Have you made any of these mtb mistakes?
All of them if I’m honest. Best was not tightening the stem bolts on the handlebars... they decided to come lose when I went to lift off a jump.
The pedal one

Yes I was once with a friend at his local trails about a 20 mile ride away from me. So I go down this trail blind and as we're going down he shouts back what's ahead. Well I heard him shout 2 or 3 then the one important one I miss. He shouts big rough hill bomb and by that time my momentum had already carried me half way down it. That day the bike fliped an uno reverse card as it took me for a ride! 😂 I did make it all the way down with both me and my bike in one peice though!
Never be afraid to learn from them,Einstein made thousands of mistakes before he found out 42 was not the answer to everything.
1:34 - riding off and not locking your vehicle
Locked cars got broken into more than unlocked cars.

Pro tip, whenever you tighten the pedals, going towards the handle bars tightens them. Then When you take them off it’s towards the rear of the bike
A beginner mistake that my friends and I did when we were starting was riding fire roads, designed for climbing, going downhill. We thought mountain biking was easy until we saw the actual trails 🤦♂️😂 also. Thinking back. We did no research before trying mtn biking lol
Blake is a gem, what a guy. Couldn't imagine the channel without him.
Blake was so funny screaming Neil while going down the trail alone. Made me laugh out loud.
its absolutely hilarious
From now until I die I will scream "NEIL!!!" at the top of my lungs when I go downhill
People have stripped their pedal threads?! I don't know whether to be horrified or impressed by the feat of strength and determination.
some have alu threads made of cheese
I've done it with my carbon cranks after putting on some chesters wrong
Same here and im waiting for new parts like 2 months now!😂😂
Dude that was literally just me tonight
I had a friend who stripped the crank but the pedal was fine, lol
Mistake #1: screwing in the pedals without greasing the threads.
this is highly underestimated. I had to unscrew my pedals after a season of hard riding and was so thankful for myself I did put a grease when screwing them in a year ago :)
Screw that. 🙅🏻♂️
This should have been in the video instead of the first one.
Putting them on the right side is easy as it is always written on the pedals.
Yeah, gotta get sum of that premium lithium grease on there.
I had to stomp on my allen key to unscrew it
Putting WD 40 on disc breaks lmao
This comment made me cringe never seen anyone do it but I can only imagine
I did it. I thought it would clean them. Then I read about it and used a combination of rags, a small blow torch and fine sand paper to get the oil off; and cycled round the area for an hour to sort them out. Eventually, I gave up and replaced the rotors and pads. Pricey mistake.
Bruh stfu thats what I always do cuz I'm broke
Thats just common sence not to
@@officialkpfpz7049 It's not about price man, you're not supposed to get certain things (expensive or not) on your brake pads in general or they won't work right anymore.
I really wish I could have someone to explain to me everything when I'm riding the trails.
Yesss pls
Same here, I would like to do more when im riding but I get scared just cuz there nobody with me.
I feel you
i wish som1 would ride with me and not just fucking talk...
I've always noticed pedals have an 'R' and an 'L' on them. High IQ stuff! I might get a mountain bike soon ... good tips!
4:02 that was hard to watch.
Looks like he was just too slow...
Never did something wrong because of these vids man
Blake and Neil = Best video
stripped my crank once when incorrectly installing a pedal. ends up mortgaging my house to buy a new bike from scratch
Why didn't you just buy a new crank?
Im not a beginner but I have definitely reversed my pedals and had to rethread cranks
Does your mom mark your shoes L & R
no
Tightening the pedals in wrong direction. I knew that left pedal and right pedal have opposite tightening direction thanks to your videos. But i needed someone to help and he was thinking that the pedals direction are the same. And he never listened to me. So yes, i have a overtightened pedal which will be never loosen back :D
"forgetting to shift"
*me whose been biking for 10 years and still forgets*
Regarding the pedal mistake: Some ppl might say that's ridiculous and hardly anyone ever actually makes that mistake(due to the giant R and L), BUT I've been skateboarding for 30+ years and just 4 months ago I put a truck on backwards.
