This is simultaneously the hottest track about a genome-editor, the best cover of Mr. Sandman, *and* one of the top 3 best genre fusions. Serious s-tier stuff here.
And a acapella so good that at points I forgot there were no instruments
Typo it’s SSS tier
You could say, he Crisr Cas9'd the fuck out of it.
S+++ tier if you want my opinion bud , bcs this is actually a big brain time song Ngl

I've been assigned the task of writing a CRISPR-Cas9 song for the youngest visitors at the museum where I work. Naturally I googled "CRISPR song" just to see if there was anything else out there.
I'm handing in my letter of resignation tomorrow.
LMAO
Maybe Tim could help you.
@@annesmith9642 I've actually just finished the song. Thankfully it's in Swedish, so nobody here will ever know just how awful it turned out. 🤣

"incite a scene" in place of cytosine is some amazing wordplay
Rip guanine
"that one Nazarene" is a great turn of phrase too.
it really would in cytosine
"Outside our power and inside us all" is also a great line

Now that the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 has been awarded the Nobel Prize, this video should get revitalized and shared all over again!
Tim should have been invited to the Nobel ceremony to perform for the King of Sweden. Command performance, dude!
This one just keeps modifying itself into something stronger. Poetic, that!
acapellascience stop being so amazing, you make us mere mortals feel inadequate
This is some good musix for mah ears and brain
In a way it reminds me of Tom Lehrer's _"Clementine"_. It's fun to try and identify the different musical styles as they go past.
Your vids keep getting better and better, but the better they get the longer i think your dead or cant afford to make videos anymore.
+Kristopher Kohlmeier Au contraire, the more affordable this process becomes, the longer I take to do things right :P
I first discovered this song when I was 13 or 14. Back then I had no bio knowledge, and basically only listened to this song for the epic harmonies. However many years later, I am now a college student learning about CRISPR in my gen ed bio class, so I came back to this song to see if I understood it any more. The result is me going wildly back and forth between understanding and being even more confused than I already was. A recreation of me watching this:
"Encoding for a specific protein" - oh yeah, cuz the RNA guide's really easy to program, I bet it searches out specific sequences that make proteins, yeah this makes kind of sense
"Make a few snips at this coded locus" - yeah yeah yeah i'm actually understanding this!
"You work so well inside a streptococcus" - aaaaaand you lost me
I'm sure you'll get there, Molly.
Haha, you'll get there. The cas9 that was developed into the gene editing tool was from Streptococcus pyrogens and it works beautifully inside the bacteria to target and kill the bacteriophage trying to infect it.
All I know is streptococcus is a bacteria that causes strep
I'm 14 right now
Afaik the theory behind how CRISPR works is based on observations of how the S. Pyogenes microbe does it naturally
This might be the best one you've made yet… and I'm not just saying that because I helped on it! :)
When amazing people work together, amazing things happen.
Then ask for credit in the video description. I usually don't hate on youtubers, even propagandists, but you mate are the exception. You arrogance makes me cringe everytime.
@@hfyaer he is credited in the video description. It says there: JOE HANSON, right after --- End Screen Links --- which, by the way, brings up the fact that he is also credited at the end of the video, too. Verbally, in fact

Holy cow, HOLY COW, it actually makes me mad to think about the fact that this video ONLY has 1.3 M views, with the insane amount of time and effort that went onto making it, from making the lyrics to recording every single little panel of the dozen that appear, it's crazy, Tim you're insanely talented. This video truly deserves at least 10 M views.

Just you wait.
Very true
There should be awards for people like you.
I watched this when it first came out, when I was still in high school, and I loved it but didn’t understand it at all. Now I’m a Neuroscience PhD student currently learning about CRISPR and I finally fully get it!! It’s been so fun to watch over the years of my science training 😄
Hi from Barcelona
Corinne, congrats for your Neuro PhD🎉
so many comments like this and it's so wholesome😭 i'm in my first year of uni studying bio so i like, vaguely understand it but not all the small references. can't wait to finally fully understand it one day :D
My best friend and I literally had this memorized in high school freshman biology and I’m back for the memories.
Wow. This song has so many layers of information in it, that it's in a league of its own.
I honestly don't know how this song doesn't have a billion views yet.
This song assisted my through my whole studies, from bachelor til masters now :) Chapeau!
HE RHYMED "AND CYTOSINE" WITH "INCITE A SCENE" PURE GENIUS
Wow that was MENTAL ! I can't begin to imagine the amount of work put into this... Brilliant job ! :)
I'm really glad you mentionned the ethical part of it as well, at some point around the middle of the song I was worried this would be a complete promotion of gene editing without any warning !... Nicely done, keep up the good work !
I was confident the ethical aspect would come up. Eminemium is pretty preachy^^
Responsability comes once you're a science guy, yo !
I'm glad Gattaca got mentioned too, a few seconds after I thought of it ^_^
Luckily for you, you don't need to imagine it! Go to acapellascience2 to watch the making of it!
Not gonna lie, this is by far the best video on the internet when it comes to explaining the CRISPR/Cas system. It explains everything in a catchy hot manner. even future possibilities and ethical problems.

