  • @rodneymills6477

    On the tenser "don't you dare" I think it was intentional. It was a blue note. I think it was supposed to sound like it hurt and it was a semi-tone flat because blue notes are supposed to be flat/flatted. It's a jazz technique adopted by many soul/pop/r&b singers.
    It's not even that the range of this is unspeakably high. But the damn tessitura. I've always been super jealous of Von's upper register.

    • @susandrakenviller3683
      @susandrakenviller3683 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it was intentional because this tenseness is present across his whole range. He is young so he can get away with it but I don't see his voice developing further if he doesn't learn how to sing more freely. His voice is very light and therefore the difference between his full voice and head voice isn't that big and he can sort of go on seamlessly from chest into his head voice but his voice is getting more shrill and colorless and he should lose that.

    • @bostonteapartycrasher
      @bostonteapartycrasher 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree. His voice sounded a lot better around his American Idol days. He sings everything with his mouth really wide now, and it makes his sound inhuman and unrelatable. I listen to this and think, "oh, wow. Look how high he can sing," instead of thinking how beautiful his performance was. Oh, and I've always thought he had a fairly heavy voice but just chooses to sing light to be able to sing in the range he does."

    I would really love to hear you react to Spensha Baker from The Voice this past year. She made it all the way to the end, and she has a wonderful personality, but I felt she was consistently straining her voice when she sang. To me she seemed to lack control and was often off pitch. I would love to know what a professional voice coach thinks of her singing technique. If I had to suggest a performance, I'd say "Broken Halos" is the shakiest and "Old Soul" (her finale performance) showcases her range the most. Either performance would be fascinating to watch you give feedback!

    On dropping the R - I also find it makes moving on with the next opening easier; having my jaw down and tongue flat on the final part of the word by losing the R automatically places me in an open spot, making it easier and more natural to come in at head voice/next note/next word/etc. next.