I've seen other seasoned skaters do the same thing many MANY times.
I've forgotten to snug up a freshly built BMX before too.
My bars ended up against my top-tube after one hop. 😂 I said "OH YEAH!"
EDIT: Putting a truck on backwards is WAY more visible than putting the wrong pedal on.
Always get a good laugh when we get a Neil x Blake collab.
Unless the guide is oily Wilkins and he says to just roll it... then you are on your own...
😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
‘You said just f....ing roll it!!!’
Thanks, this is helpful. Brand new mountain biker and I literally cannot get enough of it
LOL!!! Thanks for the advice about the pedals, I did not know this!
4:03 I think this is gonna give me some nightmares. Out of the blue that crash. Damn
Love watching Blake and Neil ham it up!
2:42 Wooaaaahhh Captain Jack!
Not mentioned but important to remember. Left pedal is a left hand thread, so that the torque of pedal strokes will always tighten each respective thread.
GMBN at work love it
You guyz fun rock. Love all your videos...
not having advice about the trail is probably my biggest mistake, friend knows the trail and i just follow him blindly and tried to match is speed. It was a downhill and a fairly steep one, it was straight down no turns; you just need to choose the right path to avoid puncture as you will easily hit 60km/h. There was a bend to the right, under normal circumstances you can easily brake and take the bend at around 40km/h becasue it was wide, but it was pure gravel(big ones). I braked, no grip, and the tyre jsut bounced and skidded on the gravel, tried to bank/lean and turn, still no grip.
"Oh shit". I jsut decided to straigten up and brake to reduced my speed as much as possible before i hit the bushes.
*Big ass rock hidden behind a bush*: "Surprise Modafocka"
Suspension botommed out and i did a frontflip, fortunately landing on soft bushes. Never would i go that fast again without knowing the trail, i still got phobia on very fast downhill i do not know and my fingers automatically feather the brakes.
If you’re riding A-B and then back to your car/home and only carry one spare tube, that one tube is to get you back and not to carry on regardless. If you get another puncture, you may as well have not carried one at all. 👍
Haha that was literally the first thing I did on my mountain bike was put the pedals on the wrong side and stripped them out 😂
Love a full beginner video like this one, some i see class a beginner as basically an intermediate. Some like myself are just getting back on a bike for the first time in many many years, i was a teenager lol 😅have no idea what i am doing lol
1:50 if you struggle with that it might be that you got too short reach, which was the case for me so I am exited to get a new build soon, much longer reach, I hit my knees several times on the fork, and thee cockpit.
I love how Blake always acts as a newby
1:10 is that the rollercoaster in Finale Ligure? I miss that trail though
Ahaha have done the loose bars one, hit the first little feature on the trail and Woop bars flip upside down 😂
1:37 I did it when It's my first time in that road and the climb is like 20° like that and my gearings are 2x8
Once I was going to swap a stem for a shorter one, but decided not to after loosing two of the four bolts. Forgot about it and took bike out next day. After a mile the bars started to gradually get loose.
How about a video on ‘wardrobe mistakes’. I’m always confused about what to wear for what temperatures. When are pants/tights warranted vs shorts vs shorts with knee warmers.
I wish I could see what GMBN recommends for different temperature ranges. Ex: A split screen that shows a picture of Neil and how he dresses for sub 0, 0, 10, 20, 30 degree Celsius.
That sounds like an incredibly subjective, personal topic. Different people have different tolerances to temperatures.
Maybe a video showing the different bits of kit for different weather could work better?
The stem was my undoing my firs time out. Painful but unforgettable lesson.
If you screw the left pedal on the right crank or vice versa you can fix it by threading it on the inside this only works if you only screwed it in a little bit
what kind of person puts bolt in backwards and then actually cranks them down?
do you not know the "turn a bolt backwards until it lines up first before cranking it" trick?
