IF you still need advise...i have had Stapelias look that bad, or worse! and now are alive and big blooming plants. Have you seen THIS one in bloom?....EVER? Is it 'Gigantea', with the HUGE yellow bloom with fine red/maroon lines on the bloom? Or is it another variety? do you know? Where do you live? That will determine the amount of sun you can give it. But that is THE most important thing to make it thrive. IF you can,.... put it outside, in morning direct sun, that will help you SO much! OR are you only able to grow it inside on a window ledge? If so, it has to get as much direct sun on it as possible. If it is use to being in shade/darker areas, watch for sunburn in the beginning. But as sad as it looks, I would risk it! Go EASY on the water....you are' killing it with kindness'...once it is rooted, just water lightly when it is VERY dry. The soil is better than whatever you had it in, That stuff was horrible. I think i saw orchid bark in the soil? That will kill that plant VERY easily. I grow hundreds of these plants, here in south Fla., and have gotten plants from traders, in soil like that, and they looked like that plant. It holds to much water. SO....if it is growing now, in the new soil, leave it be, but go EASY on the water. And give it some fert. A light dose, 1/2 strength of whatever it says on your package of fertilizer. A bloom booster fert. will help it bloom. The simplest advise is....light water, VERY fast draining soil, light fertilizer, and depending on where you live, LOTS of direct sun. It could be only morning sun, or all day direct sun. The further north you live, the more direct sun it needs. And if it is inside, give it all you can!!! To get growth and BLOOMS:) That is why the plant is so limp/sad. (Besides the lack of roots). It needs sun and good soil. BUT if it is growing now, give it sun! It is a cactus/succulent...thus SUNLIGHT!! :) Hope this helps, let me know if it is alive,rooting, and where you live. That will be of the most help, in offering you advise. GET RID of that tray it is sitting on, that catches water. Once you water it, let it drain out in your sink for an hour or so, so it isnt sitting in water. It will rot FAST! Then put it back on a tray/or something, to protect the surface it is on,if it is inside. NEVER let it sit in water. Hope tis helps you more, I see in one reply, you say it is growing, and has new growth. This si the time to give it sun,to get it ready to bloom. I re olanted it and the root is very long! It looks very much alive though, unlike the stem, it looks very turgid, do you think my stapelia can make it?

The key is watering a drip tray and only once the soil has completely dried up. also, i never have pebbles on top of the soil with mine, that way you can see if the plant is too wet
+Drobium77 Thanks a lot for the advice! :) The Stapelia is doing very well, most of the pieces have new growths. The soil seems to work very well. The water runs through it quickly, then sits in the tray and is transported back up through the soil in a few hours.

Aloha, I'm here in hawaii. Stapelia or start fish cactus is free they grow wild almost everywhere in the forest or up to the valley. Stapelia very easy to grow in my garden i just put it outside and then full of the sun everyday. I will watering when the soil is completely dried up. Stapelia has beautiful flower will blooming on march. Right now I have a lot of this cactus in the garden, so I gift it away to my friends or neighbourhood who loves cactus😘🙏🌵

I was going to recommend Lyn's channel Desert Plants of Avalon, but I see you already know her channel. :) She's the cacti and succulents queen :), and she has an amazing collection and useful videos on repotting and caring for them. I have never had an stapelia, but I like to watch videos about cacti and succulents, and from what I remember from those videos, your choice of soil sound very good. Oh, sorry...dumb me! You say at the beginning , that you have a Grandiflora! It is the fuzzy red bloom. One of my favorites. (It is very early in the morning as I wrote my advise), and i missed that you put a rock ON the drain hole. Shame,shame!! It needs to drain. So my going LIGHT on the water advise is even more important. Let it dry out deep down, before watering again. That rock is blocking a lot of water from escaping. IF you wanted to go really picky on growing,.....you could buy distilled/purified water at your local grocery store, for $1 a gallon? Chlorine is not kind to Stapelias. Just an extra step, if you want to try it, or mix your Fert, in that water, and then you know how much food you are giving it. Adding the perlite is the best thing you did. That is why it is now growing. I add that to all my 'cactus soils'. The Grandiflora is a bit picky about its care. BUT you got it to bloom on a southern window sill? THAT is amazing! My Grandifloras are very hard to get to bloom, and I love its flower SO much. They grow like weeds, but flowers are few. I think it is to humid here in Ft.Laud. it likes the drier air. The humidity tends to make them get tip rot. Can you post a short video of how it looks now? And again, light water, LOTS of sun, light fertilizer. DON'T let it sit in water! And if you have had it 10+ years, and it still lived, and bloomed for you, in that old bad soil, and lack of care, this shows you how sturdy Stapelias can be:) Given the right simple care, they will grow fast and bloom every year. Usually late spring /early summer. BUT they can put out a bloom anytime of the year. Where are you located? It seems that southern window must give it enough sun to bloom, so that means it is enough to give it life! Congrats!!!
I see you know a lot about stapelias. I would be really happy if you could help me :) My stapelia orbea variegata is having problems with flower buds. It bloomed once In early summer with giant flower (for that variety) and it has grown many branches in full light outside (so I know it's doing great). Only problem is that it hasn't bloomed since early summer even though is producing tons of buds, which are regularly dieing off in early stage. Do you know why? And also, I think that that one flower that has bloomed in early summer will produce fruit, so will I save plants energy for blooming if I cut that one branch?

It's 2020 now what happened? Did bloom?
No, it didn't, unfortunately. It's still alive, but it got overgrown bei a bunch of Kalanchoe plantlets. I must separate them on occasion.

No Bumlebee, I grow my cacti and succulents separately. Almost all get a cold winter rest and some of them start already to bloom.