Wow that was delicious on so many levels. Well done man, you are an amazing entertainerd.

In case you don't want to use the link, here's the lyrics:
CRISPR-Cas9
Bring me a gene
Encoding for a specific protein
Make a few snips at this coded locus
You work so well inside a streptococcus
Cas9
I'm so alone
Without your scissors in my chromosome
Cut me up and do it clean
CRISPR-Cas9 bring me a gene
CRISPR-Cas9
Keep me a gene
A viral sequence you've already seen
Chopped into bits and stored as genomic
With clustered repeats
That are palindromic
Cas9
Bind with this code
Use it to target infections of old
Immunized like a vaccine
CRISPR-Cas9 keep me a gene
CRISPR-Cas9
Cut me a gene
With a precision that I've never seen
Unzip a strand and interrogate it
Seek out your sequence until you locate it
Cas9
Lock into place
And do your job as endonuclease
Chop just like a guillotine
CRISPR-Cas9 cut me a gene
Snip snap!
CRISPR-Cas9
CRISPR-Cas9
CRISPR-Cas9
Bring me a gene
By commandeering my repair routine
A strand to match your severed location
For some homologous recombination
Cas9
Cheap and precise
Rewriting genomes from microbes to mice
And soon the humble human being
CRISPR-Cas9 bring me a gene
CRISPR-Cas9
Give us a gene
Give us a miracle like that one Nazarene
‘Cause giving the lame their legs and the blind their sight is
In view for dystrophy and retinitis
But CRISPR-Cas9
What if you fall
Outside our power and inside us all
That really could incite a scene
When this terrible wonderful power unsettling
Opens the door to unethically meddle
Is ev’ry congenital malady bettered
Sufficient to warrant genetics unfettered
To modify man in the manner of Gattaca
Raise up a mammoth or make a rattata
Dramatical medical means to eradicate aging
Or cancer or make a fanatic
A mass epidemic a weapon nefarious
Single mosquito to wipe out malaria
Send in a viral infection to ferry a
Cure to the cells of an HIV carrier
Freed of disease as we're free to uncover
What nature and accident failed to discover
And free to be other than
All that we ever have been
CRISPR-Cas9
CRISPR-Cas9
Oh CRISPR-Cas9
Bring us a gene
You wondrous ribonucleoprotein
You have the power to vanquish or save us
Who would have thought that the microbe that gave us
Cas9
S. pyogenes
The source of strep and flesh-eating disease
Housed this marvellous machine
Full of uses great and obscene
CRISPR-Cas9 bring us
Please don't sting us
Cas9 bring us a gene
With adenine
And thiamine
Incite a scene
Cas9 bring us a gene!

Ok, this is way beyond nice. This is ridiculous... This is brilliant musically, textually and graphically (Art Deco Voronoi, anyone?). Also the molecular shape of you contains some of the best explanatory animations of electron clouds I've seen to date. Extremey well done! I'm eagerly awaiting your next project and well on my way through your portfolio enjoying myself immensely. I would be mortified of making a mistake, if I were you, but given the detail and the broad knowledge displayed I guess there is a team behind this for fact checking? Cudo's to all.. When I work in the Doudna lab, I will show this to her because this was absolutely terrific!!!
The Batman Are you actually going to be working in the Doudna lab?
I REALLY HOPE SO AND I THINK I HAVE A PRETTY GOOD SHOT AT IT!! I'm an undergrad at Cal and she taught Bio 1A last semester, so, normally, I fangirled and went to office hours regularly and still do now that I'm in the second half of the Bio series.. I asked her what bio/chem classes undergrads in her lab complete before beginning to work in her lab and I mentioned I was interested, so by the end of this semester I'll have an answer because I'll be done with both sequences. She signed my notebook and we even took a selfie!!
The Batman HOLY CRAP that is amazing. I get to see her speak later this month and I'm also fan-girling super hard. She's a superstar
