his pleasures from enjoying it all. Now we both know that comedian will never get to meet Superman any more than he’ll get to touch those fake boobies on the girl that he was checking out, but the thought of it all that he experienced with his consciousness was pleasurable to him and it sparked his imagination. That’s the beauty of this existence that we have while we are here and experience through consciousness. And that’s all we can take away. You never see a U-Haul truck following a hearse so that the dearly departed can take all his stuff with him. The Egyptian Pharaohs tried that and we see that didn’t work out so well. And so life is what we make of it and all the experiences we can get, and just like a movie, some are great, some are good, and some are lousy and a waste of time and money. What we all need to decide is what movie we want to make with our lives, while at the same time knowing that we can’t take the material stuff with us and that the human body doesn’t live forever. All we have and keep are the experiences. If it were otherwise I’d hang out with Superman and have a girlfriend with huge fake boobies. Life is what we can make of it and experience and if you can find joy and happiness and meaning, what difference would it make how you found it, you just enjoy it and be thankful for it. For then you will take pleasure in every morning when you wake up and get another chance to enjoy it even more.

Mike H / And here you are, writing a long useless text that has nothing to do with the correct understanding of consciousness.
      You're just wasting my time.
It doesn't matter what you consciously or semi-consciously understand. What it really matters is the real material process itself in your brain called consciousness.
Why the humanity is interested in it? Because it wants to fully reproduce it artificially.
      Do you understand now?

Theology of biology would be important here, especially regarding questions of morality (sex, death, theft) as to whether man is privileged or held to account in a way other animals are. If the deity has no qualms about other animals doing these things, why would it have qualms about our species doing the same things? From where does our morality evolve? Does God have a personal stake in our morality? Could such a being be Supreme? Is human suffering privileged over the suffering of other animals? How and by whom?

If we noticed that, as a newton law’s, energies never been destroyed, but they’ll be transferred to the different types of energies! another words, if we counted human being as a combination of the different energies, then we can understand that, when we dies, our electrical energy, will be transferred to the lights or photons, and the rest of our body’s, which is the dead energies , goes in to the graves ( holes ) and get mixed with the soils , the phenomenon described above, is the philosophy of biological science, which works in earth 🌍 and also , in space and universes which we call it quantum mechanics.

I think that we should try to combine every field of knowledge into one and instead of seeing them as completely different see them as all parts of a greater whole which is the truth about reality and I think they all need to be assessed individually to see if it's worth to combine a certain field of knowledge to the greater whole but to analyze them on whether or not they should be combined into the greater whole of this ultimate field of study you would have to judge them on individual level for example you would not say that math is invalid because it doesn't work on a scientific method the same for philosophy you wouldn't call philosophy invalid because it doesn't work on a scientific method so I think we should be trying to combine these different fields of study as much as we can to understand the truth about reality.

Wisdom is probably the most important thing. The pinnacle of Being once recognized, the relating of all things, in to unity, the great meaning and purpose found.
What more important goal is there than acquiring Wisdom. It is likely our very Being. Our shaping with chisel & hammer away of the excess so our true form is had. The Lotus body, Soul, is same as Wisdom. Working on ourself, chiseling away the false notions, belief, our true form was always there; working on ourselves is just that.

I approve this message. Bodies wire neuroplastic brains, and a philosophy that factors in biology is better equipped to apprehend the relationship between the brain-body and mind. We can thus consider the phenomenology and ontology of experience as it relates to *all* biological forms, not just human. Questions like, what's it like to be a bat, can now be more meaningfully responded to.
A similar trend in semiotic theory, from the human-specific (Charles Sanders Peirce) to the more general biosemiotic (Jakob von Uexküll), likewise expands our understanding of the nature of consciousness. A philosophy of biology would do well to factor in biosemiotic theory, as it was von Uexküll who inspired Humberto Maturana in his contributions to systems theory.
A phenomenology and ontology of experience as it applies to *all* creatures? It follows as self-evident. Experiences intercepted by bodies wire neuroplastic, DNA-entangled brains, and this implies that consciousness can only ever be subjective, there is no objective "true" way of interpreting reality. This relates to the nature of being, the "knowing how to be" that applies to all life.
A major role of philosophy in science relates to asking the right questions. A philosophy of biology would likewise take seriously the big problems that include entropy, binding and the mind-body problem. It promises new ways of interpreting life and the nature of reality. It sets the stage for a much-needed Copernican revolution in the life sciences.

