    Regarding the newspapers.com resource. I don’t have a subscription but thankfully I do my research. A distant relative was listed as having survivors Max and Turner. I eventually found the obituary and Max and Turner were her DOGS! She had never married. I have never seen an obituary listing animals as survivors so your subscribers should be extra thorough with their research after finding these hints.

    ThruLines allow us to add a potential ancestor to our tree, but I still don't see a way to reject a proposed potential ancestor that I know is not an ancestor.
    In my case, my great-grandmother was a single mother, then married a man ten years later who was not my grandmother's father. A few other people's trees just assume that this man was my grandmother's father, so ThruLines suggests him as a possible great-grandfather for me, even though I know that he wasn't. (I don't know yet who was, but I know it wasn't him.) The Evaluate feature would let me add him (erroneously) to my tree, but it doesn't allow me to subtract him as a suggestion. It would be nice if ThruLines would allow me to dismiss the proposed potential ancestor with "No, this is not an ancestor," or even "I don't think this person is a potential ancestor," so that the same false lead doesn't keep popping up over and over again.

    When we add children to a person, it would be really good if we got to choose the other parent rather than the software automatically adding 'unknown spouse'. This always takes a fair bit to fix up and as it occurs every time we add a child, allocating the other parent at the time would be so useful and time saving (plus save lots of frustration....)

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you add a child to a person in your tree, at the bottom of that screen, just above the SAVE button, is the option to select the other parent.

    I really appreciate all you do by providing these video updates and more. Can you pass along another suggestion there--it would be so helpful if the All Hints page had sub-categories for each category. For instance, under Records, have sub-categories like Obituaries, Census's, Crew Lists, etc. Or also even allow us to be able to filter by cousin relationship or paternal/maternal side. Those would be HUGE timesavers. Thank you!

    • @AncestryUS
      @AncestryUS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shari, Thanks for the suggestions. I will pass along the suggestion for filter the All Hints list by record type. As for filtering it by relationship, that is the function that your family tree already does. Just go into your family tree and you will see the leaf hints on each person in your tree.

    • @scGenMOT
      @scGenMOT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AncestryUS Thank you for passing that along. I use the hints I've seen on each individual, but having an All Hints filter that fliters by maybe just maternal/paternal side would save even more time and be more efficient when members are in the All Hints section. If that's a possibility, that'd be great. If not, no worries. Thank you!

    Thank you Crista! I missed you too and am happy to see another video from you. One very frustrating aspect of ThruLines that remains is the inability to "reject" bad ancestor hints. I have worked with the non-private tree owners to correct their trees, but there are private trees that I cannot review which perpetuate the error causing the hint. Hi Crista, Glad you’re back doing videos! Looking forward to seeing you next week! I will look into some of the other conferences. If you are going to Rootstech, have you found it very beneficial to also go to the NGS or FGS conference(s)? I just found a great discovery for one of my great grandmothers on newspapers.com. I’m wondering if they are indexed by exact spelling or in a soundex type index? Some of my family spelled their name with different spellings for the last name.

    • @CristaCowan
      @CristaCowan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda, I find that RootsTech and NGS are very different conferences. RootsTech is large and innovative and exciting with lots of different things to learn and loads of beginner classes. NGS tends to be a little more academic and geared toward the intermediate to advanced researcher.
      As for Newspapers, because they are type-set, all of them are read by a computer. The quality of that OCR reading depends upon the quality of the image and the clarity of the type-set. The search functionality on the site is an "exact" search. So, try different spellings.

    A nice feature for Thrulines could be a filter that shows in your "cards" section those ancestors that are linked as direct ancestors of that person. It could also be a box that could be clicked that filters out the paternal line or maternal line of the Thruline card ancestor. "Show paternal ancestors" , for example of a particular 2nd great grand mother. Sometimes I see these names of Potential ancestors and wonder how they fit into the Thrulines hints. (without having to click on the all the "cards"). I have Portuguese ancestors so the surname are all over the place!

Or, you can use the LINK feature and send them a one-time use link to access your tree and add it to their account as a shared tree. If they have chosen to use their real name as their display name on Ancestry, you will need to use either their email address of the link feature. Since you should be in communication with them before sharing your tree anyway, this information should not be difficult to obtain.

      Hello Michele, Ancestry is a family history website and the basic construction of that is through family trees. If you are trying to post information about unrelated people, you can create a family tree of unrelated people and then connect them all to a cover image of the autograph book as well as the individual signed pages. This keeps them all linked together without showing familial relationships.

As your tree continues to grow, that list will continue to populate with new hints and can be (as you have discovered) overwhelming. Focusing instead on one person or one family group at a time is a much better strategy. What you will likely discover is that the hints are not duplicate hints but the same information in different record sets or from different sources.
      If you have a specific example of the exact same hint being delivered to you multiple times, feel free to give me the URL of person in your tree where you are seeing that and I will get someone to take a look at it.

      @@CristaCowan Hi Crista i came across this when i was doing some family research Daniel Lynch, merchant at Blanchard, is a son of John and Joanna Lynch, natives of Ireland. The father was born in 1830, and has been a sailor, until 1881, when he became a clerk in his son's store. The mother was born in 1831 and died April 13, 1873, in Kent Co., Mich. Their son Daniel was born April 18, 1852, in Newport, R.I., and the age of 16 years left home to learn the blacksmith's trade. Following this occupation as an apprentice five years, he then started in for himself at Grand Rapids, where he remained two years. HIs shop was consumed by fire. In 1875 he started in the grocery business in the same city, continuing in it two years. He then followed blacksmithing about six months, at the expiration of which time (1878) he came to Blanchard, this county. After three months at his trade, he returned to Grand Rapids. Coming once more to Blanchard, he bought a lot and erected a grocery, where he began in mercantile life again. During this time the village of Blanchard was incorporated. He held the offices of Constable, Trustee Marshal and Deputy Sheriff (under C. M. Brooks, Sheriff). In 1879 he exchanged his store for 80 acres of land in Rolland Township, and June 20, 1880, he again established a general mercantile business, resigning all other positions which demanded his time. He has, however, since held the office of village Treasurer two terms. He was married May 12, 1875, to Miss Elizabeth Condon, who was born June 17, 1852, in Kent Co., Mich., the daughter of John and Hannah Condon. Mr. C. died in 1873, in Walker Township, Kent County. The mother now lives in Grand Rapids. Mr. Mrs. Lynch are the parents of two children,- Elinor, born March 28, 1876; and Bessie, born Nov. 25, 1879. Mr. L. is politically independent. He and his wife are members of the Catholic Church.
      Daniel Lynch died on 26 Jul 1937 in Grand Rapids, and is buried in ST. ANDRE .Look's like john lynch was a sailor where do i look up to find out information on ancestry?

    • @CristaCowan
      @CristaCowan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenniferlynch4823 This looks like some great information. Where did you find it? Can you back it up with records? For example, can you find John and Joanna and their son, Daniel, in the 1860 census in Rhode Island? Can you trace them from there to Michigan in the census every ten years? Can you find a birth record for Daniel? His marriage record?
      If it was me doing this research, my plan would be to document every piece of information in this narrative and look for additional clues in those records that would help me build out the timeline.
      Depending on where they lived in Rhode Island, there might be additional information in local history records there about who John might have worked for and what kind of sailor he was.
