Ariana actually got her start on Broadway! She was in 13 with Liz Gillies before they went to do Victorious together. Shes also a MASSIVE Wicked fan so I definitely think she’ll kill it
I agree with you that we shouldn't expect a scene for scene adaptation from the Broaodway show to the film. This is probably the most nerve-wracking thing for both Cynthia and Arianna, is that everyone knows the big shoes they are stepping into, that was iconically filled by Kristen Chenowith and Idina Menzel. I'm really looking forward to seeing this on Thanksgiving and you guys are right, the production design is really cool. Can't wait to see this film.
@@MrStGeorgeIllawarra you should read ScreenRant's article on the reason why Disney might have turned Moana 2 into a movie instead of the previously announced series. Spoiler alert: It comes down to how much people watched the movie in 2023. But you're partially right. Nobody 'needs' Moana 2. But then nobody 'needs' any movie. They're an entertaining luxury, just like sport. Nobody really 'needs' that either. The things we really 'need' is a pretty short list, but I suspect you'll disagree with me on this. Unless you picked your TH-cam username ironically.
I completed 14 of L. Frank Bank's novels before I first watched Return to Oz, as my Da was an avid fan and read them aloud to us as children. Gregory Maguire's reinworking of that masterwork was my airplane book on my flight home Sophomore year from college in 1996. My friend from college who was visiting Chicago for her Tenth Reunion in 1999 took me to the touring show in Chicago as a "Thank you" gift for picking her up at the airport as I lived in the Chicago area and we both were fans of the book. The Behind the Curtain Tour was fun as we learned much about the production but I was sad my favorite parts of the book were (bedessariky) cut from the Musical. Hopefully by expanding it into two parts they will include more of what had to be edited out of the Musical. When Son of a Witch came out in 2005 I read it anxiously and was disappointed by the directions Maguire took and stopped the series after the sequel. I think there are 4 novels in the series.
I've seen the show twice and might see it again later this year when it comes to town. My two favorite songs are What is This Feeling? and For Good. I have also read both books, Wicked and Son of a Witch
Musicals are difficult to sell in Hollywood, only made worse after Cats, which was in production at the same time as this adaptation, before it was put on hold for Covid-19. I am certain they are hoping to sell the movie on the visuals, and performmances, not the music.
I am not a fan of splitting a musical into two parts. I'd rather just get the 3+ hour musical with intermission like the old days, but I know that is probably a nonstarter for the average movie goer. if the only alternative is something like Mean Girls that cuts a lot of the songs to get the runtime down to two hours, I prefer two movies. Once they're both out people will just experience them together anyway.
Also, I think it's less about what the fans would put up with and more about the studios getting maximum showings in a day. If I can binge through a season of Blue Eye Samurai I can sit through a four hour Wicked
@@MrNathansdad You're right that is probably the bigger factor. But unlike other long movies released last year in theaters I'm sure they want this to be a big family movie (since the musical already feels very much like a live action Disney animated feature) and I don't know if parents would want to take their kids to a 4-hour Oz movie.
Never saw the musical or read the book. However, anything that expands on the Wizard of Oz storyline, characters I am for it! Love it! Definitely will check it out for the holiday season! 🦁👧🏼🌈🌪️🏠
So many movies and other are being destroyed by adding a certain group of people, just to make them shut up, other than the original castings. I'd never give a horrible acting child anything, but discipline.
I've not read the book or seen/listened to the musical, but I am keen to see this. The only thing I wonder about is whether this will be suitable for a 9 year old.
Really ? Cause if you are saying that about the whole teaser you are just being a troll talking absolute bull! Otherwise, be serious and actually give explanation rather than total disrespect to the entire teaser where there are certainly at minimum some good elements.

Ariana started in Broadway not on tv so she knows what she's doing guys. She's gonna kill it! 🎉
i had so much faith going into this before the teaser, and now i have even MORE faith in this movie after watching it.
Ariana Grande actually went backstage after seeing Wicked on Broadway and met Kristin Chenoweth. Now she's playing Glenda. Full circle.
The "I am" was a joke in the musical as she was play acting surprise like her skin being green was surprising to her as well.
It looks beautifully epic!!! I’ve never seen the Broadway show, but I’m very much excited to see the movie.
The whole point was that the wicked witch isn't necessarily evil but she had to be evil in order to help people she had to be the villain essentially
I think they’ll show more singing when the official trailer comes out
Marc Platt is actually a producer on the stage version as well.
I saw a production of Wicked a few years ago with my mom at a local theater and to this day my mom and I still say Defying Gravity is our favorite.
... this is adding more from the Gregory McGuire book back into the story
I take it you did not actually read the novel?
@@ChienaAvtzon No one is saying they are going full novel dark, but they are adding bits from the book that aren't in the stage production.

😭 💗 they look great... im so happy for ariana. And man, the chills i had hearing Cynthia sing "defying gravity"
It looks amazing visually but this and Moana 2 same day oh boy but wicked looks amazing I can’t wait

This Wicked film looks fantastic‼️
John M Chu did step up sequels
He also did In The Heights
New on Wicked, so please clarify it for me: is the book/musical both a origin story for the Witch of the West plus a retelling of "The Wizard of Oz"?
Think of it as a prequel to Wizard of Oz
