The Ice Worm is such an awesome Leviathan! When I first encountered it it sure as hell gave me a scare. Seeing the dead one is also really cool! Gotta say tho I am happy that thing can not swim haha.. that would be super scary. Also its design is so cool! I built a small base in the ice desert just because the Ice Worm is near there haha!
@@iAletho there’s one thing more relaxing… making a 69,420-meter-deep sea base and living along with the void chechelirates (forgot how it’s spelled) in the void
While it technically doesn't swim... I wouldn't say that it can't. The way its horn melts the ice as it burrows, it basically _does_ swim, but through ice instead of water (and yes, I am aware this is an oversimplification).
I suppose nothing in the games lore contradicts the trailer so in theory it could swim, we just don't see any of that in game or in the data banks, so I suppose it can be left open to interpretation! :)
Remember, this is an alien planet. None of the life here has to follow any biological design conventions found on earth. This thing was likely named the “Ice Worm” because of its visual resemblance to invertebrates on our world.
Very few times have I liked ending scenes where people point out their other videos. You are one of the very few aletho, because you actually make it really entertaining and engaging lol :)
I wanna do work in marine biology and ive always admired subnautica and all the made-up creatures it has in it, it was always fun to read all the information the PDA gives you but this series feels like im watching a documentary and it feels SO GOOD. Tysm for the amazing content and i hope you will make a video for the shadow leviathan aswell❤
Even though the ice worm is a great idea and creature, its implementation in the game is awful: first of all it's restrained in a little area instead of being more present and there's also the fact that its attack forces you to get down the snow fox so that you don't have a chance to move away. Still great video, as always!
I think subnautica 3 should be about an investigation team sent to investigate all of the disappearances and the rest of the planet. If they go this route of story the devs can make dlc leading to different story events and biomes. It would be nice to go back to the crater and arctic areas as well as explore newer ones. Even let us see the void area
I absolutely love these videos!! There’s so underrated! I’m so interested in the biology of Subnautica and especially the leviathans! Good job as always! 🎉😊
The ice worm was an awesome concept but I feel like it was a missed opportunity, the ice worm is only really surprising the first time it jumps you and it does such little damage that you can easily complete all the land sections just by running through on foot. Still a really cool creature tho. I’m also starting to think you have a secret pengling fuel operation going on..
It could be that both the ice worm and shadow Leviathan might be related to the ancient skeleton found in the lost river. The holes we see in the skeleton's side could be because it had spike like things like the ice worm or crab like legs like the shadow Leviathan has
brilliant video and research, but i must say the ice worm isn't really as scary when you can make a beeline across its biome to the point of interest on foot and be absolutely fine - potentially needing a medkit or two
Honestly the design is very good and the smooth animations make it much more better one of my favorite leviathan, but what kills it for me is the gameplay.I would love to see these ice worms chaseing us throughout land and water.
For real i saw both movies and read the books, sand worm: Ice WORM, Thumper from dune: THUMPER from below zero, both blind worms in the ground that are attracted to sound
Perhaps after all leviathans are covered. Then maybe you could cover other, unique creatures. Like what you did with the Warper. Maybe the sea monkey, squidshark, cuddlefish, crabsquids, etc.
I had a dream once that the area that the ice worm lives in was instead a very deep pit filled with water and at the bottom was an old research facility. The area was only accessed by land and kind of resembled a caldera. It went about 900M deep and was super dark except for the slight blue hue from the ice surrounding it. The area had two ice worms that would swim around and occasionally dig into the ice. I remember that the area was important because it held a code that would allow you to get blueprints for something important. It also had tunnels dug out in the surrounding ice because of the ice worm but you weren't safe in those because the ice worm would still dig into the ice and try to get you. The dream instilled a deep fear into me. I also had another dream about the aurora but that's off topic.
I think the idea of the ice worm being first of in more places but secondly, hunting larger sea creatures by launching them into the air and letting them smash into the ground or the surface of the water, if we had gotten the flying leviathan it could even try to snatch the ice worms pray mid air and sometimes accidentally be caught by the ice worm inpatiently and excitedly launching up to catch its prey. This might even save you from an ice worm death if you qre lucky (and are on a viechle so you dont turn into dust from the launch itself) by being caught by what i now name Flappy, Flappy the snow bat
My theory is that it is a relative of the reaper leviathan because it has the tail shape and doesn’t have eyes. Both traits are found in the reaper leviathan. They also both use echolocation to find prey
I’m surprised the resemblance to duna’s sandworm wasn’t mentioned. Specially with the way the thumper functions similarly to the sandworm “bait” described in the books and now shown in the movies
Another way to avoid the Ice Worm? The Prawn Suit. It’s nigh-indestructible to Ice Worms and can for some reason break the goddamn sound barrier with it’s thrusters and grapple arm on land.
I think that the ice work is the only leviathan that actually scares me, the sea dragon and the ghosts stress me out, and the reapers are now just fun to fight. To be honest tho, I wish I could play subnautica for the first time again and have that absolute terror on my first reaper encounter. Edit: yes, I forgot about the shadow and the cheliceralte leviathan. The shadow also still stresses me a little bit ( but not much because I have scanned it twice ).
I don't know if this is still a thing today, but a year ago if you took the Prawn Suit on land the Ice Worm couldn't harm you. It could try, but its attacks couldn't hit you. Granted this also meant that there were some tunnels that you couldn't get into because you were too big in the suit, but since you're unaffected by the cold while in it AND the Ice Worm couldn't hit me I thought it was worth the trade. I haven't seen an Ice Worm able to hit a player in a cave/tunnel since TWO years ago, so whatever.
The thumpers are kind of like that one device from half life 2 that kept antilions from coming in a certain range. Maybe they took inspirations from half life 2?

That or it can swim but is much more proficient in land. Still a good thing that it prefers land over water though.

As a superheated but also frozen bug creature, it's a bit like D&D's remorhaz, but that's more centipede than worm. Vague cousins, at least.
