Not only does it cover real Pacific Islander mythology, but it's based on the real-world thousand year period where anthropological evidence suggests they completely stopped traveling between islands. They were voyagers, stopped for a full millennium, then began voyaging again, and nobody knows why.
When this movie came out talked to a Polynesian friend of mine and he said they did right by the Culture. He said the only thing "wrong" was Maui. He was too Small. In their faith He was nearly 8 feet tall with oh so many MORE Muscles with a bigger Ego. So 5 Gold Stars to Disney.
Maui is different in every Polynesian culture. For us Māori, Maui was actually slim and not bulky. He was also very naughty, kinda similar to Loki of Norse mythology in a way. Even our children’s stories didn’t shy away from all the bad things he did. He had siblings and his hook was made from his grandmothers ( Murirangawhenua ) jaw bone, she gave/gifted it to him
@@1313__Shinobi and in mythology he actually diers because he tries to steal immortality for humanity from Hine-nui-te-pō by entering her vagina but is crushed by her obsidian vag teeth
The scene where the ocean parts & Te Kā comes racing across the seafloor towards Moana, only for her to see what she really is and help her break through the pain and rage is one of the most well-crafted and beautiful moments in animation, period. The same goes for the "I Am Moana" sequence.
For me it’s literally impossible to not cry multiple times at this movie, and I’m not even part Pacific Islander. Especially at the scenes of Moana’s grandma passing away and then singing with her to lift her back up.
that just prove that no matter what race, ethnicity , religion, gender we are all connected. We nee to find a way to work on that more our connection :)
Auli'i Cravalho was only 14 when she first got cast... All of Hawai'i is so proud of her... The voice of Moana's mother (Nicole Scherzinger) is also from Hawai'i, and although the Rock wasn't born in Hawai'i, his mom was, and he attended public schools in Hawai'i for four years...
and photos of The Rock's maternal grandfather in his Polynesian Chieftan wrestling costume were used as reference for Maui. Again, not Hawai'i but closer culturally/geographically
There’s a hilarious clip on TH-cam of Alan Tudyk recording his lines for Hey Hey the chicken and at the end he says while laughing “I went to Juilliard”🤣🤣
Dwayne Johnson was perfect as the voice of Maui, he captured his personality perfectly especially when he does his Battle Cry every time he's in the moment that calls for it
Also my best friend told me that for the animation of Moana's hair (and the other's curly hair) that they invited a bunch of curly haired people and asked them to essentially flip their hair for the animators lol
The part that gets me every time is when Moana is package things to leave and her mother catches her. Instead of trying to stop Moana, her mother just puts a few more things in the bundle and hands it to her.
Opetai Foa'i, who wrote much of the music for the film, sings Tokelauan in "We know the Way". Look up his long-established group, Te Vaka (the canoe). Wonderful stuff, and expect more of it in Moana 2.
Remember watching this with my entire family the day it came out. As Samoans this film meant so much to us, seeing how beautiful our cultures, customs and history were portrayed was something else. Both my Grandparents passed away in 2022 so this film will always hold a special place in me and my families hearts❤
That song and moment reminds me of a scene in a show that gives the same feeling except more understated. Student: (is looking at a bully he has defeated, taking back his power) He is so small. His name belongs to no one. Teacher: And who does your name belong to? The world? The future? Student: No. It belongs to me.
I am so grateful when this came out and showed true Pacific islander representation. My whole Samoan family was able to book a whole cinema and watch it together. Still one of my fave memories of all time. ❤
I remember seeing it twice in the cinema when the film was released... Because it was and is very moving, I was always moved by the culture, the animation, the history and songs. It is a beautiful film and yes, it always moved me to tears.
The language is Tahitian, which is part of the Polynesian group of languages. Polynesian languages belong to the larger Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family. Malayo-Polynesian languages include those spoken in Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, most of Indonesia, parts of Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as Madagascar’s native language. The Austronesian homeland is believed to be Taiwan, where the non-Malayo-Polynesian branches of the language family are still found today. This means that while Malayo-Polynesian languages spread far across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the other Austronesian branches stayed localized to Taiwan. Edit: I some how forgot to mention Samoan, Tokelauan, and Tuvaluan
The song in which he queried the language being "barely used or Aramaic" was We Know the Way which has a bit of Samoan, Tokelauan and English. Tokelauan is a living language, it's just that there are relatively few residents of that nation compared to world standards.
@I was just letting them know about the languages. I didn’t even comment when he asked. I waited until near the end of the movie to say anything. I don’t make comments midway through reactions.
The end and the beginning where she's a baby always makes me cry. I promise you Moana saved Squirt and reunited Squirt with Crush from Finding Nemo!!! I'm excited to see Moana 2! 😭😭💗💗💗
Even though he only appears for one scene, Tamatoa is still one of my favorite modern Disney villains, and "Shiny" is one of the single greatest vilain songs ever. Ron and Jon were like, "we may not have a traditional villain in this movie, but we're making a traditional villain song anyway." Jermaine Clements' vocals are so good.
Facts! He was perfectly cast & nobody could have pulled off Shiny like him. My nephew was about 4 when this came out and it was played daily so I learned the words and would sing along.
Fun theory: Only demons and gods and the dead can go into the realm of monsters. If Moana isn't a god or a demon, then she was dead. When she completed the journey, Tafiti brought her back. Went to Hawaii last year, and one of the locals told me.

