  • Lantern shields are a fascinating historical shield and weapon. In their simplest form they were simply a shield that you could hang a lantern from to see at night whilst still having the defence of a shield. However some evolved into the more famous examples such as depicted in this video. Note that they were named for carrying lanterns, but that does not mean they were only used or carried at night. Here we see how it works as a offhand defensive and offensive arm in a daylight fight.
    The lantern shield in this video was custom made by us and is not commercially available.

    Yeah I didn’t click for the lantern shield. I clicked for the lavender fencing jacket.

    It seems like a fun weapon to work with.

    Fun exchange and re-enforces the idea that the warrior's skill is the true weapon.

    How does it work with a pole arm like a short halberd or a spear? If I remember correctly night time duels was only one proposed use for this with the other being for city watch, traditionally armed with a short halberd, patrolling the streets at night. It would give some more purpose to the articulated gauntlet.

    Does the spike in the shield help with anything?

      Yes, trapping/controlling opponent's blades. A lot of the time the opponent's blade can stop there, even for a moment, rather than drop past or under the shield. This reduces the chances of strikes coming up from underneath as follow up attacks and also gives a better chance of holding an opponents blade in place to give an opportunity for the user to make their own strike.

      It will be able stop blows that may otherwise glance off the shield and, say, hit the legs, or upper arm. Creating angles like that is a defensive strength. One bar can offer a lot of cover when intersecting other bars sweeping in arcs (cuts). Also, there's a few shields out there that have middle spikes, so it's not freakish for this shield to have one. But I would say it's mostly about creating those "trapping angles" rather than for striking with; though I guess you always could. The "serrations" on the museum shield "spike" are also pretty clearly for trapping blades.

    Question; what is the function of the rectangular section that comes off the back end of the shield, towards the elbow? It almost looks like some sort of scabbard, but that doesn't seem right.

      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Essentially it is a scabbard as on the original the blade retracts into that housing to be out of the way for day to day wear. The handle which the glove holds also folds out of the way so that you can actually use the hand more normally, especially now that the blade is out of the way. We kept the housing on our training version as the original one is metal and so it does offer some extra parrying and trapping ability.

    how would you compare the lantern shield to something like the caged buckler?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The caged style bucklers are merely a buckler with the ability to trap points, and if they aren't being used to trap points then they are nothing more than a regular buckler. But the lantern shield has the ability to cover a lot of lines with its long blade and snag attacks with it's shorter blade also. It also has much greater offensive capabilities.

    If that guy was going to attack you for real with a glave, your sword would have done little to stop it.

      Not really true, but there is an element of truth there. There is an increased risk of pole weapons beating through sword parries, but pole weapons can absolutely be parried if the correct body mechanics and timings are correctly used. This is not just us speaking from a modern perspective, but something that was well understood historically. The idea of heavier weapons easily knocking lighter ones aside or breaking them is in large part a fantasy in modern pop culture.

    I like a more clean version, no spikes, no indentation,no lantern,maybe a shorter blade? Would be more portable and streamlined.

      so a normal strapped shield with a dagger in the off hand?

    • @junichiroyamashita
      @junichiroyamashita 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@guyfawkes5012 a gauntlet-strapped shield with a shortsword more like, even though a skean or similar would be nice for it. A slender,pointed, single edged blade. The blunt side toward the hand,would be a more stern yet simple construction,with only disadvantage of no reverse cuts with it(not the most common of manuevers,and still, false edge sharpening still exists).