To me Philosophy of Biology is a little undefined at the moment. It's scope seems a kind of blurry. I find it difficult to understand how someone could believe in the existence of God and at the same time believes in the Darwinist evolution. Is it that God who was so wise and powerful to have started the existence of things suddenly became senile and frail so that evolutionary processes had to take over and just bring about anything that chance and accident could produce without any guiding input from God? That doesn't make sense in any shape or form.
What appear to be similarities and slight variations among 'biological units' or entities which are always interpreted by evolutionists as key evidence of the evolutionary process or ladder, point instead to something else. This is comparable to a mass production factory, say iPhone factory. The core technology is the same for all iPhones with slight variations for every new set of iPhones produced. Do the similarities and slight variations point to self evolving iPhones? We know the answer is NO. The case with iPhones applies to all mass production factories of cars, television sets, etc. And this applies as well to the biodiversity around us. So clearly, these similarities and variations direct us to one creator with a carefully guided core technology.
Regarding the sudden emergence and extinction of some species, there could be multiple reasons for this without the involvement of any evolutionary processes. Take note that living organisms are autonomous, selfrefueling biological machines. This is high tech, the kind craved by robotics. Just the kind of technology one would sensibly expect a cosmic creator to have! Those biological machines like dinosaurs may have been brought about in certain geological age(s) for particular purposes and were decommissioned when the purpose(s) where achieved. That is one possibility.
So I too am wondering what specific direction Philosophy of Biology is headed.

The ONLY purpose of not only philosophy and bioligy, but of all knowledge as such, is the SATISFACTION OF THE NEEDS OF ALL BEINGS.
We don't need a system of knowledge to declare anything positive as impossible and/or anything negative as inevitable. But that is exactly what Experimental and Observational Science practically does at present.
This is because it inherited the fatalistically destructive FAITH that an uncontrollable external force controls all events in this universe, from the traditional religions it is supposed to have discarded.
And it also lacks a purpose of its own and assumes NATURE (practically its own substitute for GOD of traditional religions) is CHAOCRATIC ( think ENTROPY).
    But consider the following possibility:
Nature has a positive purpose, but it doesn't promote it as it would only reveal the scaling formulae for rendering life permanent amd positive only to those ones among humans that follow unique VIRTUES (aesthetics, ethics, morals) regarding the functions of the 3 entities:
    1) Plants (aesthetics: facilitate SURVIVAL of all beings by enabling all plants to bear fruits suitable for animal and human consumption)
    2) Animals (ethics: JUSTICE to all animals through designing fodder that enable productive function of the interior of the earth, thereby eradicating predation)
    3) Other humans (morals: HAPPINESS through coimplementing the designs for terraforming and occupying other stars and planets in productive cooperation with animals).
This places NATURE as a flexible entity that can be made divine or evil depending only on our own activities in it.
Thus, the purpose free mathematical patterns oriented detection of LAWS OF NATURE based Experimental and Observational Science FATALISM is no less harmful than the GOD based FATALISM of traditional religions it replaced.

@@matterasmachine Is true that the universe is beautifully simple. But we talk about philosophy of biology because the things you give for granted arent supposed to be so. for example a spider knows how to make his web without following classes ... Is written in DNA ? Page 4853 of the DNA "how to make webs for newbies" ? how is coded that information ? IS physical ? is archetypal ? are information at quantum level ? how that started ? possible that by random chance dna with information was created ?

@@francesco5581 simple. everything in this universe is robot. And always was. Including elementary particles. Quantum mechanics describes robots, not waves. That’s why action is discrete. So dna of spider stores algorithm and your too. We are all robots and your wishes are your current objectives generated for you by instincts. All philosophy is created by our algorithm too.

Don’t agree at all with any mixture of theology with biology. As a neutoethologist you can interpret any behavior, and trait without theology BS.

