    Ben, I hope things are going (as) well (as can be expected) with your father. Thanks for your (near Herculean) efforts to keep OA going with all the stuff going on in your life. Your efforts are not in vain and have not gone unnoticed. Sending love and a lot of positive vibes in your direction. Thank you again for keeping the OA flag flying.

    Only on Ben's Junk would you see him going through a jazz mag.

    Don't sweat it Ben, do what you gotta do, as I know how taking care of family is, as right now I'm between work, & taking care of my mother, so your days become both long, & short at the same time. 🙏 All goes well for you, & yours.

    I don't know, but I've been noticing kind of a mini Renaissance in regards to classic magazines and channels focusing on things that interest me doing a tabletop flip through review type of thing and I love it! I never thought we'd be looking at magazines like they were time capsules but considering it's a quasi dead or even a zombie medium, it feels appropriate. Cool video, Ben!

    You jogged my memory. I'd sometimes read my brothers copy of Downbeat back in the 70s. I'd skim it looking for the artists I'd heard of.

    Steiner-Parker synths were possibly most notable for their filter design, which varied significantly from the Moog ladder filter and its many imitators, and have a rather distinct sound. An interesting bit of trivia is that when Arturia introduced the first modern (post OSCar) analog monosynth, the Minibrute, they incorporated the Steiner-Parker filter design into it.

    It was the TEAC 4-track cassette decks that caught my attention. I believe one of your patrons, Matt from Techmoan, did a video covering 4-track tapes and how they got usurped by the more notorious 8-track format.

      Two very different things. Mat talked about the consumer format, the ad I showed is for full-sized multi-track recording rigs.

    5:35 yes, garage bands like Slugbug and Pink Floyd really love their Farfisa cheap organs.

    You have glossed over some things in the video like Wole Tayne. It looks to be a piece from a saxophone? On top is a Tri-Tone Samba Wistle. It's a Latin percussion instrument. I had Googled the name, and it is used in dance music. It has this shrill sound. Always fun looking at old magazines.

    Platinum Record Company getting hold of the Chess/Checker/Cadet(and probably also the Janus label) might well have forestalled those labels falling into the *greedy paws* of MCA(before they rebranded themselves as Universal Music Group) for a few years but MCA/Universal would've finally gobbled up that label group anyway.

    2:57 Steely Dan: The smell of a dentist's office in musical form. (Shamelessly stolen from a RiffTrax deep cut.)

      Huh? I wish I heard music as good and as sonically interesting as Steely Dan when I went to the dentist...

      @dancoroian1 I'd happily take the Dan when I'm at the dentist. Mine usually plays Millennial and Zoomer Pop.

      It's a Naked Lunch reference. Steely Dan was one of the first classic rock groups I ever got into--would've been seventh grade or so.

    It's like you actively want to repel people from your videos with that incredibly long, annoying tone in the intro...

    • @TiggiTheWillful
      @TiggiTheWillful 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Ahhh I see you are new here and an incredibly rude person. He’s had that tone in his videos from the start of the channels existence, It isn’t going anywhere - but maybe you should?

    • @dancoroian1
      @dancoroian1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @TiggiTheWillful no, not new, just consistently annoyed by something which is -- objectively, inarguably -- annoying...considering that I enjoy his content, and want him to see a wider audience, I thought this constructive criticism might help. And while I fail to see how my OC was rude in any way, your retort certainly was! 😘

    • @OddityArchive
      @OddityArchive  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @dancoroian1 Honestly, you are the first I've ever heard from that objects to the length of the .1, .5, etc. episode intros. I didn't think 10-ish seconds of the test tone (with the level at about -25dB) was excessive. I don't know if you use the "stable volume" feature or not, but I would strongly discourage it for my stuff--I could see where that setting would pump the intro volume.
      For what it's worth, on these videos, you can always jump to the 0:21 mark to get started. The more intricate Ben's Junk videos usually have a pinned comment with quick links to each segment/discussion as well.

    • @dancoroian1
      @dancoroian1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @OddityArchive I appreciate your good faith reply! And that's a good call on your part -- I do indeed have the stable volume feature enabled, that's probably why I found it so jarring...thank you for taking the time to reply in earnest rather than simply getting defensive. It means a lot! (and seems to be getting rarer and rarer these days)
