You could keep the same chords and sing a new melody - with your new lyrics - and then it would be your song. You'd be safe. Lots of songs use the same chord sequences.) Still, how much is the owner of that "intellectual property" (not just the composer, but their publisher, or whoever else owns the rights) going to care - if they even know? If you're just playing it for your own pleasure in private - even if you play it in small clubs or bars - IMO you're safe. (Most venues worth anything pay for a music licence so you don't have to.) The issue comes if you put it online, on youtube e.g. - especially (of course) if you monetize it, or attempt to. You are then (potentially) earning money through the work of someone else, which is theft. TH-cam has algorithms which identify most copyright music, and you get warnings if that happens (before it gets uploaded). But all you need to do - in any case - is change the music in some way, so it is no longer recognizable as the original tune. That's the issue: recognizability. If nobody (including youtube's bots or anyone who knows the original) recognizes where "your" song came from, how can anyone claim it's stolen? That's why - as a creative person - you should want to change the music in some way, just as you did the lyrics. Make it completely your own. The exception is if you are somehow parodying the original for comic purposes - so you need people to recognize the original music, or the joke doesn't work. (In fact, parodies often just adapt the lyrics in some way, with puns and so on, to make them funnier. If you've completely changed the lyrics, including all the rhymes and so on - and yours are not supposed to be funny! - you've moved beyond that.)
