I made a video How to open dried oil paint tubes the easiest way. As shown there, my lighter is invaluable. Then once I've applied the vaseline, the lighter and pliers aren't necessary but I wouldn't be without them in my studio. Sometimes I find second hand oil tubes that need 'the treatment'.

Love your videos! I have the same type of plyers on my paints table. The idea of the paper-roll palette is brilliant... 😊😊😊😊

I'm going to add the freezer paper idea to my work area. I love this idea. Another great video James. Love your sense of humor.

@@DtroitDinosaur Oh yeah, a mud lamp is a small clay bowl filled with oil and a wick in it. Your aluminum lamp shade resembles the look and shape of a mud lamp. I think that's why it's called that.

Love your videos. You're the Alton Brown of artists. Although I don't really paint I've been a full time freelance designer/illustrator since 1987. I work in mixed media; markers, pastels, colored pencils, etc and also digital. A few non-art supplies/art supplies that I find handy are cotton balls/cotton swabs for blending pastels and cleaning triangles, ship curves and other drawing aids, a companion to this is 91% isopropyl alcohol for the same purpose, sandpaper (medium and fine grit) for fine-tuning a pencil tip and finally my favorite - decades ago I bought a TV cart which I eventually "Frankensteined" by adding a backsplash around the top and a few extra slide out shelves for ellipse/circle templates, ship curves and such. I also put pegboard on the back side of the stand to hang rulers, triangles, clipboards, tape rolls and other things. These carts are great because they are fairly small and are usually on wheels so they can be easily moved around and best of all can be found really cheap - even free - on places like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and eBay. It's amazing how many different tools and supplies these can hold in a small, compact space. I will try to add a photo of it here if possible. Keep up the good work!

Hey thanks Larry for the kind words. What's the old saying necessity is the mother of invention. There's a part of me that loves that moment of "I wish this would do this..." and suddenly you have an idea to build or make something to solve your problem. It's all about streamlining your work to make it flow better which I think allows one to be more creative. Thank you for sharing these ideas. I may have to steal that cart idea! By the way you mentioned cotton balls. It reminded me of a supply we always had on hand in the studio I worked at in Detroit. I haven't seen then in years but we used to keep rolls of cotton on hand. Maybe they were medical or possible for use in a dark room. They were about as big around as a roll of TP and about 7 inches long. Cotton wipes rolled up with blue paper. They were great for cleaning things with Bestine solvent. Thanks again Larry great comment!

Oh yes and I agree, sandpaper is a must for any studio. So many uses.

I use droppers for adding water to watercolors or other water soluble paints, just a wee bit to a lot, so I don't keep dipping the brush. I use a lot of what you mentioned already. I've used vodka to clean with (one of my least favorite spirits to drink, ha), and sometimes salt or baking soda when I have stubborn inks on pens or palettes.

Hey Scooby that is a great idea with the dropper. I plan to mess around with watercolor again in the near future. Totally going to try that! Thanks for the great comment.