@@greedfox7842 English do you speak it? Have you renamed tightening cranking? Cranking having nothing to do with the crank then? Thoroughly confused as a motorbike a rider.. 💚✌️
@@unicorntelecoms4387 I am using "cranking" to mean tightening with great force. Because if you put a bolt on incorrectly you would have to tighten it down with a lot of force to go against the threads.
@@greedfox7842 the great force is normally known as torque, normally in Nm or foot pounds etc. Mountain bike people dont use torque wrenches to know how tight?
@@unicorntelecoms4387 yeah, most of the time, but anyone dumb enough to put their pedals on backwards is not going to use a torque wrench.
I was wondering if I’m still making the same mistake
years on !!
These guys are amazing 😂
Blake is my MTB Spirit Animal
I never not have at least 1 finger on back and front wheel, 24/7 finger on brakes
"You clumsy ****" LOL
Really good, fun
On my new bike I noticed the chain was slightly touching the front derailiur, it was a pain adjusting it with the two screws and the lever adjuster but I took care of it and went off to a road trail. Noticed my front brakes were making noise all the time and rear were not. When I got home part of the caliper was always touching the disc, loosen the bolts adjusted until no noice was heard while spinning the wheel now is very quiet.
it seems that no one won the Canyon bike from the giveaway....!!!Blake has it !
Matiakis Dimitrios weee neeeeed aaaaaa wiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeer
I really find a place inside my head for these advice. I'm a noob!! xo lol
Not walking the trail upwards to check for any new jumps or logs in the way.
My local trail is being worked on quite often, so every time I go, it can be a little different.
I come here for the awesome awesome acting. No really. It makes learning fun.
Who here can do jumps and drop offs, but can’t bunny hop or manual
You was funny dear.i like😂👍🙏
Hi from Sweden!

The worst is seating a new tire only to realize that you have botched the rotational direction once the sealant is in. You have to very carefully dance around it and try to not spill anything. So annoying.
I actually intentionly death grip some times to build confidence in cornering speed and stop me being overly cautious.
I don't think it is a good thing to force yourself like that if you don't have enough confidence, you might crash and hurt yourself
I never like to let my index fingers off either brake, death gripping like that is dangerous I've seen people OTB because they forget they have brakes to stop them, learn to feather them(really useful for cheap brakes and even some shimano high ends) to corner better or just modulate better if you have real nice set of calipers.
@@felpel1027 it's hard to progress if you don't go out of your comfort zone. I know I will unnecessarily brake if I hover my fingers over the levers. Death griping let's me focus on cornering technique. I do it where I know I'm over braking.
@@timmyboy525 it's not dangerous if you do it intentionally. I will never forget I have brakes.. That would be like forgetting I have pedals.
Don't know why but Blake taking the wrong trail made me LOL.
This is me.lol we need more comedy like this in biking after all it’s supposed to be fun.

Been riding for years, I still sometimes stay too far forward, or forget to do a bolt check. doik
Is click shoes good for whipping or mountainbiking?
I work at a bike shop and I’ve seen people put pedals on the wrong side and they completely destroy the the cranks. On brand new bikes, when we tell them what they have done they think it should be fixed under warranty.
I’ve definitely made some of these
I took a spill like at the 4:00 mark and had a concussion 🤕. Is there more info about that clip?
Going off the beaten path…free riding/trailblazing and then busting out your spokes when brush gets tangled in your wheels.
The worst mistake I think I've made on my bike was trying to remove a pedal the wrong direction, the threads probably weren't greased either. I couldn't remember which direction to unscrew it and managed to shear off the metal of the crank surrounding the spindle of the pedal. The pedal spindle would turn inside the crank arm, wobble, but I was completely unable to remove it without using a saw.
Is hardtail and 120 travel with 70kg enough for trail like in this video ?
How high is 120 travel can endure the drop?
