This song sounds like home every time I hear it. As a child my dad and I watched the movies together. I’m looking at the box sets for them now, red green and blue. That feeling of the Shire is how my childhood home feels. Looking to every hall, nook, and cranny is a memory. But it also reminds me of when the Hobbits return from their adventures. It’s not quite so easy to settle back into the quiet life after being out there. The hobbits get strange looks as they pass through, they’re dressed in armor and garb of man and elf. Each face they pass they grow a little more somber. Because everything they see used to be the center of their worlds, and to the friends and family they left behind it still is, but they know how big the rest of the world is now, they know the petty family gossip that drives hobbiton isn’t as important as they thought. I left my childhood home and my childhood town, a sleepy small town similar to the Shire in many ways. I left in search of purpose. I found my adventure. I met many storied and interesting people and had my worldviews shattered. When I returned, I carried myself differently, I spoke differently, I saw the world differently. I was given the same strange looks and same somber feeling of no longer being like the people that helped raise me. Nonetheless, this music always warms my heart. It reminds of the hugs my dad would give me when I was young.
I can imagine an Irishman from remote Ireland somewhere in a village who left and then returned after seeing the world would have such similar experiences, too. I am not Irish but I know it can be such a remote and isolated place in the countryside
This is the best composition and version of concerning Hobbits on TH-cam. The four of these ladies do an excellent job of playing the song while also including what I would call "Celtic vibes," that aren't necessarily in the version created for the films. I listen to this quite often.
