Another common theme in young, talented fighters of old (and today) who could have had it all if it wasn't for their vice. Another fascinating video Rich. Thanks for sharing!
From the sound of it he wasn’t a religious huckster..just a conflicted soul. Foster’s religious conversion reminds me of a fictional fighter a writer named P.G. Wodehouse created. The character “Battling Billson” appears in three short stories in the Wodehouse book “Ukridge”. Wodehouse who had boxed as an amateur, creates a very sympathetic character in Billson and also gives you a wonderful sense of the boxing world in England in the early 1900’s. You might enjoy it.
@@paulmaupin7570 Not that well read..lol..but have read a lot of Wodehouse. His books are so good and so funny I have a whole shelf of them. You’re welcome!
Great job Rich. A real history lesson for young fans. My uncle told me about Vince when I was young. Jack Hurley was a character. You may have read the beautifully written 3 volume bio of him. As you present Hurley was high on Vince but could not control him. Great boxing writer and one of the authors of MASH, WC Heinz wrote a terrific profile of Hurley in his book Once They Heard the Cheers, published in 1978. Hurley is buried in Fargo ND. In about 1985 or 86 I met and spoke to the daughter and grandson of WW Billy Patrolle , Hurleys most famous fighter. They lived in central Wisconsin. His daughter had good stories of Hurley. Bill trusted him completely and Hurley never let him down
@@RichtheFightHistorian yes, Hurley called women creatures and other not nice names. He was the match maker at Chicago Stadium in the late 40’s early 50’s. He lived in an apartment building on the north side near where I grew up. He was match maker for Zale v Graziano. He begged Arthur Wirtz and the Norris family to film the fight but they refused thinking it would take away from the gate. Films of big fights were often shown in movie theaters before the featured movie and Wirtz thought it would hurt the gate. Because of that we are deprived of perhaps one of the 3 or 4 most vicious MW fights of all time. Certainly a rival to Hearns v Hagler. I’m amused when folks make lists to put on TH-cam of the best rounds of boxing. They only can show those that were filmed so many young enthusiasts have no idea. As a film collector any film of Greb in an actual fight or Robinson v LaMotta one through 5 or Robinson v Kid Gavilan would be very valuable even in this time of boxing’s decline. Also film of a young Graziano would be valuable. I met a guy now dead that saw Graziano v Billy Arnold. That’s the fight that made Graziano. My friend said he never saw such a fight. A young Graziano was a force of nature.
Great stuff Rich. I didn't know of Foster, but he sounded very conflicted & possibly suffering with some kind of mental health issue, that came to the fore, especially when under the influence of alcohol. Thank you for the upload. Always appreciated. Bless up bro 👊
What a huge disappointment! That kid had it all and would have been Champ if he tried harder outside the ring. This shows the true battle of Good and evil that I believe everybody in life goes through to some extent. But this story is one of the worst that I have heard of.
What an interesting original story of an obscure fighter.we all know about famous big names but this is a unique and fascinating look into the boxers that labored in obscurity.. great job rich
Lots of guys like this.. It's truly in the hands of the trainer to know when to cut him off.. Unfortunately his trainer only saw dollar signs and not self harming signs. So many stories like this to anyone who's grown up as a fighter. Gr8 show. God Bless 🙏.
Strange and tragic. He had natural talent physically but needed to be molded and refined mentally. A tragic end to someone who didn’t know much and didn’t know what he was getting into
Hey Rich , love your work , take a look at Jimmy Carruthers born 1929, Australias first recognised world champion , could make a very interesting video , Cheers
Good stuff as usual. I have a few suggestions for you. A couple of Sonny Liston opponents, Bert Whitehurst (in broadcasts it is mentioned he held several college degrees and was studying to be a doctor, I don't know if he ever became one) and Ed Sanders (1952 Olympic Gold Medalist, had short pro career from a tragic death in the ring, beat Whitehurst). Ismael Laguna is another fighter I'm interested in (Lightweight champion, I'm sure you're familiar with him, you recently did a video over one if his opponents, Mando Ramos).
You sure find 'em Rich. I'm stealing the "He hadnt enough brains for a headache" line. Hurley has a "oh, whats he gone and don now?!!' face... lol My dad was a Preacher too, but a tad tamer... another great vid from the Champ.
Really interesting docu, Foster was indeed a very strange guy, gifted, but ultimately very flawed. There's are definitely some strange characters in boxing (and the world in general) thanks for posting Rich.
The only Vince Foster I knew of before now, was the Vince Foster who committed "suicide" back in the mid-90s and who had been a friend of the clintons.
One of many "suicides" that are part of the Clinton body count. The list keeps growing one recent Clinton victim died in a "weightlifting accident" and another was deemed "suicide" with 2 bullets to the back of the head. The most blatant was Seth Rich. He was a DNC staffer that was disgruntled about Hillary cheating Bernie in the 2016 primary. He died in a "mugging" where nothing was taken.
From what I'm reading he had a dual personality a different person during the day but at night he became a devil from the pit of Hell. Remember the series on TV SBYBOL? It sounds like a dual personality complex
Foster was a character, but Art Diamond takes the cake for being a strange boxer. He had a very messy personal life and was connected to all sorts of criminal organizations, etc.
Shame about him,he had great potential,...but maybe wasn't a very nice person I don't mean to speak ill of the dead,no offence meant....just a waste that's all.Dave 🇬🇧
Hey rich I think Irish Doyle Baird a middle weight out of Akron ohio would be a good story I know how much you like boxing to look his story would be intresting
This was really interesting, I'm really enjoy the content. I could listen to you talk about boxing history for hours, thanks Rich.
I appreciate that, Jason. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing this. I had never heard of him before. Wow! Dead at 22. What a waste.
Oh oh oh!