Thankfully I've never stripped my cranks lol
So, i come from motorbikes and... a few things i've noticed regular bikers do that is a big no no on motorbike is locking the back wheel and braking with one or two fingers. First one is obv... no traction = no control. Also you brake less efficiently. The brake thing is coz you can end up "bottoming out" the brake lever on your fingers that are still on the grip before you actually reach the maximum brake force.
I think the worst mistake I ever made was cleaning my disk break rotors, but it's not what you think. I had a cheap Walmart bike and the brake rotors were dirty, rusted, and squeaky. My child self thought that wd-40 would clean the rust and clean the rotors preventing it from squeeking. All it did was prevented me from slowing down😂
Ha, the second one happened to me. Straight from a bike shop rebuild! :-(
Yup.... Nice facts.
1:39 So broken leg 2019 update (only coz it's related to this). So i've been riding a week after breaking my right leg in 2018 and then 51 weeks later in 2019. I've had 2 surgeries, a stainless steel bar screwed onto my right femur, I'm never running again, Jumping when on foot is gonna be risky, I can only bend my knee to 110 degrees and as of the date of the video I can ride better than I can walk. The problem is the soft tissue in my right leg isn't very stretchy any more, so for me, not being in the correct gear all of the time could put me in the hospital and then a wheelchair. Fun times! :(
@Aditya Wardhana no it's more of a case of avoiding spinning my legs too fast and heavy load. If the freewheel engages while I'm pedaling (you know when you go from the bottom of the cassette to the top quickly and you lose drive coz the wheel is spinning very slightly faster than the hub internals) I have a 80% chance of snapping all the soft tissue in my knee, which is already mostly scar tissue, resulting in a completely unusable leg. So I always pre-shift and break to load up the hub when going up the cassette. Pedaling downhill isn't too bad because I'm a little crazy and I pedal most downhill sections I ride so the gearing in that situation is never more than a gear or two off, which isn't too much of an issue
You can get the crank arm re tapped and they put a spacer to allow you to put normal pedals in
The acting in this video deserves an Oscar :P
I’m a intermediate jump 40 or so ft and race dh and I still cross thread pedals
i'm bad a checking bolts.. and my nephew ate dirt with a loose front wheel.
Anyone know where these trails are?
My front wheel Axel lock is broken. I can't remove Axel for it. I did not found any videos about that contains on TH-cam .plz make it for us..
What helmets do you have?
All of my friends never make mistakes. They all ride perfect, jump perfect, know perfect, while I am SirCrashALot.
Blake is the funniest presenter by far
Im not a very new mtb rider but I came back to the sport about a year ago after getting off for a year I put in the pedals the way I did before it worked and then it was to lose it stripped the crank and now I have to get a new crank set so to those people who are cocky cause they’ve ridden before and are coming back to the sport and you want to replace a part just take it to a tech or he extremely careful please I had to pay 60 dollars for a new whole crank set
0:40 omg I once done this XD
#askgmbn which kombi was in the start?
Most of beginners make that mistake. I enjoy your video every time. Thanks GMBN^^
Probably missed it somewhere. But where is this, looks like some good trials ??
"Leaning back too far" -- I hate doing this mistake. I even took some videos of me going down hill to see how stupid I look. I don't touch the rear tyre but it just looks more rookish in my eyes than I want to. I am a rookie, but still .. :)
Spraying muc off silicone shine all over your brake discs
4:03 I'mma head out 😂
the bad acting makes it real... so fun!!!
broke my shifter lever... still want to ride... duck taped the derailier into first gear and we are going to send it...
Most common mistake that really does affect skill progression... not looking at your line many yards ahead and looking down at the next 2-10 feet ... that's a killer mistake... keep yer head up, only glance the immediate terrain if need be. .
"NEEEEILLLLLL, IDIOT!!" hahahaha that was hilarious
In the example ever Blake goes the wrong way I'm surprised you don't mention waiting at intersections.
In group riding on motorcycles (street or dirt) you are responsible for the person behind you making the right turn.