Biology is about monkeys who have not awaken to their own reality while physicists from the last 100 years have scaled great heights given us quantum mechanics and cosmology, realizing one can not reduce the whole to some of it's parts like reductionist and materialist would. Matter is inherently paradoxical, "epigenetics which no one really knows how it works, is the management system that the cell program in some sense has to make the judgment" according to Steve Davies.

I think all fields of knowledge should be combined and genuinely considered before being discarded I think every field of knowledge needs to have some sort of proof behind it that is specific to its field and then to find the truth about the universe people should then try to combine the different fields of knowledge to make ultimate field of study to find the truth of reality.

      You mean darwinian BS.
Only an intelligence ( like Man) makes, maintains, improves, evolves, fine tunes Abstract & physical Functions.
A Function ... is a process .. with set purpose, form, design & properties ( information).
All Functions ... possess & require ... information to exist & to function.
And only an intelligence ( like Man) can extract information from a Function ... and ... make Functions with information.
Anything ... that has clear & obvious purpose, form, design, processes and properties ... is a Function and can only be made by an intelligence.
A machine is a physical Function.
The three types of machines are mechanical, electrical & molecular ( LIFE)
It is a fact of science .. that nature & natural processes can never make & operate the simplest mechanical or electrical machine.
It is complete bullshit ... that nature & natural processes over billions of years can make a simple molecular ( biological) machine, and make this machine more complex.
There is absolutely ZERO evidence that nature & natural processes can make & operate an abstract or physical Function. And yet evolution, abiogenesis & 13.7 billion year old Universe ... is religiously believed to be a fact ... and that Man discover how Nature did he impossible. lol. Dingbats.

Take a book of Biology and a book with the doctrine of any religion. Put a bowl next to these books.
Read some pages from the Biology book. Read some pages from the religion book.

Alright I see how you do your analysis...that is the most flawed way to analyze anything.
Just casually drifting through the pages of anything makes it absurd...(I am a non-dualist Hindu, so I can't speak for Abrahamic religions). There are layers of iconography, allegories, and Multiple levels of meanings...especially in my case requires some years of practical experimentation and experiencing the said stuff making sure you aren't giving into self-deception nor any sort of fallacious logical chain of thought. Requires a deep and genuine look at these things with the attitude...whatever be the conclusion of whether this is true or false i will accept it and not let my bias get in the way(i was materialistic then) otherwise, i would be living a lie. Your jokes suck ny the way. Well, I am foremost a physics Major with MSc in it. currently working on my Ph.D. thesis. Well it's surprising that when one goes deep into the implications of equations of physics and the philosophical underpinnings of it, it blows the arrogance of your face.
For example Physical realism has been proved false as both local and non-local realism; bell's and Leggett's inequality respectively been violated, proving one of the core tenets of physicalism(sort of extended physicalism (ontological and epistemological)) has been proven false. Also Argument from epistemology i.e All knowledge presupposes the mind, also nails this(i can write a whole explanation on this but heck this is a YT comment).
Even evolutionary biology and Game theory applied to verdicality of vision (a Paper by MIT scientist Donald D Hoffman) mathematically proves the verdicality of vision or of any senses is 0% giving much crdence to the indirect realism or more importantly Representational theory of mind. Again a nail on the coffin for materialism, Even neuroscience experiments like cutting of corpus callosum generate a dissociation of consciousness into two different and unique consciousness with two points of centers of origin. Also in certain cases a rise in awareness while the neurological activity decreases show instances in which identity theory completely fails to explain. Also in principle materialism can't explain consciousness as non-mental matter from some specific intricate configuration of these DEAD matter generating mentality...well the only that's possible is strong emergence but that's appealing to magic...while weak emergence in principle itself fails before getting started.
So then we are left with dualism and panpsychism...well former has interaction problem and latter has recombination problem...then we are left with idealism..i.e consciousness is fundamental and all is derivative of consciousness. Its parsimonious and coherent and also takes away the hard problem of consciousness that other ontologies fail to reconcile. For detailed work on this refer to Bernardo Kastrup's Analytic Idealism, He has 10 published papers on this and he got his PhD in Philosophy for this from a prestigious college in Europe. Its also available book format as "The Idea Of the World".
Here Hinduism is built upon the ontological premise of consciousness is fundamental. Through rigorous studies that picture is now clearer than ever.
i am just gonna stop there for now,
