This is why one of the things I liked doing while I was in college was searching for nice, clean restrooms that people barely go into with generally one stall/toilet. The nicest poo times were had in those days.
Yeah I'm on board with Geega about that. I hate the idea of some Rugrat crawling into my stall as I'm trying to do my business. I think I've only experienced something like that once. But the kid was trying to talk to me from behind the door and he tried to peek under the door. Luckily his dad was on him about that and told him to leave me alone.
When I was a grad student many moons ago, I was hired as a research assistant by one of my profs to help with one of her papers... and the biggest perk wasn't the possibility of getting my name attached to a research paper - it was getting an employee badge that granted me access to the Holy Grail of bathrooms on the faculty floor so I could shit in peace. I swear each bathroom was half the size of my apartment - a whole sports team could changed in there. That badge actually worked for three months after my contract ended and I was so sad when I lost my access LOL
Another reason I remember from somewhere for the awful bathroom stall design was to make it so that employees would not spend extra time there. Any time away from your desk is less productivity, so even the bathrooms must be as uncomfortable as possible to get them back to work faster.
The gaps so you can get out if you get locked in and so outside people, like EMS, can get to someone having a medical emergency. Imagine someone being right behind the door and your beating their body, neck, head into the wall trying to kick the door in.
