  • Come take a stroll around the NYS Woodsmen's Field Days 2023 in Boonville New York on today's episode. You'll see equipment you may never have even known existed. You'll also meet some people you recognize. As a first time visitor to the logging show, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor several times as I've never seen so much high-quality logging equipment all in one place before. After several hours of touring around the show I still find myself in awe at just how much there was in the way of sawing, splitting and general forestry-related equipment. Aside from all the equipment, the number of people I had a chance to talk to was awesome. Lots of great people out at the show. Glad you're all here for the tour!

    Thanks for showing us around. My brother was exhibiting wood boilers there; he's the dealer for central boiler. Good stuff they sell. I've had one 15 years now and it's a beast of a unit that he retrofitted into my two forced air furnace units. Nothing beats it on a windy, subzero day.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually was looking pretty hard at those Central Boiler's. I sure wouldn't mind one. I 've got an endless supply of wood to keep it going. Heat my home and shop with it.

    • @FamilyManMoving
      @FamilyManMoving ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sawingwithsandy I have one of the previous 'next gen' models that are gassifiers - they burn the waste smoke as fuel. Once they warm up and get a bed of coals, there is no smoke. Smoke is super-heated when pulled down through the coals, then injected with air. The result looks like a gas furnace blasting full bore (which is what it becomes). The lower burn chamber hits 1800+ degrees. My kids call it the dragon.
      It heats about 500 gallons of water to 185-195 degrees. It travels underground about 100' into my basement (losing maybe 1 degree) and makes a loop through my basement and attic (furnaces in both locations) and another floor loop under stone tile. It's awesome. But they need seasoned wood. Wet stuff will work, but it'll be work.
      My brother advises to NOT use a lot of electronic valve controllers or gadgets. The system he built me is mostly passive - two pumps and a design that passively manages temps for the floor tile without electronic things. Never failed in 15 years, other than normal pump maintenance.
      So if you go the boiler route (I'd say yes), find someone who has done hundreds of installs and will walk you through a mostly passive design. Then hire them for it, rather than DIY. Money well spent.
      Oh, the new central boiler models have optional remote monitoring. I thought it was a gimmick, but then my brother brings up his dealer monitoring system and shows me how he can get alerts from dozens boilers about failing parts, worn seals, bad wood or whatever. He calls people before the problem shows up, and has the warranty parts in hand before needed. It's a smart system (you can optionally turn it off). He can even give advice to owners who are having issues, by remotely monitoring burn cycles. We were fishing on vacation one day, and he called two customers and told them, "stop opening the door. You're not letting the machine do its work. It will ping you when it wants to be fed."
      Sorry for the long response. Just sharing what I know, to a guy who likes to share what he knows. Thanks.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've thought about doing away with my wood stove and going that route but my main concern is I don't have in floor heating or a basement to allow for easy movement of the water to heat my home

    • @FamilyManMoving
      @FamilyManMoving ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sawingwithsandy My primary heat was two gas furnaces and still are. There are hydronic radiators that fit into the plenum output side of the gas furnace which the water connects into. So all I need is the furnace fan - no gas - to heat the house. I actually wire the thermostat to fire nothing but fan (just pull the wire for the gas igniter).
      The flooring heat is nice because stone in winter is cold. It's not the primary heat, but it's nice having a floor at 85 degrees when it's a blizzard outside. Nice, but not strictly required. Carpet feels great, too.
      You don't need a basement. Just trench down about 24" and then route up throough your crawlspace, or along the outside and into the wall. It's all insulated.
      The route for us is: boiler, push pump ( 9 GPH), 100+' trench, basement furnace coil, basement gas water heater, 75' to attic, attic furance coil, 75' back to basement, 55 gallon water heater (not plugged in) that feeds the floor coils, back to boiler. Not a single electronic valve in there anywhere.
      The floor heat uses one additional pump for the floor coils (6 in total) and feeds from a 55 gallon water heater we bought just to hold the water. It is cooler than the main boiler line using a passive system my brother designed...it's not a DIY. But it drops the 180+ degree water to about 115, so you don't overheat the floor tiles.
      The floor loops can be turned off with no effect on the house heat. Some days - when it's not too cold - the addition of the floor heat can force you to pop open house windows. So we leave it off.
      I'll send you an email with his contact info. He's not hurting for sales, so this isn't me pimping his business. You are probably too far from him anyway. I just know he's the kind of guy who can answer your questions.

    Hey Sandy, how much did you spend... if only - "Fantasy money?" I saw you climb into the cab of that mini-ex. You get one of those and you'll have to change the name of your show to: "Trenching & Digging With Sandy!" I did a project the last couple of days... I built a set of drawers that fit in the cabinet under my metal lathe. Built it all out of scrap lumber. Half way thru the project, my table saw motor died (1hp, belt drive, 10" Craftsman). Damn, they just don't build stuff to last. I've only been using that saw for 50 years! thought about a new saw... until I checked the prices! A new motor is a lot cheaper!!
