    Thanks for the inspiration, Cosmo! I have an Outback - I got it because of it's ground clearance for driving snow in upstate NY. It's so cool to see someone towing a small travel trailer with an Outback in the Adirondacks!

    I'm attempting a bit of a towing journey with my subaru... In a few weeks I'm driving to oklahoma from the silicon valley towing a tow dolly to pick up a vintage car and tow it back using my 2003 subaru outback. The car I'm towing is a 1974 Saab Sonett III, which is a mostly fiberglass and weighs only !800lbs. I'm sure I'll be ok...but it is a 3200 mile trip.

      @@CosmoWeems HI Cosmo, thanks for this informative video. I'll be getting a HIgh Camp Trailer in a month or so and am shopping for a tow vehicle right now. I'm looking at the Outback so I really appreciate what you have to say here. I believe my trailer is similar in weight to yours. I'm being told I should look at a 6 cylinder over the 4 for more power. Do you have any thoughts on that? You're happy with your setup as is so I have to wonder. I live in Michigan and plan to do a lot of camping here but may venture west through the mountains and for that reason the 6 cyl has been recommended, I'm looking at pre owned, around 2018. Do you ever find that your Subi doesn't have enough power? Thanks for your thoughts on this. I've gotten so much useful info from your videos...I'm one of the women that will be doing lots of solo camping you've mentioned in previous videos. :) Can't wait to get going! Thanks!!

      Hi Marianne. I have a 4 cylinder and its doing fine I love the Michigan UP th-cam.com/video/Uf-VtDew2cA/w-d-xo.html High camp says the tongue weight of the trailer is 190 pounds so lets round it up to 200. Make sure the tow vehicle can handle that, and the weight of the trailer. The Outback can handle both. You are in for a good time and have MANY great places t camp in your area. Your UP video was adventurous and entertaining and I love the window in your trailer!! I'm retiring later this year so I can enjoy roaming around without time restraints. Hi Ben. I have 38,000 miles on the Subi. I change the oil every 10K and use high temp Mobil 1 oil and a Mobil 1 oil filter. I am planning on changing the trans fluid at 50K and any other fluids in the drive train. So far no issues at all. I keep an eye on the temp screen and the temp is usually between 200 and 245. So far it stays in that range. I check the fluids before every trip. I did make this minor change and I it seems to be helping but I need more trips to be sure. We love our Subaru EXCEPT we have had nothing but trouble with the moonroof. Dealer says the drains plug up. It's happened to us twice now. I wanted to use it for a tow vehicle but now I'm going to have to trade it in for some other vehicle which means I have to put off buying a trailer for a while. So I'm watching videos. Thanks for the info, I'll make a more informed decision next time and insist on NO SUNROOF. The bill was $3,000+ last time the moonroof leaked.

    Great video, is the Outback equipped with a controller for electric brakes? We have an Outback and these trailers are just over the max recommended for trailers without brakes. If you have a brake controller what model? Your advice/experience is appreciated

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend electric brakes on this trailer. The brakes assist and help maintain control in a panic stop. I used this controller amzn.to/3nJo2OH Amazon associate link. I may profit if you use it at no cost to you! There are many controllers to choose from. My controller senses the braking with a G-force sensor and apples adequate brake pressure based on the measurements of the stop. I am happy with it. The Outback has larger disk brakes for more stopping than the Forester or Cross trek so for me its a great choice and I would still get trailer brakes. Hope this helps!

    Lots of great information, if Sir Weems or anyone in the chat wants to reply to this please feel free. I am looking to go fully WFH/remote work this year, and I've targeted the Outback as my rig for a lot of reasons. I am still debating roof top tent/pop up camper system versus a small/micro teardrop/lightweight travel trailer or camper. Anyone have any thoughts for and against either? My goal would be to try and RV/boon dock, camp as much as possible and only pay for housing sparingly. So idk if the comfort of a tiny travel trailer is worth the big price tags versus just tenting living, or even doing a camping setup inside the car. This probably wouldn't be forever, but once i get on the road i want to go for the next 6 months to a year on the road and see how i like it.

      Have you considered just using one or two Calm Shelters?
      A smaller one for sleeping and a larger one for the office if you need that much space. They are much less expensive than a trailer and very portable. Combined with an Outback you have a lot of options. I am 5'9" and I can sleep in my outback.

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gerard. Sway bar is not needed. Tongue weight is 200 pounds and matches the car capacity. Trailer weighs in at 1500 loaded with water etc. I do have trailer brakes which I recommend. Trailer specs are good match for the car. Its very stable at any speed I have had it up to. Of course when you tow you have more forces to watch out for so sanity is the rule when driving. Trailer is tows well and Subi has no problems towing it. Once I drop the trailer I get spectacular gas mileage. 28 to 36 not towing 20 - 24 MPG towing Thank You for watching. Yes tongue weight includes the battery. The battery is in an aluminum box under the floor just in front of the trailer axle. it is accessed via a door under the mattress. which puts less tongue weight on the hitch. Hi Cosmo. I am planning for a future teardrop. I have a 2015 Outback and I have the factory/OEM hitch, which has a 1.25 inch receiver. I do find the smaller hitch receiver size mildly annoying because most hitch accessories are for 2 inch receivers. However, the OEM hitch is perfectly suited to the car's tow rating, and the OEM hitch kit connects to the vehicle (obviously) without any drilling or welding. My question for you is: do you have the stock OEM hitch kit, or did you have an aftermarket 2" hitch put on your Outback? Do you have any thoughts on this topic? My thought is that the OB's tow rating is 2,700 lb with a 200 lb max tongue weight, and the smaller hitch handles this fine and is less obtrusive, which must be why Subaru went that route. But I don't know if this presents any practical problems with a teardrop.

    Your trailer looks quite low when you're towing. Can you fit either a spacer on the suspension or larger tyres. If you went for cross-country tyres or even cross-climate tyres they will raise it that bit extra

    • @CosmoWeems
      @CosmoWeems  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It a perfect match. The trailer has 10 inches of ground clearance. The car has 8.75 If the car can get over it the trailer will too. Lift kits are available for the car - but Iinterested in that yet. No matter what your vehicle - some places only your boots or mountain bicycle will get you there. Thanks for your comment. The Subaru all wheel drive system is not for towing. I’m suprised 1000 pounds is ok but that’s why you would buy a teardrop. That’s not to say you can’t load up the car. He could put four propane bottles in the car and only worry about a moon launch

      Hi Lisa, I am using a Yakama. I think Thule and Yakama are about equal. Mine is mostly water tight. Nothing is water tight at 70MPH! I like mine. I am using the Outback cross bars and had used the Subaru cross bars on the Forester I used to drive. The box attaches easily but is a 2 person job. Mine is a small box so I could fit 2 bicycles on the roof with the box. My box holds 11 cubic feet of gear. The car holds 73 cubic feet of stuff in the cargo area, I was not impressed with the roof box at first but really appreciate it now. Regards =Cosmo

Fuel economy is better than competitors. Brakes are larger than the forester which is noticeable (I towed this trailer with a Forester for a few years). Decide what is best for you!