*I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. I love how they cast Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls) as Moana's mother.*
This is a modern classic and you guys really connected with it. Achara must have been touched on a deeper level maybe with something in her own life (grandparents?)
The Amount of Easter eggs are here so funny to me. My niece always loves to catch them. The sloth from Zootopia, the snowman monster from Frozen the Snowman, Olaf, Sven the reindeer Wreck-It Ralph the genie lamp are all in this movie

Another interesting fact about Moana...the soundtrack somg for the part where Moana was a baby and collecting shells....The song was a tribute for students who died in a fire at a boarding school in Tuvalu at the year 2000
The Kakamora are from Polynesian mythology, where they are small, hairy spirits with sharp claws known to be secretive and dangerous. In reality there were short-statured people of the Solomon Islands who are believed to have inspired the myths ... which rather suggests that the Polynesian people in general did not think highly of those specific people. So the way they are depicted in this movie fits reasonably with the lore.
I love message in this story about discovering who you are but also being able to appreciate your culture and still being able to bridge the connection without denying your needs and denouncing your culture.
It's taken me YEARS to watch this movie again. My Granmama crossed the veil in 2020 and we were pretty much each other's shadow. Love the whole movie, but the Granmama passing and her spirit appearing on the boat gut me everytime. Achara's tears at 17:27 was pretty much me watching with yall 🤣😭💜

In the original draft the pig Poa came with her instead of HeiHei the chicken. But the focus groups did not like the pig but LOVED the chicken so they decided to have HeiHei be the "animal sidekick".

- Nala and Simba are not married until he became king. So she`s queen. - Mulan has Mushu, her horse, and the cricket. - Belle`s sidekicks are the household stuff, the chandelier, the clock, teapott etc - the thing about Tarzan is bullshit, since he`s based off a book (which I read), and in this it`s clearly explained who he is. His actual name is Lord Greystoke, from England. (also, why dafuq should a king and queen sail all the way from norway down to the congo, build a treehouse (by themselves ... sure), live there a while and get another baby there, go back on a ship and die. ftw xD) - Pocahontas has Meeko + Flip (the colibri) - Anna + Elsa`s sidekick is mainly Olaf - Aurora: who is ash? I think her sidekicks are the fairies, + maybe the forest animals (owl etc)
I have the Funko Pop of Heihei and Pua together…I think Heihei is funny cute and the pig is adorable! I hope Pua gets to join the adventure in the next film.