The 3-volume set of books on Jack Hurley are a must for any serious boxing historian.
Thanks for amazing content Rich
I noticed a lot of these Fighters tend to not commit themselves to boxing. Seems like that's a running theme with a lot of these guys.THX 4 upload ✌️
Thanks rich I enjoyed it keep them coming.
Thanks Felix,, will do!
I think Francis Botha deserves a documentary sometime. These old fighters were just fascinating, a loss never defined them. Such a tragedy

My pleasure, Nick.
He sounded to me like a typical drunken Indian. It's no secret they can't handle booze.
Really great story. quite interesting.

Thanks, Paul. I'll have to look into Carruthers.
Lots of people like that. You just never hear of them.
Foster had brain damage early on in life. Usually mixes in with substance abuse and as well as weird personalities.
Another source states he went into the back of a Cadillac and there were 2 women in the car, who both died.
Good stuff as usual.

This man needs a movie.

Yeah me too. After watching this if that was my name I'm changing it at this point.

Thanks. I'll add Miske to the to do list.
That would be awesome. He has the greatest/most unbelievable story in all of sports.
Thank you my guy
Very Interesting bio. Haven’t heard of him but seemed like a very troubled soul. Love your work Rich. Keep them coming
Thanks, Wood. Will do.
From what I'm reading he had a dual personality a different person during the day but at night he became a devil from the pit of Hell. Remember the series on TV SBYBOL? It sounds like a dual personality complex
Maybe. Definitely had some delusional mental health issues.
What a beast
Brilliant, I subbed.
I love these docs
Is he related to Bob Foster? Their styles were similar and they both had Irish and Native American ancestry
No. He had a younger brother that did go into boxing but had a losing record.
Tremendous!!!!
My mom used to call guys like this a "bum".
Great blogs rich
Thanks, luigi.
Wow wow wow imagine you are 15 and you fight Rocky Graziano and he wins the decision... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Foster was a character, but Art Diamond takes the cake for being a strange boxer. He had a very messy personal life and was connected to all sorts of criminal organizations, etc.
This isn't a contest, biff.
Psssh.
"Foster is so stupid that he could not sing Home Sweet Home if he was standing inside his own front door." hahaha
Most of the early fighters are of Irish decent great to see and know but foster was a bit of a mad man😂!🇮🇪🥊
Shame about him,he had great potential,...but maybe wasn't a very nice person I don't mean to speak ill of the dead,no offence meant....just a waste that's all.Dave 🇬🇧
Seems like he had a dual personality. Coupled with low level intelligence and poor impulse control.
Poor kid......coudda had it all.....
Stanley ketchel and Andrew golota come to mind with wasted talent

so sad.
James 4:15 For that ye ought to say If the LORD will we shall live and do this or that
Sounds the guy was undiagnosed . . . OR just hard headed!

Foster had a very unfair start with a horrible life. Seems like Foster had his demons and Hurley had his(manipulative for financial gain).
There Will Be Blood.
Fire water strikes again
No Clinton jokes here?
Beware of the preacher man.
What a waste Rich 🤑
I blame the Clintons...
